Cubot P30 Review
You can buy a Cubot P30 at a promotional price from AliExpress.

OS, UI and software

The Cubot P30 runs on stock Android 9 Pie and even though the device and its OS are dated, we can confirm that it received an update dated from May 23rd this year. The Lock Screen has a classic layout with shortcuts to the Camera and Voice search at the bottom corners, time and date widget, etc. A swipe up unlocks the screen by default. The Home Screen appears with the Google Search bar on top, five favorite apps, and a row of four docked apps. Desktop shortcuts are supported. A touch-and-hold gesture on an empty space on the Home Screen brings up the menu with settings for the Home Screen, Widgets, and Wallpapers.

A swipe to the right opens the Google App with the latest news. A swipe to the left opens the second screen of apps but note these are only the apps you have installed in addition to the default ones. To access all applications listed in alphabetic order, you have to swipe up from the bottom of the Home Screen. This can be quite tricky because the same gesture but with a stop after the swipe opens the Task Manager. It might take a while to get the knack of it and not open the Task Manager when you need the list of apps.

The Task Manager lists the apps horizontally. You can clean them one by one and from the icon on top of the small screen, you can choose to either open the App Info screen or enter Split Screen mode. A swipe down from the top of the screen opens the list of Notifications which have a classic Android 9 Pie layout. A second swipe unfolds the Quick Settings, which are listed on two screens. The brightness level bar is placed above the Quick Settings icons.
Cubot P30 arrives with a standard set of Google and default Android apps. The first group includes Chrome, Calendar, Drive, Duo, Files, Gmail, Google App, Maps, Photos, Play Music, Play Store, Voice Search, YouTube. The default Android apps include Calculator, Camera, Clock, Contacts, FM Radio, Messenger, Phone, Sound Recorder. There's an ETSW warning app as well. The OTA update function and Face Unlock are listed as separate apps even though they are present as options in the Settings.
The Settings menu of the Cubot P30 is quite standard in terms of a choice of settings, appearance, and functionality. The list begins with a settings search bar followed by the "Network & Internet" settings which manage the Wi-Fi preferences, hotspot, tethering, Wi-Fi Direct, mobile data usage, SIM cards, VPN, etc. The second group manages the model's connections to other devices via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, USB connections, printing services. The third group of options allows you to manage the apps and notifications, including app permissions, default apps, special app access, notification dots, lock screen notifications, etc. It is followed by the Battery settings which are discussed in the corresponding part of this review.

The Display menu is fifth and allows you to manage the brightness level, display and font size, screen saver, switch on/off the adaptive brightness, wallpapers, screen sleep, and auto-rotate. This group also contains Night Light settings for more comfortable viewing in dark environments and the LED notification light options. You can choose the main theme of the device - dark, light, and automatic based on the wallpaper. The Sound group of settings is next and contains the standard set of options. The sound enhancement includes only the BesLoudness feature. The Storage menu provides options to free up space and enable the storage manager.
The Security & Location group of settings is eighth. It begins with the security status including Google Play Protect, Find My Device, and Security update. Then, it continues with the screen lock settings, Face Unlock, Lock Screen preferences, Fingerprint, Smart Lock settings, privacy, and data protection options. This menu is followed by the Accounts group of settings from where you can manage and sync all accounts you use on the device. The Accessibility menu comes next in its stock appearance and functionality. The Navigation bar settings are listed as a separate menu and allow you to hide the navbar and choose a navbar style. It is followed by the Digital Wellbeing menu with included parental controls. It is followed by the Google settings and the System menu. The latter is about setting the language, time, backing up and resetting the device, checking for updates, and checking the phone's data. It also includes the Gestures (jump to camera, swipe up on the home button, prevent ringing) and the Multiple Users menus. The About Phone sub-menu lists the usual legal information, SIM status, emergency information, build version, etc.
