21 Май 2016, 21:37:19

Meizu m3 Note ReviewMeizu is gradually establishing itself as a reliable smartphone manufacturer that has a good portfolio of noteworthy devices. Actually, it is one of the biggest players in the Chinese smartphone market. According to Meizu's financial report from December 2015, the company has surpassed the 20 million mark of units sold. This number is impressive, if compared to the 4.4 million units sold for 2014. For increased sales in 2016, the Meizu will rely flagship devices such as the Pro 6, but also to devices like the Meizu m3 Note, which combine attractive design, specs and price. Whether the smartphone will live up to the audience's expectations is about to be seen, but after reviewing it, we can say that this one might turn out to be an Ace up Meizu's sleeve.

Specifications

Meizu m3 Note combines a high-grade metal unibody with a 5.5-inch GFF (fully laminated) IPS display, which has an FHD resolution and incorporates T2X-1 glass with LTPS (Low Temperature PolySilicon). According to the official specifications the panel has a contrast ratio of 1000:1 and a typical brightness of 450 cd/sq.m. Power is supplied by a 4100 mAh battery with a serious software support for power management. The Li-Pol accumulator is non-removable and should provide up to 15 hours of talk time. Hardware-wise, the model is based on a MediaTek Helio P10 MT6755. The SoC in this particular case features eight 1.85GHz CPU cores coupled with a dual-core 700MHz Mali-T860 MP2 GPU and 2 or 3GB of single channel LPDDR3 RAM clocked at 933MHz. The eMMC 5.1 internal memory is either 16GB, or 32GB. As long as it concerns the camera, the primary shooter packs a 13-megapixel OmniVision OV13853 sensor with a 1/3.06-inch size and a 1.12-micron pixel. It is coupled with a TrueBright ISP engine, dual-tone LED, phase-detection AF, a 5-element lens with an f/2.2 aperture, and a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 lens protection. The secondary camera is equipped with a 5-megapixel Samsung S5K5E8, 1/5"-sized sensor with a 1.12-micron pixel. It is coupled with a 4-element lens with an f/2.0 aperture. The device also arrives with support for dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi 802.11n at 5GHz, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, and Bluetooth 4.0. The model works with GPS/A-GPS and Glonass navigation systems. The handset has a hybrid dual-SIM card tray, a fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button, and a plethora of other sensors on board. Here's the full list of Meizu m3 Note specifications.

What's in the box

Meizu m3 Note arrives in a white box with the model's name on top and a sticker with the specifications on the back. Inside is the smartphone and below it are placed a charger (US standard, so you might need an adapter, if you're living outside the US), a USB cable, a small user manual, to which is attached the SIM tray pin. The pin has an interesting design and the Flyme OS logo engraved. That's it. Not very generous, indeed.

Design and build

Meizu m3 Note is a beautifully crafted smartphone. It looks rather classic, which is nicely complemented by the search of symmetry in the overall placement of the controls. The metal unibody of the handset is made of a 6000 Series aluminum alloy and its finish is crafted with an anodic oxidation process. The non-removable back is matte, but in it are hewn out two horizontal lines - top and bottom, which reveal the glossy metal heart of the chassis and add a more elegant flair to the overall looks of the smartphone. The top layer of the display has 2.5D curved edges, which blend perfectly with the rest of the body. Both the screen and body look and feel very solid. All elements fir into place and the physical buttons are very comfortable to work with. Placed comfortably enough to be easily reached, they provide good response without protruding much as both the volume rocker and the power button are positioned in a small furrow, which shows off the glossy metal beneath and corresponds to the two horizontal lines on the back - small details that achieve a big impression. All ports provide excellent fit for the corresponding cables and the SIM tray opens and closes easily. The model is 75.5 mm wide, 153.6 mm tall and 8.2 mm deep. The bezels are not thin, but not very wide too. The overall size of the device is typical for one with a 5.5-inch display. With a weight of 163 grams, including the battery, the Meizu m3 Note is comfortable to hold without being heavy. The device is available in three colors: a gold back with a white front, a silver back with a white front, and a grey back with a black front. We are reviewing a silver with white unit that has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory.

Controls

Meizu m3 Note has a classic layout of the ports and buttons, which the company aimed to place in symmetry as to achieve a smooth and eye-appealing design. On the front above the screen, from left to the right are placed the front-facing camera, earpiece, and light sensor. Below the screen there is a single rectangular button with rounded corners. It functions both as a physical and capacitive button. If long pressed, it can either turn off the screen or start the Smart Voice. If tapped, while typing, it can either fold the keyboard or fold the keyboard and return. If tapped once, it serves as a back button, and if pressed once, it brings back the home screen. In addition, the home button has an embedded mTouch 2.1 fingerprint sensor. It can store up to 5 fingerprint IDs, unlocks the device in 0.2 seconds (unlocking was truly swift), and provides 360-degree recognition. On top of the device to the left is the 3.5mm jack accompanied by a noise-cancellation make. The bottom features two symmetrically positioned grilles with two screw bolts surrounding the micro USB 2.0 port. One of the grilles contains the speakerphone, the other - a second noise-cancelling mic. On the left side of the smartphone is the hybrid dual-SIM card tray, which can house either two nano-SIM cards, or a nano-SIM card and a microSD card for additional storage. The right hand side is where the volume rocker is - a single, prolonged button for volume up and down, along with a power button below it. On the back at the top end is the rear camera, centrally positioned, with the dual-tone LED below it and the Meizu logo.

Display

Meizu m3 Note packs a 5.5-inch LTPS display with an IPS panel and full lamination (GFF). The panel has an FHD resolution (1080 x 1920) and a pixel density of 403 ppi. The display is protected by a Dinorex T2X-1 glass. This is a product of the Japanese Nippon Electric Glass (NEG), which is scratch-resistant and shock-resistant. The glass is chemically strengthened and is almost perfectly clear and colorless without compromising color accuracy and saturation. The top glass layer has 2.5D curved edges, which seamlessly blend with the frame. The screen itself is very fast and responsive, navigating through the menus, swiping backwards and forwards, scrolling and browsing - everything is impressively zippy. Visual content and text are crisp and accurately displayed. As per standard, the IPS panel provides good viewing angles, both horizontally and vertically. The official specifications of the mode state that the panel has a static contrast ratio of 1000:1 and a typical brightness of 450 cd/m2. Our measurements showed that the white luminance when the brightness is at 100% is close to the specified figure and measures 426.377 cd/m2. The black luminance value, however, is 0.529 cd/m2, which means that the contrast ratio is 806:1. This level of static contrast ratio remains almost the same at all brightness levels. The white luminance significantly drops (5-fold) when the brightness is set at 50% - 81.29 cd/m2. The black luminance value also drops almost 5-fold to 0.101 cd/m2. The lowest values of the white and black point are 5.00 cd/m2 and 0.007 cd/m2, respectively. The color temperature is only slightly changed at the different brightness levels and evolves around the 7700-7800 K mark. If you find your screen to be too warm or too cold, you can adjust the color temperature to your preference from the Display settings.

OS, UI and software

Meizu m3 Note runs the proprietary Flyme OS based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. More specifically, it is the Flyme 5.1.3.0A version. If you're wondering what the 'A' stands for, this means that this version of the software is the Chinese one. International versions of the Flyme OS are marked with a 'G' at the end. Meizu's skin is deeply rooted and is actually a major overhaul of the whole Android system. Moreover, this is the Chinese version of the Flyme, which means it is way different to what we're all accustomed to. When we got the device it had an OTA update, which installed the Flyme 5.1.3.1A. This is a minor update for Wi-Fi performance optimization. Indeed, compared to other devices we have tested the Meizu m3 Note has shown a strong and steady Wi-Fi reception even in areas, where other smartphones have found it difficult to connect to our local area network. In addition, the Flyme 5.1.3.0A has several improvements over older OS versions. Some of them include the appearance of a Settings icon in the Quick menu, the possibility to select several apps from the home screen and move them all together to another, opening the Task Manager by swiping upwards from the bottom of the screen, customization of the display's color temperature, enjoying multitasking with simultaneous work with several windows. In terms of design the Flyme 5.1.3.0A has more vivid colors, the icons are flat, the system is smart to detect elements from the contents displayed on the screen and re-present them as integrated background, mainly in terms of matching colors, etc. The volume indicated does not offer any customization, however the Quick menu is rich in features and includes Wi-Fi on/off, SIM card priority, Bluetooth on/off, Mute on/off, Vibrate, Airplane mode, Rotation (of the screen), Location Info, AutoBrightness, Flashlight, SmartTouch, DND. You can open either half of the Quick menu or the whole list of quickly accessible features.
At a first glance the Settings menu is not very extensive and does not have a standard structure, but actually the options are rich and go deep under the main sections of the menu. The most typical set of options is the Wireless & networks one, which holds no surprises. The Sounds & notifications is a whole separate sets that allows you to manage the notifications and the status bar, the sounds and vibration, and the DND mode. The System set of options is the richest of all. Under it you have a personalize option, which provides a choice of themes (actually only one, the others are available for purchase and download from the Meizu Store), a choice of wallpapers, font and icons style. Then there is the Easy Mode, which makes the icons and fonts on the home screen larger and with a simpler layout for an easier way of using the device. The Display sub-menu is where you adjust the screen brightness, font-size, auto brightness (on/off), auto lock, and interestingly - the color temperature. The Fingerprint & security and the Language & time are pretty self-explanatory. Finally under System is placed the Accessibility set of features. It contains a Gesture wakeup set of options, which you can selectively activate and assign various tasks. The SmartTouch option brings up a floating dot when activated. It allows you to set different ways of interacting with it and some might find it a useful tool for navigating through the device. From the Accessibility menu you can also adjust the behaviour of the Home key when hold, the home button (when typing), the home screen search, and the earphones. Here are listed the Scheduled on & off and Text-to-speech output options. A Drive Assistant is another non-standard feature, which helps you adjust the smartphone's behaviour, while you're driving. The main Account menu is where you manage your Flyme accounts and other accounts you might have. Finally, there's the Device set of options, from where you can monitor the battery's performance and manage the various battery saving modes, manage the location services, apps and check the info about your device.
If you don't have prior experience with a Chinese version of the Flyme 5.1.3 this section might turn out to be useful to you. For starters, there are no Google apps. Instead, there is an App Store, via which you have to download the Google Installer. Only after it is installed, you can then download and install the PlayStore and other apps you need. However, a very common error happens, which prevents you from downloading and installing an app like the Chrome browser, for example (see the screenshot below). The error message reads "Can't download app. [APP NAME] can't be downloaded. Try again, and if the problem continues, get help troubleshooting.(Error retrieving information from server. [DF-DLA-15])." In order to solve this issue, you have to clear the Google Play Store cache and the Google Play Services cache. To do this go to the Settings> Apps> Select Play Store/Play Services> Clear Cache and Clear Data. If after this the problem persists, reboot the device and try to download again the app that has given the above mentioned error message. Being based on Android 5.1 Lollipop the Flyme 5.1.3 retains its permissions management system, meaning that when you open an app for the first time, you will be asked to allow or not permissions for it to access certain data on your device in order to function properly. Regarding the rest of the pre-installed apps they include a Clock, Gallery, Game Center, Music, Videos, Themes, News, Life and Security. A typical feature of the Game Center, Music, Videos, and Themes apps is that when you open them, you first see the options available for download and after that there are options to see, what's already present in the device. The Security apps is actually a large portion of the Flyme 5.1.3. and provides various useful tools for software protection and optimization as well as for improvement in performance. It contains a total of 8 tools, including Cleaner, Accelerator, Data, Harassment Blocking, Permissions, Power, Files, Anti-Virus. This Security app acts at system level. It monitors unstable operations and reports potential problems to the Cloud for analysis and troubleshooting to prevent damage to the system. It also manages to optimize memory use by optimizing system codes, compression, preventing apps being activated by each other, smart allocation of the memory between apps. All of this makes the system run faster, smoother and accelerates apps launching and running. The Power section itself is very extensive and will be described in the Battery section of this review.
Finally, there is a folder on the home screen, which contains several useful apps such as EBook, Map, Toolbox, User Center, Calendar, Calculator, File Explorer, Memos, Weather, Upgrade, Email. Recorder, Download, SmartRecorder. The most interesting one is the EBook. It allows you to read books that are already present on the device or available online. Moreover, you can choose the way the screen looks, while reading so it lessens the eye strain. Another interesting feature is the Toolbox. Opening it, you'll discover a flashlight, compass, mirror (opens up the front camera), level, ruler and magnifier (the rear camera magnifies what it sees). The new Flyme 5.1.3.1A also features several improvements of the camera app, such as the beauty mode, panorama, slow motion shooting, video, macro, and GIF plus adding powerful photo editing and sorting tools.

Networks, calls and connectivity

Meizu m3 Note is equipped with a dual-SIM card tray with hybrid functions. You can fit it in either two nano-SIM cards, or a nano-SIM card and a microSD card for additional storage. According to the specifications, the device supports a wide range of networks bands, including quad-band 2G GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), 2.5G CDMA 800 MHz, dual-band 3G TD-SCDMA (1880-1920, 2010-2025 MHz), tri-band 3G UMTS (900, 1900, 2100 MHz), tri-band 4G FDD-LTE (1800, 2100, 2600 MHz) and quad-band 4G TDD-LTE (1900, 2300, 2500, 2600 MHZ) along with VoLTE. The MTK Engineering test shows that our unit supports the above mentioned 2G and 4G bands, but from the 3G bands it supports quad-band 3G WCDMA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz). We haven't experienced any issues with signal reception and call quality whatsoever. The device behaves well in this regard under different networks and circumstances. We have already mentioned that we've noticed that after the latest Flyme update, the Meizu m3 Note has an impressively strong Wi-Fi reception, even in places, where other devices have difficulties connecting. The model supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n and 802.11n @ 5GHz along with Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth 4.0 (A2DP, EDR, LE). Detecting satellites for navigation is quick and easy. The device works both with GPS/A-GPS and Glonass, and provides location services with great accuracy. In addition, the device has an Wireless Display option, which is identical to the Cast Screen function, and, of course, you need a matching wireless display adapter for your TV or monitor in order to cast content from your phone.

Performance

Performance-wise, Meizu m3 Note relies on a MediaTek Helio P10 MT6755. After the Elephone P900, this is the second Helio P10 device we get to review. In Meizu's case the CPU cores are bit downclocked compared to Elephone P9000's. More specifically, it has eight Cortex A-53 cores clocked up to 1.85GHz, which work together with a dual-core 700MHz ARM Mali-T860 MP2 GPU. The TSMC HPC+ technology, on which the chipset is based, provides generally good performance by balancing tasks between the CPU and GPU, which also ultimately leads to decreased power consumption. Our test unit is the 2/16GB of RAM/storage version. The RAM is single-channel, LPDDR3, clocked at 933MHz, while the internal memory is eMMC 5.1 type. An interesting fact about the hardware design of the device, is that Meizu uses a 10-layer motherboard, which takes up less space and reduces internal interference, resulting into a more stable system. Compared to the Elephone P9000, the Meizu m3 Note scores a bit lower in all benchmarks, which is expected. The only exception is the Vellamo browser test made with Chrome, which is in favour of the m3 Note. What is more interesting, is that the Meizu model has 20 different sensors on board, all functional, which is not typical for a device of its class. All the sensors are shown in the CPU-X screenshots below. Some of them are gyroscope, accelerometer, orientation, rotation, magnetometer, step detector and counter (which are used by pedometers), gravity, proximity, light sensor, etc.

Cameras

Meizu m3 Note features an OmniVision PureCel primary camera, which packs a 13-megapixel OV13853 CMOS sensor with a 1/3.06-inch size and a 1.12-micron pixel. It is coupled with a TrueBright ISP engine and makes photos with 13.2 effective pixels - 4224 x 3136. The sensor is combined with a 5-element lens, which has an f/2.2 aperture and is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3. A dual-tone LED flash ensures enough natural light when needed. The warm light is positioned below the cold on. The primary camera is capable of making FHD video @ 30fps and utilizes phase detection autofocus. The secondary camera packs a 5-megapixel Samsung S5K5E8 sensor that outputs photos with a resolution of 2592 x 1944. The BSI CMOS sensor has a size of 1/5 inches and a 1.12 micron pixel. It works together with a 4-element lens with an f/2.0 aperture.

Battery

Meizu m3 Note arrives with a 4100 mAh Li-Pol battery, which is non-removable. According to the official specifications, it provides up to 15 hours of talk time in 2G and 3G networks. The 5V/2A charger, which is included in the package, is US standard, so have this in mind and prepare an adapter, in case you're based in a country with a different electricity socket standard. During our test period, the battery managed to charge from 0% to 100% for 2 hours and 47 minutes. The first 10% from 0 needed 25 minutes, while the first 50% from 0 needed 1 hour and 17 minutes to charge. In the beginning, while the battery has very small charge, the charging happens at 1.79A. This gradually decreases, when the battery reaches 50% and even more, while approaching 100% of its charge. The charger tends to get hot, while in operation. The FlymeOS on board the Meizu m3 Note features a whole Power Management suite, which provides you with powerful tools to manage your battery's life smartly. All power saving modes have been crafted after analyzing more than 100 usage scenarios. The system can allocate CPU cores according to its load status and achieve a proper balance between system temperature, performance and power consumption, while regulating the CPU frequency. Intelligent allocation can truly help realize the best conditions for hardware and prevent wasting power. You can choose from Low power, Super (power saving) mode, and Customize mode. The latter allows you customize the behaviour of your device depending on your own preferences. All in all, even without tweaking the power saving modes, the Meizu m3 Note demonstrated long battery life and will be a reliable device in this regard. The PCMark work battery test also proves this by showing a very good score for a 4100 mAh battery of 9 hours and 32 minutes. The test has been performed with the brightness calibrated at 200 cd/m2 as recommended by Futuremark.

Final thoughts

As a conclusion we can say that the Meizu m3 Note will appeal to those of you, who are looking for a solid, all-metal build, classic design and reliable, long-lasting battery. The model has a beautiful screen and if you don't need a performance beast, it might be the right device for you within the €220-250 price range.
