LeEco Le 2 (X620) Review

24 Юли 2016, 09:16:08

LeEco Le 2 (X620) ReviewLeEco (formerly LeTV) is one of the largest media companies in China. It has been established in 2004 and its business spans from internet TV, video production and distribution, smart TVs, and smartphones to eco-agriculture and internet-linked electric cars. Earlier this year, the company has changed its brand from LeTV to LeEco, which reflects the company's goal to build a Le Ecosystem. This ecosystem includes content, applications and devices, which run them. LeEco Le 2 (X620), a.k.a. Superphone, is an integral part of Le Ecosystem. Announced together with Le 2 Pro and Le Max2 a month and a half ago, the model features high-end design and specifications, which correspond to LeEco's goal to establish itself as a creator of premium devices. In addition, its proprietary EUI is closely integrated with the content produced and apps created by LeEco. The first batch of four LeEco devices turned out to be quite successful. Whether this will happen to the second iteration of Le smartphones is only about to be seen. Meanwhile, let's see what the guys from LeEco have prepared for us in the Le 2 (X620).

Specifications

LeEco Le 2 is built around a 5.5-inch in-cell IPS display with a 1080p resolution. Its panel covers 80% of the NTSC color space and has a typical brightness of 500 nits. It graces a metal body with a finely crafted metal frame that has ultra-slim bezels and chamfered edges. Under the hood ticks a MediaTek Helio X20 MT6797 chipset. After the X25, this is the top-notch MediaTek chipset for high-end mobile devices. It has a tri-cluster architecture, which includes 2x 2.3GHz Cortex-A72 cores, 4x 2.0GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and 4x 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores. Graphics are handled by a quad-core Mali-T880 MP4 GPU clocked at 700MHz. The chipset is backed by 3GB of double-channel, 933MHz LPDDR3 RAM, while the built-in memory measures 32GB. It is eMMC 5.1 type and cannot be expanded. The smartphone has a dual, nano-SIM card tray with both slots supporting 2G, 3G and 4G Cat. 6 networks plus VoLTE. The rest of its connectivity capabilities include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, and Wi-Fi Display, Bluetooth 4.2, a USB Type-C port with OTG support, GPS/A-GPS, Glonass, BeiDou, etc. LeEco is also designed to be a media powerhouse. For that purpose is features a high-end 16-megapixel primary camera with PureCel-S OV16880 1/3" sensor, 5-element lens, an f/2.0 aperture, dual-tone LED flash and phase detection AF. Besides all, it is also capable of shooting slo-mo and 4K video. The front-facing unit packs an 8-megapixel OV8865 OmniBSI-2 1/3.2-inch sensor with a 1.4Ојm pixel along with a 76.5-degree wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture. In addition, the model arrives with LeEco's proprietary Continual Digital Lossless Audio (CDLA) technology and Dolby Atmos on board. Both are designed to provide great audio quality. The company has even omitted to place a 3.5 mm jack as listening to music via the USB Type-C port provides better audio quality. It has even developed CDLA head/earphones compatible with the Le 2 "Superphone", which true audiophiles can buy separately. Power is supplied by a 3000 mAh, non-removable battery with a fast charger. LeEco Le 2 runs the in-house developed EUI v. 5.6.014 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. LeEco has announced that in June, 2016 it will launch EUI 5.8 and Le 2 is bound to be updated very soon. A complete list of the LeEco Le 2 specifications can be found here.

What's in the box

LeEco Le 2 is packed in a pristine white box with the company's logo on top. Inside it is accompanied by two booklets, a pin for the SIM tray with LeEco's logo on it, a micro-USB to USB Type-C cable, a 3.5 mm jack to USB Type-C adapter, and a fast charger. The charger is a US standard one. This means that it has two pins only for plugging it in the electric socket, so you will need an adapter, if your local electric system uses different socket standards. The 3.5 mm jack adapter is included in the package and you will need it, in case you don't want to part with your old head/earphones as the model does not have a 3.5 mm jack.

Design and build

LeEco Le 2 is a finely crafted smartphone, in which attention to detail has been closely observed. The first thing that strikes you is its perfect symmetry and elegance. The second is how light and shadow (glossy and matte) are combined to achieve a feeling of visually pleasing balance. The back, frame and physical buttons are mate, while the chamfered edges of the frame, the fingerprint sensor, LeEco's logo and the furrow, in which the physical buttons are placed, are glossy. Most of the body is metal, including the finely crafted frame and back plate. The only plastic is in the area at the top and bottom area of the back, where usually the antenna are placed. The metal frame forms extremely thin bezels around the screen, but the "black borders" are there. The protective glass perfectly blends with the frame. At the same time the back is slightly curved towards the frame to provide a better grip and fit in the hand. The corners make a fine C curve, corresponding to the corner curves of the camera and fingerprint modules on the back. The physical buttons are very responsive and made of metal too. They are placed in a small furrow and protrude only slightly. The overall feeling and look is of a premium smartphone. With a waistline of 7.5 mm it is very thin, but the chamfered frame edges make it look even slimmer. It is also reasonably compact for a device with a 5.5-inch screen, with a width and height measuring 74.2 and 151.1 mm, respectively, which are quite less than the average for the size class. The device is also pleasantly light with a weight of 153 grams. The build is excellent in every way. Even the smallest detail is designed and crafted meticulously. More importantly, most of the design features also have a functionality to them, so the utmost goal of form and function is definitely achieved by LeEco. Le 2 is available in two colors - rose gold and silver with a white front. We are reviewing a rose gold unit.

Controls

LeEco Le 2 has a classic controls layout with one major difference - it lacks a 3.5 mm jack. The reason for this is thoroughly explained in the Audio section of this review. On the top frame of the device, instead of the usual 3.5 m jack, is placed an IR blaster, which turns the device into a handy universal remote control for various household electronics - TVs, air conditioners, set-top boxes, amplifiers, projectors, etc. From a dedicated section in the Settings menu you can adjust the device to function properly as a remote control by choosing the type of appliance you will use it for and specifying the manufacturer and model. At the bottom frame, centrally placed, is the USB Type-C port with a speaker grill to the left and right of it. On the left frame the dual-SIM card tray is positioned, while on the right is a single volume button for up and down, and below it is the power button. On the front, above the display, from the left to the right are positioned a LED notification light, which can be managed from the Pulse notification light under Settings > Display, the light/proximity sensor, earpiece, and the front-facing camera. At a first glance, below the display there are no buttons. However, if you touch the area, they will appear. These are backlit, capacitive buttons for menu, home and back (from left to right). You can manage their behaviour directly from Settings > Accessibility. For each button you can choose from one and the same list of functions. Again from Accessibility, if you choose Left hand mode, this switches the place of the menu and back button. On the back of the smartphone, centrally at the top end is placed the camera with a dual-tone LED flash to its right. Above the camera, on the plastic horizontal lining there is a very tiny hole, which is most probably a noise-cancellation mic. Below the camera is the fingerprint sensor. The LeEco logo is towards the bottom end of the back.

Display

The beautifully designed body of LeEco Le 2 is graced by a 5.5-inch in-cell IPS display with an FHD resolution (1080 x 1920) and full lamination. As already elaborated in our Doogee Y300 review, the in-cell display technology combines the touch layer and the LCD layer into one, which results in a lighter, thinner, brighter and more transparent screen. The screen is super-fast and responsive. Text input and all other interactions with the screen are silk-like. There are several controls from the Display portion of the Settings menu, which allow you to adjust the display to your own liking. First, you can change the appearance of colors from the default (LeTV) to Vivid, Natural or Soft. The latter is suitable for prolonged phone use. Second, you have a Scale View option, which magnifies the text and icons, so you can see them better. There is also a blue light filter option. If switched on, you can adjust the temperature of the display. Thus, your eyes will not be strained from the screen's blue light (typical for all displays), if you plan to read for hours or at night. From the accessibility mode, you can switch on captions for videos you'd be watching and activate magnification gestures. According to the specifications, the display of LeEco Le 2 covers 80% of the NTSC color gamut and has a typical brightness of 500 cd/sq.m. Our measurements show that it has a normal color distribution with typical minor deviations. The horizontal and vertical angles are generally good, but actually the screen does look darker compared to the ones of other devices. The color temperature varies from 8431 to 9034 K at the different brightness levels, which means the colors are slightly colder than average. The static contrast ratio is very good and varies only slightly - from 1173:1 to 1261:1 depending on the brightness level. It drops significantly at 0% brightness - 189:1. At 100% and 75% brightness the display preserves very good white luminance values of 438.80 cd/m2 and 337.85 cd/m2, respectively.
Brightness White luminance Black luminance Contrast Color temperature
100 % 438.803 cd/m2 0.374 cd/m2 1173 : 1 8459 K
75 % 337.852 cd/m2 0.268 cd/m2 1261 : 1 8432 K
50 % 184.231 cd/m2 0.156 cd/m2 1181 : 1 8431 K

OS, UI and software

When we received the LeEco L2 , it was running a webshop ROM, but we decided to flash it and install the official company's proprietary EUI. The latest version is 5.6.014S(Stable) from May this year and is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. LeEco has already announced that this month (June), it will launch EUI 5.8. This customized user interface is one of the most user-friendly ones we have seen and actually enhances the benefits Android 6.0 brings with it. The UI is well-thought out and intuitive. It can easily turn the device into a useful assistant for your daily tasks, a communication and entertainment center. Compared to the classic Android M, there are several differences, which will be discussed below. For starters, when you unlock the device you see the main row of docked apps at the bottom - dialer, contacts, browser and camera. However, instead of an app tray icon there sits the LeLive icon. It opens up an application, with which you can watch up to 9 channels simultaneously. With the pre-installed LeEco Membership app, which also allows access to premium content, it is part of LeEco's Supertainment package for mobile devices and an integral part of the Le Ecosystem. LeLIVE is also accessible if you swipe the home screen to the right. Swiping the home screen to the left opens up a second screen with apps. Unlike in a typical Marshmallow device, there is no app drawer and all apps are directly installed and appear on successive to the home one screens. You can choose from three offline themes and many more, which are available online.
If you long press the empty space between the docked apps and those installed above them, you will see the Widgets, Themes, Wallpapers and Sort Icons options. The latter allows you to sort the icons on the screen automatically or manually. A long press on the empty space between the app icons provides an opportunity of changing the icon's place on the screen or removing it entirely. Sliding downwards from the top of the display brings up the Notifications menu, which has a shortcut to the Notifications management options and a Clear options. If you're wondering how to bring up the Task Manager, here it is - a short tap of the square capacitive button (Menu) will open it. However, it contains not only shortcuts to all currently open apps, but also music controls, brightness controls and Quick Settings menu along with shortcuts to several apps, which are otherwise inaccessible like the barcode reader, for example. There is a shortcut to the Control Center, which allows you to arrange the shortcuts in the Quick Settings to your own preference. A long press on the home button opens LeEco's PanoSearch. From Settings > Accessibility you can change the functions of the Menu, Home and Back button when long pressed as well as switch the Menu and Back button functions by activating the Left Hand Mode. The Volume options are classic and include adjustment of the ringtone, media and alarm volume.
The Settings menu is very concise. It does include lots of classic Marshmallow features, but others are omitted or changed. For example, it starts with the Wireless & networks set of options. However, the Airplane mode and Personal hotspot are brought up a level up and are directly accessed, not hidden in the More... folder. Turbo download is omitted. The Device set of options is named Common, it includes classic menus as the Display and Sounds ones, but again, options like Wallpaper and theme, Notification management, DND mode are brought up a level up and are directly accessed. This section also contains the Control Center we mentioned above and the Dual App functionality. The latter allows you to login with two different IDs in two versions of one and the same application. Besides classic options like Brightness, Font size, and Sleep, the Display options include several services, which allow you to adjust the screen in terms of color saturation and decrease the level of emitted blue light, so it is more comfortable for reading. You can also magnify the text with the Switch scale mode and manage the behaviour of the Pulse notification light. From the Sounds and vibration you can switch on the Dolby Atmos audio option and if you possess CDLA headphones, you have to switch on that option too.
Under Personal you can manage your LeEco and all other accounts on the device, the Location and App Permissions. What you see as a third option in Chinese in this section is actually the Fingerprint and Password manager. Usually this section is under Security, but as with many other useful features, this one has been brought a level up for quicker and easier access. Moreover, it actually contains Other security options and a separate Security section is omitted. The fourth and last section of the Settings menu is called Other and usually it is referred to as System. It starts with a System Update option and the second one, again in Chinese, is the Language & input management. This section also includes the typical Date & time, Power on & off settings, Application management, Battery management, Storage, Factory data reset, Accessibility, Printing service, and About phone. The Accessibility service includes several handy tools, including switching video captions on and off, switching magnifications gestures on and off, adjusting the behaviour of the Menu, Home and Back capacitive buttons, etc.
As mentioned earlier, EUI 5.6 does not have an app drawer. All apps are installed and accessed directly from successive screens to the home one. LeEco Le 2 arrives without Google Play Services installed, but has all the classic apps like Dial Pad, Contacts, Messenger, Camera, Clock, Calendar, default Browser, Gallery, File Manager. There are also several pre-installed apps, all dedicated to Chinese content and are a part of Le Ecosystem, including Le Sports, Le Store, Game Center, Le Mall, LeMe, My LeEco. The Music app is also integrated with LeEco's online services, but of course works with audio files stored in the device. Other apps that you will see pre-installed are Weather, Wallpaper, Remote Control, Super manager, Feedback, Notes, WPS Office, the Chinese social network Weibo, Map, and several System Tools - Calculator, Compass, Contacts, Downloads, Email, Video Player, Voice recorder and SIM toolkit. The most interesting and probably most useful one is the WPS Office, which works with MS Office and Adobe PDF documents. The Super manager is something that will be often seen as a Marshmallow option. It includes not only more sophisticated Battery management options, but also Clean junk, Data usage control, and Access management options for optimizing the performance of the device.

Networks, calls and connectivity

LeEco Le 2 has a dual-SIM tray for two nano-SIM cards. It is not hybrid, that is you can't place a microSD for additional storage. The design of the slot is very innovative and user-friendly because it allows you to place the SIM card(s) either way. This is what LeEco calls "blind design". Both slots support 2G, 3G and 4G Cat. 6 networks plus VoLTE. More specifically, the bands are - GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), CDMA (800, 1900 MHz), W-CDMA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz), TD-SCDMA (1880-1920, 2010-2025 MHz), FDD-LTE (1800, 2100, 2600 MHz), and TDD-LTE (1900, 2300, 2500, 2600 MHz). Our unit behaved as expected - with excellent reception and call quality. It did not have any problems connecting to Wi-Fi networks even from areas with low reception. The device supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, and Wi-Fi Display. The latter means that if your monitor or TV has a suitable Wi-Fi adapter, you can cast content from the smartphone to the monitor/TV. The handset also has an IR blaster, which turns it into a universal remote control for your TV, air conditioner, or other remotely operated appliances at home. In addition, the model supports Bluetooth 4.2 and has a USB Type-C port, which supports OTG. Both are tested and work fine. Finally, it also excelled in terms of detecting navigation satellites with accuracy of up to one meter. As seen from the screenshots, it does support GPS/A-GPS, Glonass, and BeiDou.

Performance

Equipped with a MediaTek Helio X20 MT6797, LeEco Le 2 scores high in benchmark tests as expected. With an AnTuTu score of 92374, the device yields only to smartphones equipped with MediaTek Helio X25 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipsets. It actually has an AnTuTu result very close to the one of the Zopo Speed 8, which is 92644, and in all other tests it scores a little less than it. The Helio X20 has a deca-core CPU with the cores allotted in three clusters: 2x 2.3GHz Cortex-A72 cores, 4x 2.0GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and 4x 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores. They are coupled with a powerful quad-core Mali-T880 MP4 GPU clocked at 700MHz. The smartphone is fast, indeed. However, we have noticed that with prolonged heavy use, it tends to get very warm and its performance drops. A similar thing has happened with the Zopo Speed 8, while we have been testing it. It will be interesting to test other Helio X20/X25-based devices, to see whether this is a pattern of the chipset's behaviour or it happens for other reasons. The chipset supports high-end cameras with 4K video capabilities, fluent running of customized UsI, and wide range of networks, so it definitely is at place with the LeEco Le 2. The SoC is aided by 3GB of double-channel, 933MHz LPDDR3 RAM and 32GB of eMMC 5.1 storage. Sequential and random reading/writing from/to the memory is very fast as per Androbench's results. The storage is non-expandable. The sensor combo of the model includes a proximity, light, Hall (orientation), gravity, linear acceleration sensors as well as an accelerometer, compass, gyroscope, various rotation vectors, etc. On the back below the camera is placed a rectangular fingerprint sensor with rounded edges. It unlocks the device in 0.15 seconds and provides a 360-degree recognition. Saving a fingerprint ID is fast and easy, and the device unlocks very quickly, indeed.

Cameras

LeEco Le 2 features a 16-megapixel OmniVision camera with a PureCel-S OV16880 sensor. This is the industry's first 1/3-inch 16-megapixel image sensor. It incorporates a new 1-micron pixel technology, which enables ultra-high resolution image and video capture. The sensor also features a buried color filter array (BCFA) technology that reduces pixel crosstalk and improves signal-to-noise ratio performance. The sensor is coupled with a 5-element lens with an f/2.0 aperture and a dual-tone LED flash. The ball-type closed-loop motor and PDAF ensure super-fast autofocus in 0.09 seconds. The output photos from the primary camera are with a resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels. It also makes slo-mo videos and 4K videos at 30fps. You can see a sample 4K video below. The front-facing camera of the model packs an 8-megapixel OV8865 OmniBSI-2 1/3.2-inch sensor with a 1.4 micronpixels along with a 76.5-degree wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture. It makes photos with a resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels and 1080p videos @ 30fps. The camera app looks different than standard, but actually has all the typical settings you're familiar with, including HDR, Night, Beauty, Scene modes, adjustment of the White Balance, ISO, Exposure, etc. The settings of the video and front-facing shooter are limited to resolution choice, store location, and shutter sound. Our personal, subjective view of the photo and video quality is that they are excellent. The selfies also appear to be of very good quality. You can check out the photo and video samples below and judge for yourself.

Audio

A large portion of LeEco's business is media-related, so it is not a surprise that for the Superphone, the company has chosen to upgrade the standard set of audio equipment. For starters, you will definitely notice that there is no 3.5mm headphone jack. This is because LeEco opted out to route all music through the USB Type-C port in order to get rid of the analog audio signal and provide a more 'lossless' audio experience. The USB Type-C cable provides ultra-high isolation technology and more accurate sound field reduction. In addition, the company has developed a proprietary technology called Continual Digital Lossless Audio (CDLA), which is patented. It has also made CDLA headphones, which are compatible with the handset, but are not included in the package. Those of you who do not wish to part with their old ear-/headphones should not worry. There is a 3.5mm - to USB Type-C cable included in the package. If you possess CDLA headphones, you have to switch on this feature from the Sounds and vibration section of the Settings menu. From the same section you can also switch on and off the Dolby Atmos feature. We ran our audio test by using the RightMark Audio Analyzer software and the TASCAM US-2x2 audio interface, which showed a Very Good overall result for the LeEco Le 2. When we look into the details, however, it turns out that this result is much better than other "Very Good" ones. The smartphone excels in three features - frequency response, total harmonic distortion and IMD + Noise, where other devices are simply Average or Good. In THD + Noise the model scores Good, and all the other features are rated as Very Good. This means that the device's audio setup is much better than average. We cannot help but share that the sound from the loudspeaker is also better than average, though this is a subjective assessment.

Battery

LeEco Le 2 packs a 3000 mAh Li-Pol battery that is non-removable. It arrives with a fast charging tech on board and a charging adapter that has a power output of 3.6-8V/3A and 12V/2A. The charger is quite big and has two pins as per the US standard of electric system sockets. The PCMark Work battery life test showed 6 hours and 4 minutes, which is normal for a 3000 mAh battery. Gionee S8 has the same battery capacity, but scores higher. This is mainly due to the difference in CPUs. Le 2's chipset is more powerful and more power consuming. The test has been performed with the brightness level calibrated at 200 nits, following Futuremark's instructions. During the test period the battery took 2 hours and 10 minutes to charge in full from 0% to 100%. As usual, from the beginning, it was charging faster and for less than 40 minutes it reached 35% of its charge. The last 10% to 100% needed 25 minutes to charge. Battery life is supported by a Power saving management app. It includes an Ultra-long standby during sleep option, which is switched on by default. The Battery assistant is actually the Battery saver, which is turned off by default and you can set it up to turn on automatically at a desired battery level. The app also allows you to optimize the number of phone wakes, to manage, which apps, running in the background, should be saved from cleaning, and which not. There is also an option to clean all apps that are running, when you lock the screen. Of course, there is a Battery Usage option for monitoring the current status of the battery at any time. For further convenience, you can opt to switch on an indicator of the charge percentage to appear next to the battery icon on top of the display.

Final thoughts

LeEco Le 2 has a very rare quality - the longer you have it, the more you like it. It is not just about specs, but rather the overall combination of professional design, powerful chipset, high-end camera, good display and very good audio. All this is topped by a customized UI, which is very intuitive and user-friendly. If LeEco continues making such devices, it will easily take a permanent place in the top smartphone manufacturers of the world. Meanwhile, you can enjoy using a Le 2 (X620) as your everyday personal assistant, entertainer, window to the world, or simply - phone.
