Cubot Dinosaur ReviewCubot is a well-known brand among the audience interested in smartphones produced in China. It manufactures mainly entry-level and mid-range smartphones priced quite reasonably, which helped it establish a firm position in the Chinese smartphone market. It does out a flagship device now and then, like the CheetahPhone for example, but these are isolated cases. The late model Cubot released in the market is called Dinosaur, mainly because of its large-capacity battery and solid build with anti-slip coating on the back. Read on and discover whether it deserves its name.
The review unit has been provided by Cubot

Specifications

Cubot Dinosaur is built around a 5.5-inch IPS display with GFF full lamination and an HD resolution (720 x 1280). It has a contrast ratio of 1300:1, a typical brightness of 450 cd/sq.m. and covers 100% of the sRGB color space. The display is rimmed by 2.2 mm thin bezels and is covered with a 2.5D curved glass. Under the model's hood is integrated a MediaTek MT6735A chipset. The 'A' version of the SoC has a 1.3GHz quad-core CPU and a 450MHz dual-core Mali-T720 MP2 GPU. Its performance is backed by 3GB of LPDDR3 single-channel RAM, clocked at 533MHz. The on-board storage measures 16GB RAM. It is eMMC 4.5 type, clocked at 200MHz and can be expanded with up to 32GB. The camera department of the model includes an 8-megapixel rear shooter along with a 2-megapixel front facing one. Both are interpolated to 13MP and 5MP, respectively. The best feature of the Dinosaur should be its 4150 mAh battery. This is a high-density 650 Wh/L accumulator, which is removable and should provide 22h of 4G surfing, 30h of 2G talk time, 130h of music playback, and 20h of video playback. The smartphone runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow and supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, USB OTG, HotKnot, and GPS/A-GPS. It is equipped with two SIM card slots and works with quad-band 2G GSM, dual-band 3G WCDMA, and quad-band 4G FDD-LTE Cat. 5 networks. Here's Cubot Dinosaur's complete specifications.

What's in the box

Cubot Dinosaur is packed in a simple, rectangular, white box with the company's logo on top and some details about the model on the bottom. Inside together with the smartphone are placed a power adapter, USB cable, user manual in English and a silicone back case, which should provide reliable protection as it is tougher than the average soft silicone cases we've seen and corresponds to the model's name.

Design and build

Cubot Dinosaur is an entry-level smartphone with a solid design. The manufacturer has tried and succeeded in providing some added value in this regard. For starters, in the heart of the device is placed a stainless steel chassis and frame. Cubot has used a 18/8 stainless steel (A2/SAE 304), which means that it contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. A two-axis robot has been used for the electroplating and no mercury or cadmium have been used for the production as to lessen the negative effect on the environment. On the front, the 2.5D curved glass covering the frontal area seamless blends with the stainless steel frame. The latter has 2.2 mm bezels. On the back, the hard plastic cover has a rubberized coating. On one hand, it provides a steady and comfortable grip. On the other, the rhomboid pattern formed by 4499 "stars" (yes, it looks like the one on some Xiaomi models) form a visually appealing back cover design. The physical buttons (volume and power) are made of metal too. The back is removable, so is the battery. Despite the large accumulator, the device manages to retain a relatively thin waistline of 8.8 mm. It is a bit on the heavier side with a weight of 202 grams, but is reasonably compact with a width of 77.2 mm and a height of 152.3 mm. The model has three color options - a black one with silver frame, a white one with gold frame, and an all-gold color variant. We are reviewing a black Cubot Dinosaur.

Controls

The first and most distinguishing thing about the Cubot Dinosaur is that its back and battery are removable, unlike the myriad of smartphones with built-in batteries lately. Hence, it does not have a dual-SIM card tray positioned on one of the sides. Under the back cover are placed three separate slots - two for micro-SIM cards and one for a microSD card. So, if you prefer to enjoy the flexibility of using two SIM cards, you can still use some extra storage - another big plus for this model. The specs say that the storage can be expanded with a TF card, this is just another name of the microSD card. In terms of physical buttons, ports and so on, the Dinosaur is quite minimalist. On the top frame are placed a micro USB 2.0 port and a 3.5 mm jack. On the right hand side are the volume and power button. They are very tactile and comfortably positioned to work with. The bottom and left side of the frame are intact. On the back, at the upper end to the left the primary camera is placed accompanied by an LED flash to its right. At the back's bottom is placed s grille for the single speaker inside the device. On the cover itself are imprinted the Cubot logo and some production information. On the front of the device, above the display are placed the LED notification light, earpiece and selfie snapper. The LED notification light is referred to as a Breathing light in the Settings menu and can be switched on and off. Below the display is the capacitive navigation bar. The icons are not backlit, but are clearly visible at all light conditions. The back button is on the right side of the home one.

Display

Cubot Dinosaur features a 5.5-inch IPS display with an HD resolution. This is a GFF fully laminated screen with its top layer being a 2.5D curved glass. It is fast and responsive. According to the official specs, the display panel should have a typical brightness of 450 cd/sq.m. and a typical static contrast ratio of 1300:1, while it covers 100% of the sRGB color space. Our measurements show that our unit is relatively close the specified white luminance, namely - 444 and 439 nits at 100% and 75% of brightness, respectively. However, the black luminance values are very high and as a result the contrast ratio is very low - 403-407:1. In addition, as long as it concerns the color temperature, the white point one exceeds 11500K at all brightness levels, which means that colors look colder than average. The viewing angles are very good. You can tweak the Display from the corresponding section of the Settings menu. It includes the MiraVision tech and Daydream (screen saver) functions as well as the LiveDisplay, which allows you to adjust the color temperature, color calibration and brightness mode of the screen.
Brightness White luminance Black luminance Contrast Color temperature
100 % 443.735 cd/m2 1.102 cd/m2 403 : 1 11525 K
75 % 439.000 cd/m2 1.089 cd/m2 403 : 1 11787 K
50 % 315.567 cd/m2 0.779 cd/m2 405 : 1 11835 K

OS, UI and software

Cubot Dinosaur runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which is close to its stock variant. From the lock screen you can access directly either the voice search, camera app, or the home screen. On the latter are placed the "Ok Google" voice search bar, which is pinned to the top of the screen and cannot be removed. It also appears on the same place in the list of apps and stays always on top, no matter how down you scroll. The two rows of docked apps on the home screen include Camera, Gallery, Music and Settings (upper row), Dialer, Messenger, App tray icon, Contacts, and default Browser. The App tray icon opens the list of apps, which is scrollable downwards and upwards, just like in Marshmallow, but lacks the top row of most frequently used apps. The rest of the options are pretty standard. A single swipe from the top of the screen brings up the Notifications, and a second one - the Quick Settings menu, which contains the usual options, including HotKnot and a flashlight (accessible only from here). A single tap on the menu button, opens up the Task manager, while a long press on an empty space on the home screen brings up the Widgets and Wallpapers menu.
The Settings menu is typical for Android 6.0, but has two tabs. The first is called General and lists the most frequently used options. The second is named All and under it you'll find the standard groups of options. The first, of course is the Wireless & networks one, which includes a Turbo download and HotKnot function. Besides the MiraVision, Adaptive brightness and Daydream options, the Display section offers a LiveDisplay menu. It allows you to adjust the screen as to make it more comfortable for reading and reduce the eye strain. This menu allows you to choose the operation mode of the display (automatic, off, day, night) and adjust the color temperature during the day and night, and the color calibration. There is a Gesture Settings section as well from where you can activate several smart motions for operating the phone and gestures for opening apps. Under Personal you'll see a One-handed operation option. It actually means that if you switch it on, you can choose how the dialpad would be displayed - with the pad close to the left or the right, so it is more comfortable to dial a number with one hand. Finally, if you open the Quick Menu and you long press the Settings icon in it, you will activate the System UI Tuner. When activated, it appears as the last option after About Phone in the Settings menu. It lets you edit the Quick Menu items, toggle which apps' icons you want to see in the Status bar, show the battery percentage inside the battery icon on the Status bar. There is also a Demo mode, which is like a mock home screen as it shows a full Wi-Fi icon, a full Network icon, a full battery icon, and 6 o'clock for the time.
The apps on Cubot Dinosaur are accessed via the App Tray icon on the home screen. They are listed in alphabetical order on one screen, which can be scrolled down- and upwards. There are almost no special apps pre-installed. All you get are the standard Backup, Browser, Calculator, Calendar, Camera, Clock, Contacts, Downloads, File Manager, FM Radio, Music, Phone, Sound Recorder, etc. The rest of the apps are part of the Google Play Services. The only different thing you'll notice is the Clean Master app, it is also accessible from the Settings menu, and is directly connected to managing battery life, so it will be discussed in the Battery section of this review. Finally, there is a Wireless update icon, which opens the corresponding section with information about the current version of the OS installed and an option to check for updates.

Networks, calls and connectivity

Cubot Dinosaur has two slots for micro-SIM cards, accessible by opening the back cover. Both work on a dual standby mode. The device supports quad-band 2G GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), dual-band 3G WCDMA (900, 2100 MHz), and quad-band 4G FDD-LTE Cat. (800, 1800, 2100, 2600 MHz) networks. It had excellent reception and signal strength throughout our testing period, and calls were impeccable. As long as it concerns the wireless connectivity options, the model supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Hotspot, and Bluetooth 4.0. All function properly. The HotKnot function is also on board and is deeply integrated at all levels, for example when you take a photo you have an immediate option to share if via HotKnot. You also have a Turbo download option, which allows you to combine Wi-Fi and 3G/4G networks for downloading faster files that are larger than 20MB. The smartphone supports GPS/A-GPS only and has managed to discover a good number of navigation satellites with a relatively good accuracy of up to 3 meters. The USB On-the-Go function works as well.

Performance

Cubot Dinosaur is equipped with a MediaTek MT6735A chipset. This version of the MT6735 SoC has a 1.3GHz quad-core CPU and a dual-core Mali-T720 MP2 clocked at 450MHz. This chipset is largely used in entry-level smartphones and devices, which need strong power efficient processing. Being all about long-lasting battery and an affordable price, it is not a surprise that the Dinosaur features this SoC. However, the AnTuTu and Geekbench scores are a surprise as they are more typical for devices with the octa-core MT6753 chipset. The SoC's work is aided by 3GB of single-channel LPDDR3 RAM clocked at 533MHz and 16GB of built-in memory - type eMMC 4.5, clocked at 200MHz. It can be expanded with up to 32GB with a TF (microSD) card. Of those 16GB of storage, 11.23GB are available to the user. The reading and writing speeds are quite fast for a device of this class. The on-board sensors are limited to a proximity, light sensor, and accelerometer.

Cameras

The camera department of the Cubot Dinosaur includes an 8-megapixel OmniVision primary shooter with a PureCel OV8856 sensor with a 1/4" size and a 1.12-micron pixel architecture. This is a very compact and power efficient camera sensor capable of shooting FHD videos at 30fps. It is coupled with a 0.5A LED flash and a 5-element blue glass lens with an f/2.0 aperture. The output images are software interpolated to 13MP. The front-facing camera packs a 2-megapixel GalaxyCore GC2355 sensor with a 1/5" size and a 1.75μm pixel, combined with a 4-element lens with an f/2.8 aperture. The output photos are software interpolated to 5MP. The camera apps for both cameras are standard and both are almost identical. The one of the front camera is a bit more limited, but has a Screen simu flash option. If switched on, it uses the screen as a flash when you take photos with the front camera.

Audio

The overall result of our audio test showed a Very Good mark, which must be investigated in detail as there can be a huge difference between two Very Good marks. For starters, the Cubot Dinosaur excels only in frequency response. It scores only Average in THD + Noise, and Good in THD (total harmonic distortion) and IMD at 10kHz. We made the test as usual with the RightMark Audio Analyzer software and the TASCAM US-2x2 audio interface.

Battery

Cubot Dinosaur's main selling point is its large-capacity battery. The high-density 650 Wh/L accumulator has a capacity of 4150 mAh, which does provide some real stamina. The PCMark Work battery life test confirms that by showing an impressive result of 10 hours and 22 minutes! The battery uses a regular 5V/1.2A charger and during our test period it took 5 hours and 41 minutes to charge completely from 0% to 100%. Most of the time the output power of the adapter was 4.43-4.5V/1.1-1.15A. The device offers several software options, with which you can manage your battery life and take out the maximum of its capabilities. First, there is a Clean Master tool, which lets you clean junk files from the system and free memory, launch an advanced clean or a security back up. It also contains a Battery Saver option. Secondly, there is a separate Power Saving Mode, which lets you switch between Normal, Super and Extreme mode. The latter changes the skin to black and white and allows to make phone calls and send/receive messages. As per standard, there is a Battery Saver, which you can turn on at a certain level of the charge as well as a battery status monitor. As you already know, the Doze mode is integrated in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and is automatically activated, when the smartphone is in perfect stillness.

Final thoughts

Cubot Dinosaur is priced around $120 and for your money you get a solidly build smartphone with a battery that provides enough juice, so you can enjoy many worry-free hours of reading, phone calls, internet browsing and listening to music. The SIM card slots and the slot for additional storage are separated, so this is another plus to those of you who prefer this type of setup. All this sums up to a package that is tempting, if your budget is limited and you want to spend it on a reliable device.
