nubia Z11 Reviewnubia is a smartphone manufacturer headquartered in China with operations around the world, including North America, South America, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, and India. It is well-known for its innovative devices with high-end features targeted at adventurous users who want to pursue new experiences and an enhanced quality of life. nubia is in the fortunate position of being able to benefit from the extensive hardware and software experience and global footprint of the ZTE company, but it is a separate business. The latest flagship of the brand is the nubia Z11, which packs a number of high-end features and premium design. It is precisely the international version of this model that's the subject of the following review.
The review unit has been provided by nubia Technology Co., Ltd

Specifications

nubia Z11 sports a 7.5 mm thin metal body graced by a 5.5-inch bezelless display with an FHD resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and 2.5D curved top glass layer. It covers 96% of the NTSC color space and has a peak brightness of 500 cd/m². Power is supplied by a 3000 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 and NeoPower 2.0 for improved battery life management. The device runs nubia UI 4.0 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Here's the full list of nubia Z11 specifications.

What's in the box

nubia Z11 is packed in a black rectangular black box with a red inner lining, the nubia logo on the lid and some information about the specific model on the back. We have the international version of the smartphone, but we do believe that all markets get one and the same set of accessories with it. Actually, there's quite a generous bundle for you inside the box. The device is located in the top level compartment. Below it you will see a fast charger with an output power of 5V/3A; 9V/2A; or 12V/1.5A, a USB to Type-C cable, and a USB 2.0 to Type-C converter. To make things even sweeter, nubia has thrown in a pair of Nubian rhythm tone Pro Headphones with the brand's colors (black and red), placed in a round plastic box. Of course, there are also a SIM tray pin, a warranty card and user manual, all neatly packaged in an envelope.

Design, build and controls

nubia Z11 is all you've imagined it to be - elegant and meticulously crafted with attention to detail. In this smartphone each design element has its purpose and distinctive feature or placement, and by combining them all you get a piece of solid smartphone art. The model's body is made of a 6000 series aluminum alloy. In this series, aluminum is alloyed with magnesium and silicon. The end result is a material that is easy to mould, weld and can be hardened by precipitation. A custom CNC (computer numeric cutting) arc process has been employed to achieve a refined metal body that is light, yet sturdy, with gentle curves and delicate matte surface. At the same time, one of nubia Z11's centerpoints is it bezelless display. The company has employed a special aRC 2.0 technology to create an infinite visual experience. We will get back in detail to this in the Display section of this review. The more important fact here is that the screen glass and the body are protected by a buffering layer under the frame, which provides additional toughness for the device. According to nubia, you don't have to fear dropping your Z11 as this structure should make it rock-solid. The front and rear edges are thin, chamfered and glossy - corresponding to the glossy lining of the antenna caps and the fingerprint sensor's ring. That makes a stark contrast with the matte surface of the body. Due to its bezelless display design, the smartphone is not very wide. With a width of 72.3 mm it is actually one of the most narrow 5.5-inch smartphones on the market. Its height of 151.8 mm also means that nubia Z11 is a very compact smartphone, which provides a holding experience of a 5-inch device. You get a better grip, comfort and hand control. In addition, the model is one of the thinnest and lightest (7.7 mm/162 grams) among handsets with a 5.5-inch display and a 3000+ mAh battery. Available colors include gold, rose-gold with a black front, silver with a white front and gray with a black front. We are reviewing a silver unit with the international version of the software. nubia Z11 is an excellently build device and this applies not only to looks and feel, but also when you start working it. All pressure-sensitive buttons and ports provide a perfect fit. The volume and power buttons are all metal, finely crafted and subtly protruding. They are located on the right hand side of the smartphone, while on the left hand one is the hybrid, dual-SIM card tray (nano-SIM + nano-SIM/microSD). On the top frame are positioned a 3.5 mm jack, a microphone hole and an infrared emitter. On the bottom frame you'll find the centrally positioned USB Type-C port with two speaker grilles on its sides. Only the right one houses a speaker. On the front, above the display, you'll see the selfie camera, earpiece and light/proximity sensor, while below it is the capacitive navigation bar that includes a round circle serving as a navigation button and notification light. The two dots on its sides are for the menu and back buttons. Their places can be switched from the Settings menu. On the back, in the top left corner the LED flash and rear camera module are located. Below them is the round fingerprint sensor, but centrally positioned. Towards the lower end of the handset is the nubia logo. The camera module has a metal ring in the company's signature red color.

Display

nubia Z11 has a bezelless, 5.5-inch display by JDI with an IPS panel that covers 96% of the NTSC colors space and has an FHD resolution (1080 x 1920) with a pixel density of 403 ppi. Its peak brightness is 500 cd/m². The screen is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with a 2.5D curved top glass layer. In order to achieve the bezelless design of the display, nubia has employed a traditional screen structure coupled with a refractive top glass layer. At the base is the backlight layer, followed by a polarizer, TFT glass, CF (color filter) glass, another polarizing layer, the touch panel and the 2.5D curved color glass. The actual border is not seen as it reaches only to the TFT glass layer, while the curved top glass provides visibility down to the first polarizing layer at an angle, thus making the border invisible. This is what nubia calls aRC 2.0 refractive glass technology. It makes the display unit lighter and thinner than general, which ultimately leads to a lighter and thinner overall handset. It also helps the device to have a staggering 81% screen-to-body ratio. The screen employs yet another advanced technology. Dubbed FiT 2.0, it enables users to navigate through the smartphone by using interactive edge gestures. This function has to be enabled from the Settings menu as it is switched off by default and will be described in detail in the OS, UI and software section of this review. There are also additional options that help you adjust the screen to your liking, including color temperature and saturation settings. With a peak brightness of 532.558 cd/sq.m. our review unit complies with what is set as an official specification. The black luminance is typical for the type of display and the unit actually has a very good static contrast ratio of around 1240:1. It is almost the same at all brightness levels as the black luminance values decrease nearly proportionally with the white ones. The temperature of the white point has an average of 8000K, which means that the screen colors look colder than average. The fact that the display panel supports a wider color gamut (96% of the NTSC one as per the specifications) is seen from the CIE diagram. The blue range experiences slight deviations, but the red, and especially the green areas show higher deviation from the sRGB color space. The IPS panel of the screen has a classic stripe pixel structure and provides excellent viewing angles with only a slight loss in brightness, when the display is viewed from aside.

OS, UI and software

nubia Z11 runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with nubia 4.0 on top. This is a deeply customized user interface that should enrich the user experience with various functions and features, and should also make one-handed operation with the device easier. You have a lock screen that should be swiped up by default in order to unlock the device and a camera app shortcut on it. You can choose from the Settings whether notifications should appear on it or not. The home screen has a docked row of apps and serves as the main access point to all apps installed on the device as they appear on screens successive to the home one. One major benefit of the UI is the Split Screen function. All you have to do is swipe up the display, in whichever application you are, and you'll enter this mode. It allows you to multitask more effectively by actually having two desktops, both with access to all apps. Thus you can watch video in one screen and browse the web or write a message on the other, for example. The split screen feature can duplicate the same software in different screens including instant message applications like QQ and Wechat, so you can log in to multiple accounts at once. The Widgets menu is customized, too. It can be accessed either by tapping on the left button from the navigation bar or by long pressing on an empty space on the home screen. It includes a Settings icon that is a shortcut to the Settings menu, Wallpaper, Widgets and Arrange icons function. When activated, the latter allows you to move one or more icons from one screen to another. The Notifications menu also looks different. By swiping once from the top of the display you get four icons to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Mobile data and Location, the brightness level setting, and the list with notifications. You need to swipe again to get the full list of Quick Settings. When there are no notifications a single swipe is enough to access the Quick Settings. You can re-design the way they appear from the corresponding menu in the main Settings. The Volume menu is changed and shows different options depending on the apps you're in. If you're in the Music app, you'll get the media volume setting after pressing the Volume button. If you're somewhere in the Settings or the desktops, the Volume button will open the System volume. Pressing and holding the power button opens the Power off menu. Besides looking different, it only contains shortcuts to power off and reboot, no airplane mode and screenshot functions here. Pressing and holding the back button opens the list of recent apps, while pressing and holding the home button opens the Ok, Google voice search.
The Settings menu is overhauled in appearance and structure, and includes new functions provided only by nubia 4.0. The major sets of options appear on a screen and a half. The first set includes the connectivity options, including Wi-Fi with advanced options, Bluetooth, SIM card, and other wireless options such as NFC. You also can choose from two WLAN antenna modes - single and dual antenna. The Display set of options allows you choose a wallpaper - for the lock screen, home screen, or one and the same for both. You can also choose from two desktop layouts - 4x5 and 5x5. Of course, you can manage the brightness level but also the color saturation and color temperature. From this section, you can manage the behaviour of the breathing light, too. The Notification Center lets you change the layout of the Quick Settings menu, show/hide the net speed data, show/hide notification icons, show/hide notifications on the lock screen. Though looking different, the Sound settings are very standard. There are no pre-set sound profiles and under this section you can access the Dolby Sound settings. This enhancement is switched on by default.
The Edge gestures is an interesting feature of nubia Z11's software. You can switch on and off 5 different combinations of touching and sliding on one or two edges of the screen. For example, you can increase/decrease the screen brightness by sliding with your fingers down and up along the two vertical edges; holding the edge and sliding inward lets you choose between desktops; double clicking one edge leads you backwards; and so on. Under Features you can activate and deactivate the Split Screen function, manage the phone's behaviour if you'll be using a smart cover as well as switch the places of the menu and back buttons from the navigation bar. You can also switch on and off various touch gestures and smart sensor functions - for example, you can lock the screen simply by waving your palm over it, you can also flip the device to mute it, etc. Dual Instance is a feature, which lets you login simultaneously with two different IDs in one and the same app. And finally, under Features you can manage the Super Screenshot function. Fingerprint identification is a whole separate set of options. You can set up to 5 fingerprint IDs and set them to lock and open various apps. You can also use the fingerprint sensor as a camera shutter for taking photos, for opening the Super Screenshot function, for unlocking the device or simply waking up the screen. The Security settings are placed in the following section and have the standard options.
The Other system settings is where you'll find Location, Language and input (with TouchPal keyboard), Date & time, Battery, Memory, Storage, Other accounts, Backup and reset, Accessibility. The Location section has several flexible features, which let you benefit from this function, yet manage your battery life smarter. The rest of the options are standard, including the Accessibility one. It has been enriched with a toggle for making a screenshot by pressing the volume and power button, magnetic sensor calibration, Schedule power on & off and a toggle for Reducing the dynamic effect of the UI. During our test period we have not been able to check for updates as the device couldn't establish a connection with the corresponding servers.
In nubia 4.0 there is no app tray. All apps are listed in successive screens accessible directly from the home one by swiping. The device is free of app clutter though you do get some pre-installed functions. All Google apps are placed in one folder, containing OK, Google voice search, Chrome, Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Drive, PlayMusic, Hangouts, and Photos. There's a second folder named Tools, which contains a Sound recorder, Backup, Calculator, Flashlight, System update, and Edge gestures. The latter equals the one present in the Settings menu. You get the standard apps like Dialer, Contacts, Messenger (with very expanded settings), Calendar, default Browser, Email, Gallery, Music, Camera, Video and Voice search. There's a Screen projection app as well. It equals the cast screen/wireless display function and lets you transfer content from the smartphone to a desktop monitor TV as well as receive content from another device.
TimeManager stands for the Clock app and has actually divided its functions in four three sub-interfaces for world clock, alarms, stopwatch, and timer. Actually, there are some apps that double several functions of the device. For example, among the list of apps you'll see one that's named Lock Screen, which does just that and you can use it instead of the power button for instant locking. There's also an Accelerate icon and when you press it, it accelerates the device - this means that it closes all background running apps and frees RAM. The model's User Manual is placed as an app as well. Under NotePad you'll get a tool for making notes. Under MyLife you get a file manager. The Super Screenshot is also placed as an app here. It lets you make a screenshot of a whole webpage for example or make a recording of your interaction with the screen (you can also choose the type of video quality). Once you decide on the type of screenshot you can choose its form and additional effect. The TouchPal keyboard is also positioned as a separate app in this list, though it is also accessible from the Language and input menu under Settings > Other system settings.

Networks, calls and connectivity

nubia Z11 is an actual connectivity hub. Due to its advanced chipset and more specifically - the integrated X12 LTE modem with a three-carrier aggregation, the smartphone supports LTE Cat. 12 download speeds of up to 600 Mbps, Cat. 13 uplink speeds of up to 150 Mbps, VoLTE and LTE-U (the ability to use simultaneously at least two LTE connections). In terms of specific network bands the model has two variants. The Asia/Europe one is coded NX531J_V2B and supports CDMA BC0 (800 MHz), 2G GSM B2/3/5/8 (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), 3G UMTS B1/2/5/8 (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz), and 4G FDD-LTE B1/3/5/7/8/20 plus TDD-LTE B40. The Americas variant (still under testing) is named NX531J_V2A and supports 2G GSM B2/3/5/8, 3G B2/4/5/8, and 4G LTE B1/2/3/4/5/7/12/17/28. In addition, the device uses Qualcomm's TruSignal Antenna Boost - this is a dual-antenna signal enhancement technology, which improves data transfer speed by 40% and call quality by 30%. Indeed, call quality, reception and signal have been excellent at all times even without the dual antenna boost turned on. nubia Z11 also provides extended Wi-Fi connectivity options and performs perfectly even in areas, where Wi-Fi signals are usually low and other devices struggle to establish a connection. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, 802.11n @ 5GHz, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, and Bluetooth 4.1 with BLE. There are settings for a WPS button as well. Equipped with a USB Type-C 2.0 port it provides OTG support as well. High-end Qualcomm-based devices do support NFC and the nubia Z11 is no exception. All of these functions work impeccably. In terms of satellite navigation, the model works with GPS/A-GPS, Glonass, BeiDou. It managed to detect the satellites easily and with excellent accuracy.

Performance

nubia Z11 is equipped with the best chipset for mobile devices in the market. Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 MSM8996 is 64-bit system-on-chip built after the 14nm process. Its architecture is based on four custom Kryo CPU cores, two of which are clocked at 2.15GHz and the other two - at 1.6GHz. An Adreno 530 GPU clocked at 624MHz handles the graphics. We have already reviewed four other devices based on this SoC and we can make some basic comparisons in terms of benchmark results. According to its AnTuTu score of 131119 nubia Z11 is almost on par with ZTE Axon (130536), slightly outperforming it, and yields only to OnePlus 3 (144140) and LeEco Le Max 2 (137549). It is actually the UX sub-score in AnTuTu, that leads to a slightly lower result of the nubia Z11. In all the rest, it is as good as the top devices. According to Basemark X, however, nubia Z11 tops all of the above mentioned smartphones. Its PCMark Work performance score of 6786 is very high and yields only to LeEco Le Max 2's one - 6918. Actually, the device simply flies and handles graphics very well. Playing games will be a sheer pleasure, especially if you throw in the fact that you'll watch them on a bezelless display.
We are reviewing an international standard version of nubia Z11 with 4GB of single-channel, LPDDR3 RAM clocked at 800MHz and 64GB of eMMC 4.5 internal memory clocked at 200MHz that can be expanded up to 128GB. The domestic (Chinese) model has two variants - 4 or 6GB of dual-channel, LPDDR4 RAM clocked at 1866MHz and 64 or 128GB of eMMC5.1 storage that can be expanded up to 200GB. 4GB of RAM are more than enough to allow a handful of apps to remain running in the background without even noticing them. The storage can be expanded up to 128GB (international version) or 200GB (Chinese version), if you're willing to give up the second nano-SIM card slot and use it with a microSD card. There's quite a bunch of sensors on board the smartphone, including a proximity, light, Hall and fingerprint sensor, accelerometer, compass, gyroscope, etc. The fingerprint sensor can unlock the device in 0.1 seconds and can be used for taking photos when the camera app is open. It may also be used for authorizing mobile payments, designed to open a specific app and also launch the Super Screenshot function. The sensor works in a flash - probably one of the fastest ones we've seen as unlocking speed cannot be simply detected.

Cameras

The camera department of nubia Z11 is serviced by a special software suite called NeoVision 6.0. It features a DTI (Deep Trench Isolation) pixel isolation technology, LTM local color technology and 3D noise reduction technology, allowing users to capture sharp photographs with accurate colors even under low light conditions. The Anti-shake image stabilization technology is there for taking photographs with long exposures without the use of a tripod. Finally, there's a Real-time filter technology for special effects when using both cameras either for taking photos, making videos or video calls. The camera app has a special function that levels the photo in two directions, 9 pre-set filters, several toggles (for HDR, grid, shutter sound, etc.) and additional settings such as the video quality of the rear and front camera. The PRO mode allows you to adjust the shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and focus mode (macro, portrait, large objects, panorama). Of course there are time-laps, slo-mo, video and pano modes.

Primary camera

nubia Z11 sports a real flagship camera sensor for its primary shooter. It utilizes a 16-megapixel Sony IMX298 Exmor RS backside-illuminated image sensor with a 1/2.8" size. It is aided by a dual-LED flash, optical image stabilization (OIS), electronic image stabilization (EIS), and phase-detection autofocus. Quality photos are not possible without quality optics. nubia has opted for a 6-element, high-transparency organic glass lens with motor drive and an f/2.0 aperture. It is coupled with a blue filter glass and has a sapphire crystal glass cover for protection. The output images are with a resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels. The shooter can make 4K videos and FHD videos @ 60fps. Other smartphones, which we have reviewed and that have the same sensor are the OnePlus 3 and Xiaomi Mi 5.

Secondary camera

The selfie camera on the front of the device is equipped with an 8-megapixel backside-illuminated image sensor with a 1.4μm pixel size. We think this is the Sony IMX179 Exmor R with a 1/3.2" size. It is combined with a 5-element, 80° wide-angle lens with an f/2.4 aperture and blue filter glass. For improving the selfies it uses the Super Powerful Skin Retouching 2.0 beautification software. The beauty mode can be switched on even in real-time video conversations. The images from the front camera are with a resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels and the videos are FHD @ 30fps. The front camera of nubia Z11 is one of the best we've seen. Actually, the whole camera department is impressive.

Audio

nubia Z11 will also cater to the needs of audiophiles. The manufacturer has provided an advanced audio setup (compared to the one of an average smartphone), that includes a built-in Asahi Kasei AK4376 audio chip coupled with HiFi + sound, Dolby Atmos technology, and SmartPA loudspeakers using an advanced technology. The manufacturer has made its own music app and has integrated in it the Dolby Atmos sound enhancement, though it is also available as a separate setting in the Sound options. There are various profiles of audio enhancements such as movie, music, and so on. When you choose one profile to be active you may also switch on additional effects for it.
For the audio measurements of all devices we use the RightMark Audio Analyzer software and the TASCAM US-2x2 audio interface. nubia Z11 does provide better sound than an average smartphone - both in terms of results from the test and in terms of the sound coming out from the speaker. The test showed excellent results for the frequency response and IMD + Noise, while the THD + Noise is rated as good (usually standard devices score average on this). The rest of the parameters are assessed as very good and the overall result is the same. Regarding the speaker, even without the Dolby Atmos on, even for a single one, it sounds better than average devices and this can be detected without a trained ear, too.

Battery

nubia Z11 relies on a 3000 mAh Li-Pol battery for up to 2.17 days of battery life under normal use. It is combined with Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 tech that provides a 27% increase in charging speed and 45% increase in energy efficiency over older generations of the technology. The dual-core charger provides four times faster charging times, voltage stability, low battery heating. At the same time the USB Type-C port is compatible with most chargers in the market, so you won't have any issues supplying a new cable or charger, if needed. nubia has created an in-house battery life management system called NeoPower 2.0. It includes system upgrades to photography components, optimized nubia UI, and better-performing power-saving algorithms along with intelligent backlighting sensors and temperature regulating technologies for optimized power consumption. These are toggles grouped under the Battery > Power Saving Control options that include CPU Powersaver, Screen Powersaver, Turn off network connection, Turn off Vibrate on Touch. There's a battery monitor as well along with a Schedule power on and off function.
It looks like nubia has done a great job in optimizing battery life as the PCMark Work battery life test showed an excellent result of 8 hours and 4 minutes. Of course, the test has been performed with the screen brightness calibrated at 200 nits as per Futuremark's recommendations. The fast charger managed to charge the battery from 0% to 50% in 36 minutes and another 19 minutes were needed to reach 70%. The other 30% of the full capacity of the battery needed 1 hour and 5 minutes to charge. The whole charging time from 0% to 100% was 2 hours.

Final thoughts

nubia Z11 is a real flagship smartphone with a bezelless screen, powerful chipset, a plethora of connectivity options, great battery life, very good audio department and probably one of the best camera set-ups in the market today. All this is put together in a beautifully designed metal body managed by a well-thought out and intuitive in-house UI. The device can easily become your stylish daily assistant, equally suitable for business, entertainment, and socializing. It has a very good features/price ratio and will definitely have the wow effect for many. Bravo!
