UMIDIGI Z1 Pro Review

Overview

UMIDIGI Z1 Pro has been marketed as the world's thinnest big battery smartphone. While we'll discuss its dimensions and weight in the design section of this review, it is worth noting that a 4000 mAh battery cannot be considered "big" when for the past two years there have been smartphones with 6000 mAh, 10000 mAh, and now even a 12000 mAh-battery smartphone is coming up. Another major selling point is the AMOLED display, which is a big thing as we're talking about the mid-range segment here. Finally, the model has two rear cameras, which should be another feature to lure customers. It is always worth making an in-depth review of an UMIDIGI smartphone as they have a history of good smartphones with controversial features and qualities. Of course, we will check every single detail about the Z1 Pro we can and see if it delivers what it promises.

Specifications

UMIDIGI Z1 Pro boasts a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a 1080p resolution and a 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 4 for protection. According to the manufacturer, the display panel covers 94% of the DCI-P3 colour space. The all-metal unibody of the smartphone houses a 4000 mAh Li-Pol battery that supports MediaTek Pump Express Plus 2.0 and is combined with a 12V/1.25A fast charger. As long as it concerns performance, the model relies on a MediaTek Helio P20 (MT6757) chipset. It has an octa-core CPU with four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.3GHz and another quadruplet of those clocked at 1.6GHz. The CPU is combined with a dual-core Mali-T880 MP2 GPU clocked at 900MHz. There are 6GB of dual-channel LPDDR4X RAM clocked at 1600MHz on board along with 54GB of built-in eMMC 5.1 storage that can be expanded with up to 256GB. UMIDIGI Z1 Pro has a front-mounted fingerprint sensor and a dual rear camera module aided by a quad-LED flash and PDAF. The main rear shooter is equipped with a 13MP Samsung S5K3L8 sensor and a 5-element lens with an f/2.2 aperture. The auxiliary rear snapper has a VGA GalaxyCore GC0310 sensor, interpolated to 5MP. On the front, a 5MP GalaxyCore GC5005 snapper with an f/2.4 lens sits. UMIDIGI Z1 Pro packs an LTE Cat.6 modem with VoLTE support that provides a wide range of network bands: 2G GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), 2.5G CDMA B0 for North America, 3G W-CDMA (850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz), 4G LTE-FDD (B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B12, B17, B19, B20), 4G LTE-TDD (B38, B39, B40, B41). In addition, the model supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi Display, Bluetooth 4.1. There's a USB Type-C 2.0 port with OTG support and this time, a 3.5 mm jack has found its way on board as well. The device works with GPS and GLONASS and arrives with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.

What's in the box

UMIDIGI uses luxurious boxes for its latest devices and the Z1 Pro is no exception. It arrives in a black box with a fingerprint texture on it that unfolds revealing a total of three compartments - the first two contain the charger and cable in separate boxes. They are joined together in a compartment called "Link to the world". Below them is the third one where the smartphone itself is placed together with an envelope full of accessories. Here's what you'll find inside the box beside the device:
