Oukitel RT2 Review - reliability in every aspect
19 September 2022, 01:55:08
With the Oukitel RT2 the brand once again solidifies its leading position in the consumer market for ruggedized mobile devices. With a strong background in creating big-battery rugged smartphones, it is now launching a rugged tablet with a 20000 mAh battery. Designed to withstand most of the environmental challenges and offering 33W fast charging, reasonably fast performance, dual 4G LTE connectivity, and a big display, the RT2 can be a reliable outdoor tool for fun and work alike.
Specifications overview and what's in the box
The Oukitel RT2 has a 10.1-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, 350 nits of typical brightness, and Glove Mode support. The four bezels are very thick and the top one (when in a landscape position) houses the 16MP Samsung S5K3P3 selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture. There's another 16MP Samsung camera on the back but the main shooter uses an S5K2P7 sensor. It is aided by a single LED flash. Power is supplied by a 20000 mAh Li-Pol battery with 33W fast charging. Oukitel specified 900 hours of standby time. A MediaTek MT8788V chipset ticks under the hood paired with 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 128GB of eMMC 5.1 storage. The tablet is fitted with a hybrid tray with a Nano-SIM and a Nano-SIM/microSD slot. Oukitel RT2 is equipped with dual speakers and a USB Type-C 2.0 port with OTG support. It runs on Android 12 and supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Wi-Fi Direct, Cast Display, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS. The complete Oukitel RT2 specifications can be found here.
Oukitel RT2 is placed in a big white rectangular box with the brand name imprinted on the top and sides of the lid. The tablet arrives with a hand holder, which provides a more convenient grip. It is accompanied by accessories for attaching it to the back of the device - screws and a screwdriver. To sum up what's in the box:
- 33W charger
- USB-C cable
- SIM tray pin
- Hand holder with accessories
- Documentation
Design overview
The Oukitel RT2 has a traditional rugged design, including a metal chassis and a polycarbonate outer frame covered with TPU. The rear shell has a sculpted appearance with key areas having a rough texture to improve grip. The corners have additional cushioning and the polycarbonate case protrudes a millimeter or two from the surface of the display for additional protection. The display has a scratch-resistant glass of unspecified brand.
The tablet is quite a handful and that hand holder provided in the box can be useful. The device weighs a whole kilogram - 1007 grams to be exact. When measured including the cushioned corners, the tablet is 262 mm wide and 182 mm high (landscape orientation). The thickness is 18 mm.
The front is occupied by the 10.1-inch display with toughened glass and very thick bezels - 12 mm. The selfie camera is in the center of the top bezel with the LED notification light and the light sensor to its right. You can use the device in both landscape and portrait mode with the UI adjusting accordingly. The navigation can be either with virtual buttons or with on-screen gestures. On the back, there's a small camera module for the 16MP rear shooter with a single LED flash and a vent hole.
The two speakers are placed on the left and right frames (in landscape). The left frame also houses the hybrid dual SIM tray and the USB Type-C port both featuring protective caps for insulation. The right frame also houses the power and volume buttons. The top frame houses a microphone hole and the bottom one is bare.
Display
The Oukitel RT2 has a 10.1-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The manufacturer specifies 350 nits of typical brightness. The Display settings allow you to adjust the brightness level, switch on/off the Dark Theme, the Night Light, choose font size and display size, and the lock screen options. In addition, you can choose from three types of contrast and three types of color temperature.

Software and connectivity
Oukitel RT2 runs on stock Android 12. When we first started our review unit, it received an OTA update which loaded a UI that's designed especially for use on tablets when interacting with the default apps and the system settings. Auto-screen rotation is supported and you can use the tablet equally well in landscape and portrait mode. The Task Manager tiles the apps horizontally with options for entering split-screen and accessing app info. The Widgets menu offers a list of widgets, a choice of wallpapers, and two Home Screen settings - notification dots and Google Discover toggles. The Quick Settings and Notifications design is a classic Android 12 one. The RT2 arrives with a very basic set of apps pre-installed - Phone, Contacts, Messenger, Chrome, Calendar, YouTube, PlayStore, Duo, Assistant, Photos, Play Books, YT Kids, Clock, Sound Recorder, Calculator, FM Radio, Files, Flashlight, ToolBag, and Meet.
Performance
The Oukitel RT2 is based on a MediaTek MT8788V chipset ticks under the hood. Made after the 12nm process, it houses a 2GHz octa-core CPU with four 2GHz Cortex-A73 cores and four 2.0GHz Cortex-A53 cores. A Mali-G72 handles the graphics department. The SoC is paired with 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 128GB of eMMC 5.1 storage. The latter can be expanded. Of those 128GB, 114GB are available to the user. The results from the benchmark tests we ran on the device demonstrate the model's performance is on par with other mobile devices based on MediaTek's Helio A25 and Helio P60 chipsets.

Camera, photo samples
The camera department of the Oukitel RT2 is simple and comprises a 16MP Samsung S5K2P7 main shooter with an f/2.0 aperture and a 16MP Samsung S5K3P3 selfie snapper with an f/2.2 aperture. Here are some photo samples from the rear camera:Battery
The Oukitel RT2 is equipped with a 20000 mAh Li-Pol battery paired with an 11V/3A charger. All battery tests we run on the devices we review are developed by us and performed with the screen of the device being calibrated to 200 cd/m2. Battery-saving features are disabled.
With the provided USB cable and charger, our review unit charged in full for 3 hours and 32 minutes. The process develops steadily until the battery regains 80% of its charge. Afterward, it slows down and even more so after 90% is reached. The battery temperature follows this pattern closely. It starts at 27°C, jumps to 30° in a couple of minutes, and continues to increase gradually until it reaches 37°C. This moment coincides with the battery reaching 80% of its charge. After that, the temperature starts dropping, reaching 27°C in the end.
Our intensive browsing test showed that the battery drains completely in 25 hours and 58 minutes. The process is marked by a slow start and a slow end (around 30 minutes each). The battery temperature is at excellent levels at all times. It starts at 25°C and gradually increases to 28°C after 1 hour and 30 minutes from the start. It remains at this level until the end.
1920x1080, 30 fps, H.264, 20Mbps bitrate
The video test for battery life uses a 1080p video at 30 fps with a ~20Mbps rate. In this test, the battery of the Oukitel RT2 lasted for 29 hours and 46 minutes. The discharging process during this test follows the same pattern with a slow start and a slow end. The battery temperature remains low during the entire process. It starts at 24°C, reaches 27°C after 1 hour and 30 minutes from the start, and remains at this level until the end.
YEBIS OpenGL ES 3.0 3D Tech Demo
For the 3D Graphics/Gaming test, the YEBIS OpenGL ES 3.0 3D Tech Demo is used. The result from this test is 17 hours and 28 minutes. The discharging pattern resembles that of the browsing and video tests. The battery temperature starts at 24°C and in 1 hour and 30 minutes it goes up to 30°C. Four hours later is measures 31°C and maintains this level until the end.
