OS, UI and software

At the moment of this review, Xiaomi Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite are the latest additions to the Android One program and include the latest AI-powered innovations and security features from Google. Moreover, Android One versions are pure vanilla variants of the corresponding Android OS - in this case - Android 8 Oreo. Hence, when it comes to usability there won't be any issues at all. As long as it concerns the UI, everything looks and works as in stock Android Oreo. The Lock Screen displays the usual time, date, Voice and Camera app shortcuts. By default, the notifications are displayed on it. A simple swipe up from the bottom of the screen unlocks the device and you get access to the Home Screen on which several elements are positioned: Google search bar, Google apps folder, Xiaomi apps folder, Photos, Play Store and a docked row of apps. When you swipe up, you open the list of all apps placed in alphabetic order on screen with an app search bar on top. A swipe right from the Home Screen opens Google App. Desktop Shortcuts are enabled and the Volume and Power off shades are in their stock design variant as well.
The Task Manager tiles the apps vertically and supports split-screen mode. There's one inconvenient feature - the Clear All button is placed above the first app you've ever open, so if you have opened plenty of apps and you want to close them all, you have to swipe them all down to reach the first one and get access to the Clear All button. The Widgets menu is the standard Android Oreo one. It contains a choice of wallpapers and widgets and provides basic Home Screen settings such as switching on/off the Google App, adding icons to the Home Screen, notification dots and Home Screen rotation. The Notification cards employ the default Android 8 design. They support notification snoozing, in-card management and channels. The Quick Settings offer no surprises either. The brightness level bar is on top the toggles, which are listed six per page and are followed by the date and shortcuts to the toggles list and system settings.
Xiaomi Mi A2 arrives with all the usual Google apps on board, which include Calendar, Chrome, Drive, Duo, Gmail, Google App, Maps, Photos, Play Music, Play Store, YouTube. There are two additional apps created especially for users who prefer to communicate in Indian and Chinese: the Indic Keyboard and the Pinyin Input, both of which can be enabled in the Language settings. The default Android apps include Calculator, Clock, Contacts, Files (Downloads), Messages, Phone. All of them are in their stock Android appearance and functionality. The Keep app, which is basically a notes application, is present here as well and we think it will become a tradition to have it in future devices. Xiaomi has included four of its own applications. The first one is the Files Manager which inherits some functionalities and design features from MIUI in terms of grouping files, folder icons, storage cleaning feature, etc. The second Mi app is the Feedback one - it gives you direct access to Xiaomi's support. There's also the Mi Drop app which allows you to transfer quickly and easily the data from one phone to another. Finally, the Mi Remote app, which uses the IR emitter to turn the handset in a convenient remote control for household appliances, TV sets, TV boxes, etc.
The Settings menu is very simple and straightforward and arrives in its default Android Oreo variant. After the usual list of suggestions, the settings begin with the Network & Internet group followed by the Connected Devices group of options. Both allow you to manage various types of connections of your device - Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, for example, as well as manage your data usage, SIM cards, mobile networks, etc. The third group of settings manages your applications and the notifications behaviour including the notification dots and channels. The Battery settings follow but these will be discussed in the Battery section of this review. The fifth group includes the Display options - brightness level, Night Light, adaptive brightness, adaptive display, wallpapers, screen saver, font and display size, etc. The Sound settings are in their standard set including the three main volume bars, DND mode, headphone and audio effects (inherited from Xiaomi's MIUI), default and additional sounds and vibrations, emergency alerts. The seventh group is the Storage that includes a toggle for a storage manager (off by default) and a file cleaner.
The Security & Location options are collected in the next group - eighth in line. Here you will find the three obligatory for Android Oreo features - Google Play Protect, Find My Device, and Security Update. They are followed by the usual screen lock management, lock screen settings, fingerprint and smart lock options. The list continues with privacy settings, phone encryption options, screen pinning, apps with usage access, etc. The ninth group of settings manages the Users and Accounts and is followed by the Accessibility options, which are quite extensive - screen readers, display, interaction controls, audio and on-screen text features. Mi Services is not a default Android feature but are typical for Xiaomi devices and an integral part of MIUI. This menu includes two toggles that are turned off by default. The first is for participation in the user experience program and the second is about sending diagnostic data automatically. The last two groups of settings are the Google and System ones. The latter includes Language & Input options with Google's Autofill service on, Date & time, Backup, Reset, System update, About phone and Gestures. The gestures menu has only one feature that's turned on - jump to camera. This review is made on the latest possible software version available for Mi A2.
