Zopo Speed 8 Review

24 Май 2016, 09:54:41

Zopo Speed 8 ReviewZopo is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer founded in 2012. The company's name is an acronym for "Zealous Open Perfect Outstanding". The brand is known in homeland China mainly, but with the years and several innovative products, it managed to establish businesses in France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, India, Malaysia, Hong Kong and other markets. The latest Zopo smartphone, which will hit the market any moment soon, is the Zopo Speed 8. Its main selling point is the high-end MediaTek Helio X20 chipset, which promises to score high in benchmarks and turn the device in a performance powerhouse. However, smartphones are not only about high-speed CPUs, so let's put the model to the test and see what it has to offer.

Specifications

Zopo Speed 8 (ZP955) features a 5.5-inch IPS display with full lamination (GFF) and an FHD resolution (1080 x 1920). It graces a rectangular body with gently sloping top and bottom that merge into the rounded corners of the frame and a slightly curved plastic back. Its hardware is based on a MediaTek Helio X20 MT6797 SoC, which includes a deca-core CPU with 2x 2.5GHz Cortex-A72 cores, 4x 2GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and 4x 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores. A powerful four-core 700MHz ARM Mali-T880 MP4 GPU takes care of the graphics. The chipset is aided by 4GB of double-channel, 933MHz LPDDR3 RAM. The on-board memory measures 32GB. No option for memory expansion. The camera department of the model includes very good sensors. The primary shooter is equipped with a 21-megapixel Sony IMX230 Exmor RS, stacked CMOS sensor, which works together with a 6-element lens, an f/2.2 aperture, dual-LED flash, and phase-detection auto-focus. On the front sits an OmniVision PureCel camera with an 8-megapixel OV8856 sensor, an LED flash, and a 4-element lens with an f/2.8 aperture. The device supports quad-band 2G GSM, quad-band 3G WCDMA, quad-band 4G FDD-LTE, and quad-band 4G TDD-LTE Cat. 4 networks. There is a dual-SIM card tray on board with two nano-SIM card slots. The rest of the model's connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-Fi Hotspot, and Bluetooth 4.1. It is equipped with a USB Type-C port and a Type-C to microUSB cable with OTG support. In terms of navigation, the Zopo Speed 8 can be used with all three major satellite navigation systems - GPS/A-GPS, Glonass, BeiDou. Moreover, the model supports both Qualcomm's NFC and MediaTek's HotKnot technology, which offer one and the same functionality. A 3600 mAh Li-Pol battery, which is non-removable, keeps the lights on. It is coupled with a fast charger and MediaTek's Pump Express Plus tech. Here are all features and specifications of the Zopo Speed 8.

What's in the box

Zopo Speed 8 is packed in a rectangular dark-grey box with a picture of the model's back and Zopo logo on top colored in sparkling blue. On the back is the standard information about the model. Inside are placed the smartphone itself, a fast charger, a USB Type-C to microUSB 2.0 cable, pin for the SIM tray, warranty card, and a booklet named Declaration of conformity.

Design and build

Perhaps the most noteworthy element of Zopo Speed 8's design are the two front-mounted speakers, which stylishly follow the curved outline of the device. One is placed on the front's top, above the screen, and the other is at the front bottom, below the screen. It also has gently sloping top and bottom sides, rounded corners and a slightly curved back for a firm grip. The body is plastic and if you've had experience with metal smartphones, this plastic look and feel makes impression. The back has a brushed metal-like surface made with a nano-injection molding process and a spray coating technology. The smartphone has a width of 76.35 mm and a height of 152.5 mm, which does not equal to 'compact', but is comfortable enough. The depth is 9.8 mm, and that is mainly because the camera module protrudes a bit too much on the back. There's a good reason for this, most probably, related to the size of the whole module. It looks good actually, but adds to the total depth of the smartphone. The device looks thinner than it is, also because the body is slightly curved to the sides. Zopo Speed 8 weighs 164 grams, which includes the built-in 3600 mAh battery. As long as it concerns the build, the device is well-made in general. The position of the front camera, front LED flash and LED notification light is a bit awkward and far from symmetrical, but most probably there has been an issue with positioning the hardware modules inside, which results in such a design of the frame above the screen. The power and volume buttons are also plastic, and their travel is a bit shallow. All the rest is of good quality, there are no flexing issues, the separate elements of the body fit into place, including the display. It is tightly rimmed and actually the profile of the whole display unit looks a lot like the profile of the back cover, which symmetrically meet with the silver-colored frame. A beautiful touch, indeed. As a whole the device is solid and good looking. The model is available in black (front and back) and silver with a white front. We are reviewing a black-colored unit.

Controls

Zopo Speed 8 has a classic set-up of the main controls of the device. However, the placement of some of the elements is a bit awkward. Above the screen on the front is the first speaker, below it are a LED flash, a LED notification light and the front-facing camera. The flash and LED light are positioned next to each other to the right of the center and the camera is several millimeters higher to the right. Below the screen there are no physical buttons. Only the second speaker is there. The home button, back button and menu/options button are on-screen. It looks like it's a waste of space as the frame below the display is quite generous and left empty, while at the same time on-screen buttons take up from the limited size of the display. On the back, centrally positioned at the top is the camera module with a dual-LED flash below it. A fingerprint sensor is placed below the flasher and beneath it is the Zopo logo. Another weird thing here is a small hole to the upper left of the camera. Probably this is the top noise-cancellation mic, which for some reason could not be fitted on the top side of the frame. This area is reserved for the 3.5 mm jack and nothing else. The bottom of the frame is where the USB Type-C port is. It is not centrally positioned, but to the right of the center, while the second noise-cancellation mic is to the left and more centrally placed. The dual nano-SIM card tray is on the left side of the device. Bear in mind that this is a SIM-card-only tray, with no option for storage expansion whatsoever. On the right hand side of the device are the single volume key and the power button below it.

Display

Zopo Speed 8 has a 5.5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. It incorporates the GFF full lamination technology. This "glass-to-film-to-film full lamination" means that it is made of a glass, followed by an optically clear adhesive (OCA), a sensory film, then again OCA, and then a second sensory film. This technology achieves thinner displays, which are also more cost efficient while providing good quality. At a first glance, the display makes an impression of being very bright. Indeed, the measurements show that it has a higher-than-average brightness with the white luminance value at 100% and 75% of brightness being 549.03 cd/m2 and 434.29 cd/m2. The black luminance value decreases almost proportionally with the decrease of the white luminance value, hence the static contrast ratio remains relatively the same at around 950:1. The temperature of the white point is within the 11157-11651K, which is like 3000-4000K higher than average for a smartphone display. In result, the colors are colder. However, like every MediaTek-based device that runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the Zopo Speed 8 has the MiraVision tech on board, which is a powerful tool for adjusting the display's properties to your preferences. This will be explored in more detail in the next section of the review.
Brightness White luminance Black luminance Contrast Color temperature
100 % 549.03 cd/m2 0.580 cd/m2 947 : 1 11651 K
75 % 434.29 cd/m2 0.456 cd/m2 952 : 1 11461 K

OS, UI and software

Zopo Speed 8 has a stock Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The lock screen has shortcuts to the camera app and to the Google Now, instead to the Dialer. The home screen has a dock of two rows of fixed apps and a Google Now voice search on top. The first row of apps includes Gmail, Photos, Settings and PlayStore. This row can be swiped to a second screen, which contains Maps, Play Music, YouTube, Hangouts. If you install other apps, they will appear in a third, fourth and so on page to swipe to. These apps can be grouped into folders. The second row includes the Dialer, Contacts, app drawer, Chrome, and Camera. To access the Notifications, just swipe downwards from the top of the screen. A second swipe after this will bring up the Quick Settings, which include access to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DND and Aeroplane mode, Auto-rotate, Torch, Location, Cast, Data Connection, HotKnot, and Audio Profiles. The Audio Profile and the Do Not Disturb mode have functions that mix with each other sometimes, so one of those is unnecessary to be here. When the Quick Settings is active, you can long press the icon for the main Settings menu. It will show the System UI Tuner after the About Phone menu in the Settings menu. With it you can fine tune various tools to suite best your preferences for interacting with the smartphone. For example, you can customize the shortcuts that appear in the Quick Settings, add a battery percentage figure next to the battery indicator, change which icons appear on the status bar and so on. To bring up the Task Manager, you have to long-press the rectangular (right) button of the on-screen ones. A long-press on the home button will open Google Now on Tap. This function collects information from from any content displayed on your phone at any time (when active) and provides information that is relevant to the one you're viewing at the moment based on keywords that are present on the screen. A press on the empty space on the home screen opens the Wallpapers and Widgets menu.
If you have already used a Marshmallow-based device, the Settings layout will not hold any surprises for you. It starts with the Wireless & networks section, where you can manage Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Turbo Download for files larger than 20MB, NFC, HotKnot, etc. Under Device you can manage the Display, Sound & notification, Apps, Storage & USB, Users, Memory, Gesture Sensing and Smart Wake. Under Display you have all the standard set of options, including ClearMotion - video fluency enhancer; MiraVision - for adjusting the dynamic contrast, color temperature, BluLight Defender, color saturation, sharpness and so on; Daydream, which functions as a screen saver, while the device is idle, and Cast screen - for wireless casting of the content from the smartphone to a larger display like a monitor or TV. The Sound & notification section is the classic one as well with four pre-set audio modes, notifications and DND management, sound enhancement. The Apps and Memory management has been improved in Marshmallow and provides more flexibility and control over the app behaviour and freeing more RAM. You also get the whole set of options for interaction with the smartphone by using gestures and Smart Wake. The Security section in Android 6.0 is very extensive. In Zopo Speed 8 it is preserved as a structure and among all includes the Fingerprint management, Phone encryption, Screen pinning, etc. The Google settings app now has its own place on the Settings menu and unlike in other Marshmallow devices we've tested, Zopo did not remove it from Speed 8's options. It gathers in one place the management of your Google accounts, including a Set up nearby device functions, with which you can wirelessly (over Bluetooth of Wi-Fi) transfer your accounts, list of apps and preferences to another device. The rest of the settings, including the Location services, Language & input, Backup & reset, Date & time, Scheduled power on & off, Accessibility and About Phone are already familiar.
The app drawer from the home screen opens a list of apps, which appears on a single page that can be scrolled down, instead on several screens, which can be swiped back and forth. The scroll provides a convenient alphabetical search - according to the first letter of the app's name, for quick access to the pre-installed apps. On top of the list is the Search apps.. functionality. Below it are the four most recently and most often used apps for quick access. After that appear the rest of the apps, listed in alphabetic order below this. With the exception of an icon, which leads directly to Zopo's website, when pressed, there are no other apps, besides the default ones, which arrive with the OS. You get a classic Dialer, Contacts, Messenger, Email, Clock, Calendar, Gallery, Calculator, Radio, Sound Recorder. For listening to music, reading the news, taking notes, storing information and using email, you can use the pre-installed Google apps, or of course find and download an alternative app that suites you better.

Networks, calls and connectivity

Zopo Speed 8 packs a dual-SIM tray that can hold two nano-SIM cards. They support a wide range of network bands, including quad-band 2G GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), tri-band 3G WCDMA (900, 1900, 2100 MHz), quad-band 4G FDD-LTE (800, 1800, 2100, 2600 MHz), and tri-band 4G TDD-LTE (1900, 2300, 2600 MHz) networks. The LTE is with Cat. 4 speeds of upload (50 Mbps) and download (150 Mbps). The smartphone has a USB Type-C port and a cable, which is a Type-C to microUSB 2.0 one. It supports USB On-the-Go, which is tested and works. Some of the more interesting connectivity options are the Turbo Download, which is already a classic for Marshmallow devices, and the support of both NFC and HotKnot, which are identical services, but the first is a Qualcomm tech, while the second is a MediaTek one. Zopo Speed 8 also supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-Fi Hotspot, and Bluetooth 4.1. During our testing period the device showed very weak Wi-Fi reception. It managed to connect only when placed directly to the routes. If placed a few steps away or in another room, it did not connect at all. Moreover, we were not able to test the GPS/A-GPS, Glonass and BeiDou reception as the device did not detect any satellites whatsoever. We did try several ways for this to happen, but without success. We assume that this connectivity problem with the Wi-Fi and satellite navigation is a hardware one. However, it should be taken into consideration that this is a pre-production test unit and for the mass market devices it is not expected to experience such issues.

Performance

Zopo Speed 8 is equipped with one of the top MediaTek chipsets at the moment - Helio X20 MT6797 SoC. This is the first deca-core chipset for mobile devices, which features a tri-cluster design, meaning the cores are grouped in three clusters, each with a different clock speed. In this case there are two 2.5GHz Cortex-A72 cores, four 2GHz Cortex-A53 cores, and four 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores. Graphics processing power relies on a four-core 700MHz Mali-T880 MP4 GPU takes care of the graphics. With such a hardware setup, it is expected of the Zopo Speed 8 to score high in performance and the smartphone does not disappoint in that. With a result of 92 644 AnTuTu lists it as the eighth most powerful device from all listed with it. According to Geekbench's result Speed 8 is within the top five devices at the moment. However, while running the benchmark tests, we have noticed that the smartphone becomes very hot in the upper area around the camera. Over time, this could lead to decrease in performance. In addition, the device is equipped with 4GB of double-channel, 933MHz LPDDR3 RAM, which makes multitasking fluent, indeed. The built-in memory is 32GB and curiously enough Zopo do not provide storage expansion in this model. Reading and writing from and to the memory is swift, but slower, for example, from the Gionee S8. Finally, the list of on-board sensors includes a proximity, light, orientation, gravity, linear acceleration, fingerprint sensor along with an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer. The fingerprint one works fine.

Cameras

The primary shooter of the Zopo Speed 8 is equipped with a 21-megapixel Sony IMX230 Exmor RS, stacked CMOS sensor with a size of 1/2.45" (5.985 x 4.498 mm). It works together with a 6-elements lens with an f/2.2 aperture and is aided by a dual-LED flash and phase-detection auto focus. The camera is capable of making 4K videos. We did manage to record such a video and its quality was very impressive, but very often we experienced problems playing the video fluently. Another issue with the primary camera is that has difficulty focusing. Once it manages to focus, it makes excellent photos, but focusing is a software issue, that can be addressed with a future update. Very often, the smartphone struggles correcting the exposure and the photos become overexposed. Again, this could be fixed with a firmware update. The front-facing shooter is an OmniVision PureCel one that packs an 8-megapixel OV8856 sensor with a size of 3.6783 x 2.76768 mm. It is coupled with a 4-element lens with an f/2.8 aperture and is aided by an LED flash. This camera makes good photos and will easily become your favourite for selfies. It can also shoot 640 x 480 video @ 30fps.

Secondary camera

As seen from the Camera app screenshots the software is pretty standard and allows you to correct the shooting mode, Face detection, Exposure, White balance, ISO, HDR, etc.

Audio

The audio equipment of the Zopo Speed 8 includes an earpiece and dual front-mounted speakers. We tested the device with the RightMark Audio Analyzer software and the TASCAM US-2x2 audio interface. The test showed a Good overall result. It excels in frequency response, but the THD + Noise, dB (A) is accessed as Average, and the THD along with the IMD at 10 kHz are only Good.

Battery

Zopo Speed 8 is powered by a 3600 mAh Li-Pol, non-removable battery. According to the specifications, it should provide 12 hours of talk time and 250 hours of standby time in 2G and 3G networks. It is coupled with a 5V;9V/2A 12V/1.5A fast charger. The battery works with MediaTek's Pump Express Plus tech, which corresponds to Qualcomm's Quick Charge tech, and boosts charging speed. When we charged the battery from 0% to 100%, it needed 1 hour and 44 minutes to get fully charged. It charged at 6.8V. At the beginning the amperage is 1.48-1.7A and gradually decreases. Being a Marshmallow device, the Speed 8 has an integrated Doze mode. The PCMark Battery test showed a work battery life of 5 hours and 59 minutes. The test has been performed with the brightness level calibrated at 200 cd/m2 as per Fututuremark's recommendations.

Final thoughts

Zopo Speed 8 has a very bright screen, a good camera department and a truly powerful chipset. The model has the potential of becoming a best seller, if it corrects its hardware issues with the Wi-Fi and GPS, which we encountered in the pre-production unit we tested, and receives a software update for tackling software-dependent problems.
