Vernee Apollo Lite ReviewVernee is a new smartphone start-up manufacturer from China, which shook the market a bit as it managed to announce and launch two interesting devices for a very short time. These are the Vernee Thor and Apollo Lite. Vernee Apollo Lite has just hit the market and we're quick in getting one and making a detailed review, so you can get a better idea of the smartphone. Deemed as one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest device with a Helio X20 chipset in the market, Apollo Lite packs a number of features that you will usually find in flagship devices with far more expensive price tags. Let's see how the model actually behaves and whether it manages to put all those ten CPU cores to good use.

Specifications

Vernee Apollo Lite is built around a 5.5-inch IGZO (IPS) display from Sharp with an FHD resolution (1080 x 1920). Its protection relies on a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and the top glass layer has 2.5D curved edges for seamless blending with the frame and improved touch experience. The display is on top of a CNC crafted all-metal body that houses a MediaTek Helio X20 (MT6797) chipset. The latter includes ten 2.3GHz CPU cores and a 700MHz quad-core Mali-T880 MP4 GPU. This powerhouse is backed by 4GB of dual-channel LPDDR3 RAM clocked at 933MHz and the on-board memory measures 32GB. It is the eMMC 5.1 type and can be expanded with up to 128GB. Due to its advanced SoC the model is equipped with a proximity, light, and Hall sensor, an accelerometer, compass, gyroscope as well as a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. It supports quad-band 2G GSM, dual-band 3G WCDMA and quad-band 4G LTE Cat. 6 networks. The rest of its main connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and 802.11n at 5GHz, Wi-Fi HotSpot and Direct, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS/A-GPS, USB Type-C, OTG. The camera department of the model includes a 16-megapixel primary shooter, equipped with a Samsung S5K3P3 ISOCELL sensor, a 6-element lens lens with an f/2.0, PDAF and a dual-tone LED flash. What's in the box

Vernee Apollo Lite is inside a stylish, rectangular, dark gray box, with the brand's and model's name on top and on the side and with some details about the specifications on the bottom. The smartphone is placed in a special compartment and is wrapped in white foil. As a standard packaging, there is a plastic cover on the screen, which is placed on a pre-applied anti-scratch display protector - we usually remove both in order to show off the display better. The back is protected by a plastic cover as well. Below the device are placed a user manual and an OTA update card, a fast charger, a micro USB to USB Type-C cable, and a pin for the SIM tray.

Design, build and controls

Vernee Apollo Lite will appeal to those of you who like the subtle elegance of business class devices. From the very first touch and after looking into the details of its build, it is obvious that it has been made of premium materials with attention to detail. The smartphone has been meticulously crafted and features a metal body made after the CNC process. It has been perfected with 3D polishing and anodizing to achieve this eye-pleasing matte texture and touch experience. The only area made from a different material is the antenna one. The body is rectangular with rounded corners. The 3D back cover has a 30% bevel angle and its edges are delicately chamfered. The edges of the front of the devices are slightly chamfered as well and meet perfectly the 2.5D curved edges of the top glass layer of the screen. Vernee says that the Apollo Lite has been "designed for best handling experience" with "perfect length-to-width ratio". With a waistline of 9.2 mm, we could easily say that this is one of the thickest smartphones in the 5.5-inch class. However, it does look slimmer thanks to its dual C chamfered design and according to Vernee, the visual thickness is only 6 mm. The device is not very tall - 152 mm and has an average width for its size class - 76 mm. Its weight measures 175 grams, including the battery. The device is available in moonlight silver and space gray colors. We are reviewing a space gray unit and it is really a solidly build, visually pleasing, well-made device. An interesting feature of Apollo Lite is that it has two separate SIM card slots positioned on the left hand side of the smartphone. When you open them for the first time, you'll see a plastic card inside, which is just place there to help you understand, which type of card goes where. It should be removed when you want to place a SIM or SD card. So the upper slot is for a micro-SIM card and the lower one is for a nano-SIM or a microSD card. Both open up with one and the same pin. On the right hand side of the device are the volume rocker and the power button. The bottom frame houses a USB Type-C port with two speaker grilles on both sides, only the right one houses an actual speaker. The top frame is reserved for a 3.5 mm jack. On the front of the device, above the display you can see the selfie camera and earpiece, while on the back are placed a dual-tone LED flash accompanied by the rear camera module to its right and below the camera is the fingerprint sensor. Both are rectangular, with rounded edges. The navigation bar is an on-screen one and from the corresponding section in the Settings you can choose for it to hide or not as well as choose its appearance, so it suits your needs better.

Display

Vernee states that it has "established deep cooperation with Sharp for customized IGZO screen" for the Apollo Lite. IGZO stands for indium gallium zinc oxide - the name of the elements, which create the semiconducting material used in this type of displays. It has 20-50 times the electron mobility of amorphous silicon used in standard LCD displays, coupled with the low off current, it is also more power efficient, besides being lighter and thinner. The screen of Apollo Lite has a 5.5-inch diagonal size and an FHD resolution (1080 x 1920). According to the specifications, it covers 95% of the NTSC color space, has 450 cd/sq.m. peak brightness and 1000:1 static contrast ratio. It employs two technologies for better viewing experience - BluLight Defender and Chameleon Display, which let you adjust the screen's warmth/coldness for more comfortable reading and allow the screen to adapt intelligently to the surrounding light conditions. The screen is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with 2.5D curved edges. There's a pre-applied screen protector, but we have removed it. All in all, it is a good, responsive screen. In case you want to tweak your viewing experience, you can the MiraVision options and in order to optimize the power efficiency of the screen, you can manage the Daydream function behaviour to suite your usage patterns at best. The display of Apollo Lite has good white luminance values with the peak brightness being 445.2 cd./sq.m. However, the black luminance values are not that impressive, so the contrast ratio cannot exceed 980:1, which is the top value from all five brightness levels tested. In addition, by default the temperature of the white point is cold with values almost reaching 10000 K. You can tweak the display from the Display settings by using the MiraVision tech, which lets you manage the picture mode (color saturation), dynamic contrast, and the BluLight Defender, which increases/decreases the blue light emitted from the screen in order to protect your eyes, if you happen to spend long hours working with the device. Color deviation in the blue and red range is within normal limits, but is a bit higher in the green range as seen from the CIE diagram below. The viewing angles are not impressive. Color reproduction is OK, but the display loses brightness when viewed from a side.

OS, UI and software

Vernee Apollo Lite runs stock Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The guys from Vernee are working on their own skin called VOS. It will be available in the company's forums in the future and its source will be open for additional customization. So for now you have to deal with a very clean and fast Android M. If you have prior experience with the OS, nothing will be too hard to find or work with. There's a classic Lock screen with shortcuts to the camera and dialer. The Home screen has a docked row of apps, including the Dialer, Contacts, App tray icon, Messenger and Browser. Above them are positioned the Camera, Gallery, Settings and PlayStore apps. On the top of the screen is the Google voice search service. By pressing longer on an empty space on the Home screen, you will open the Widgets menu that lets you choose from several preset widgets and wallpapers to customize the appearance of your device. A single swipe down from the top of the display brings up the notifications and a second one - the Quick Settings menu. The latter includes the typical shortcuts to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Data connection, DND mode, Airplane mode, Audio profiles, Auto-rotate, Flashlight, Location, Cast (screen). To open up the list with recently used apps, you just have to long press the Home button. The Volume and Power off menus don't hold surprises.
As usual, the Settings menu starts with the Wireless & networks set of options, which allow you to manage Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, Data usage and the SIM cards. Of course, there are options regarding the Wi-Fi Hotspot, and Turbo download functions. The second major group of settings is called Device and from there you can manage the Display, Sound and notifications, Apps, Storage & USB, Battery, and Memory. From the Display section you can opt for various MiraVision settings that will help you improve your viewing experience, including the color temperature, contrast and so on. You can also cast content from the smartphone to a larger display. The Sound & notification menu includes the typical four pre-set sound profiles and DND mode management. From the Device group of settings you can manage the Apps, monitor the Storage, Data usage, Battery and Memory. The Personal set of options is where you customize various services such as the Location, Security, Accounts, Google, Language & input, and Backup & data reset. Of those the Security menu is the largest one and includes the fingerprint management section. Finally, the fourth group is called System and from there you can adjust the Date & time, Schedule power on and off, manage the Navigation Bar, take advantage of several Accessibility options, including captions, use Printing services and read About Phone.
All apps are listed in alphabetical order on one screen that can be scrolled up and down. They are accessed from the App tray on the Home screen. Only the top list of four most used apps is omitted, all else has a classic Android 6.0 appearance, including a Browser, Calculator, Calendar, Camera, Chrome browser, Clock, Contacts, Downloads, Email, File Manager, FM Radio, Gallery, Messenger, Music, Phone, PlayStore, Search, Settings and Sound Recorder.

Networks, calls and connectivity

Vernee Apollo Lite supports tri-band 2G GSM (900, 1900, 2100 MHz), dual-band 3G WCDMA (900 and 2100 MHz) and quad-band 4G FDD-LTE (800, 1800, 2100, 2600 MHz ) networks. Aida64 revealed that our review unit also supports TDD-LTE at 2300 MHz (B40). The device is equipped with two separate, side-mounted SIM card trays. Both cards work on a dual standby principle and support 4G, respectively. The first slot is for a micro SIM card, while the second can house either a nano SIM or a micro SIM or a microSD card. We had some difficulty opening one of the slots at first because of the pre-inserted plastic demos of cards, but once they are removed, everything works fine. The smartphone did not have any problems connecting to the three types of networks, with the reception being steady and strong at all times. Call quality is good, no side noises or anything else of that matter that interferes with the conversation. The model supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0. Both work perfectly. We always test Bluetooth connection with earphones and a laptop - the smartphone managed to pair with both without problems. Wi-Fi reception is excellent even in areas, where the signal is generally weak. A Turbo Download feature is on board as well for transferring files larger than 20MB by using Wi-Fi and Mobile Data connections simultaneously. In case you need to watch content from your smartphone on a larger display you can cast it via the corresponding function, suffice you have a compatible adapter for your monitor or TV. The model can also be used a Wi-Fi Hotspot. It also features a USB Type-C, which provides OTG support, but can also be used with compatible headphones for listening to music with lossless quality (like the CDLA headphones from LeEco). However, Vernee opted to retain the 3.5 mm jack, so if you're using standard ear-/headphone, there won't be any need of a suitable adapter. As long as it concerns satellite navigation, Apollo Lite managed to detect satellites from both GPS and Glonass systems and to allocate them with great accuracy.

Performance

Vernee Apollo Lite is the third smartphone we review that packs a MediaTek Helio X20 (MT6797) chipset. The other two devices are Zopo Speed 8 and LeEco Le 2 (X620). Apollo Lite scores higher than both in all benchmark tests and more specifically, it hits 93030 points in AnTuTu and 5484 points in multi-core Geekbench. PCMark's score, which provides very real life results, is 4586 points - which, however, is less than the rivals' results. It looks like Vernee has made a good use of the specific tri-cluster architecture of this system-on-chip, which includes 2x 2.3GHz Cortex-A72 cores, 4x 2GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and 4x 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores. It also includes the powerful four-core Mali-T880 MP4 GPU clocked at 700MHz. The chipset is aided by 4GB of dual-channel LPDDR3 RAM clocked at 933MHz and it really helps not notice the number of apps running in the background. The built-in memory measures 32GB and can be expanded with up to 128GB. The Androbench test reveals reading and writing speeds that are close to those of the Zopo Speed 8, which are excellent for a eMMC 5.1 memory. The model is equipped with a proximity, light, and Hall sensor, an accelerometer, compass, gyroscope as well as a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The latter has a third generation pressure-type fingerprint sensor. Together with the optimization of Android 6.0 Marshmallow and chip-level protection, you will be able to unlock your device in just 0.1 second. It provides a 360-degree recognition, has a FIDO certification, and can unlock the device even when the screen is off. There's a secure and independent ISP for the fingerprint sensor, which ensures its intelligent learning and adjustment over time. Saving a fingerprint ID is very easy and unlocking the device does happen in a snap.

Cameras

Vernee Apollo Lite arrives with a 16-megapixel Samsung S5K3P3 ISOCELL primary camera and a 5-megapixel Samsung S5K5E8 CMOS BSI front-facing snapper. This is almost the same camera setup of the Ulefone Future, which we have reviewed lately, the only difference being that the selfie camera is a Samsung S5K5E2 one. Ulefone's primary camera did not perform well during our test, so we've been wary about the Apollo Lite one. However, a camera module is not only a sensor, it includes a lens architecture and software optimization, which might turn out to provide better results. According to Vernee, the main camera of the smartphone has a dual ISP with the second processor being MediaTek's ImagiQ for dynamic depth of field. The sensor is coupled with an RWB filter and has 1 μm pixel size. The lens has a blue light filter and the whole setup is aided by a dual-tone LED flash. You can check the image quality of the primary camera from the sample images below. It can record 4K videos @ 30fps, so we've uploaded a sample video as well. The camera app is pretty standard you get all the usual settings for changing the shooting mode, ISO, white balance, exposure and so on.

Audio

For our audio tests we use the RightMark Audio Analyzer software and the TASCAM US-2x2 audio interface. Vernee Apollo Lite scores Very good as a total result. It excels only in frequency response, while the THD + Noise is rated as Good. To put it simply, the device has a standard audio setup and quality, so you can't expect impressive audio experience.

Battery

Vernee Apollo Lite is equipped with a 3180 mAh Li-Polymer battery coupled with MediaTek's Pump Express 3.0 technology. It arrives with a fast charger that provides 5V, 7V, 9V/2A and 12V/1.5A output power. Due to the quick charging tech, it takes only 30 minutes to charge the battery from 0 to 50% and 10 minutes of charge ensure 1 hour of talk time. The battery's performance is optimized via several channels. The hardware one is using a power-efficient IGZO display and a power-efficient chipset. The second one is software and includes the Doze mode, built in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and the battery optimization software loaded on the device, which includes the standard status monitor, battery saver, battery optimization and scheduled power on and off. During our test period the Apollo Lite battery charged from 0% to 100% in 1 hour and 58 minutes. It needed 28 minutes to reach 30% of charge and another 21 minutes to double it to 60%. 7 additional minutes were needed to reach 70% and the rest to 100% needed almost a whole hour. The PCMark work battery life test showed a result of 7 hours and 50 minutes, which is an excellent result for a device with a 3180 mAh battery. It has been performed with the display's brightness calibrated at 200 nits as per Futuremark's recommendations.

Final thoughts

Vernee Apollo Lite is probably one of the cheapest Helio X20 smartphones available in the market. It definitely pleases with elegant design, solid build and excellent features/price ratio, so if you're on the hunt for a powerful device that will not cost you a fortune, considering Apollo Lite is a must.
