Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Review

Primary camera photo and video samples

The primary camera of Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is equipped with a 48MP Samsung S5KGM1 ISOCELL Slim sensor with a 1/2" optical format and 0.8 um. It supports 4-in-1 pixel binning, meaning that it should offer improved photos in low light conditions. In that case, four neighbouring pixels combine their information to form one 1.6um pixel and the photo resolution becomes 12MP. The Redmi Note 7 primary camera makes 12MP photos by default (4000 x 3000). Photos taken with the Night mode one have a 12MP resolution as well. If you want to take advantage of 48 megapixels, head to the Pro mode and click on the 48MP icon on the top of the screen. The primary camera also has a 6-element lens with an f/1.8 aperture and supports PDAF. It is specified to shoot 1080p videos at 30 fps and supports video image stabilization at that resolution, slow-motion 1080p and 720p videos at 120 fps, and 1080p at 60 fps. The auxiliary rear camera of the smartphone has a 5MP Samsung S5K5E8 ISOCELL Slim sensor with a 1/5" optical format and 1.12um pixel size. The second rear camera is used only when the smartphone shoots in Portrait mode. It has also been used for the second rear camera on Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, Redmi S2, Xiaomi Redmi Pro, Meizu m3 note. This sensor has also been used by Xiaomi quite often to power the front cameras of a number of its previous smartphones. The AI capabilities of the camera allow it to recognize 27 labels and 238 scenes and to adjust the photo properties accordingly.

Secondary camera photo samples

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 has a 13MP front-facing camera which combines an OmniVision OV13855 sensor with an f/2.0 lens. The same sensor is used by the front camera of Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 with Snapdragon 636. The selfie camera of the Redmi Note 7 shoots photos with a resolution of 4224 x 3136 pixels and 1080p videos at 30 fps. It supports AI portrait mode with background blur, AI smart beauty and face unlock.

Camera app

For quite some time, Xiaomi has adjusted its Camera app to reflect the new AI shooting realities and offer an improved and more streamlined workflow. The main screen contains a circular shutter button at the bottom's centre. To its left, there's a shortcut to the list of photos and videos and to its right, there's the camera switch. Above those buttons, you will see the list of shooting modes - Photo, Portrait, Video, Slow Motion, Short Video, Night, Square, Panorama, Pro. According to Xiaomi, with the Night mode on, you can take good photos at night or in low-light environments without using a tripod and still get good shots. The Portrait mode is when the second rear camera comes into play to create the blurred background. The Pro mode allows you to adjust the white balance, ISO, shutter speed. The cameras do not offer zoom. The top of the screen is occupied by the flash and HDR options, AI on/off button, filters icon and a hamburger menu that opens additional options depending on the type of shooting modes and a shortcut to the camera settings. AI works on scene detection and photo optimization accordingly and on beautification.
The Slow Motion video mode allows you to shoot 720p and 1080p videos at 120 fps. As mentioned earlier, the additional camera options available from the hamburger menu depend on the type of mode you're on. When you open the default Photo mode you can access the timer, tilt-shift, straighten, group selfie and beautification, which has two levels. When you're in video shooting mode you get access to time-lapse and slow motion options from this menu. The camera settings are also different. From the photo mode, you get access to the photo shooting settings such as gridline, time stamp, watermark, mirror front camera, camera frame, picture quality, exposure, saturation, contrast, and sharpness settings. From the video shooting mode, you get access to video shooting settings such as EIS, video quality, a video encoder (H.264 or H.265), time lapse interval, etc. There are settings that are common for all modes such as location info, camera sounds, anti-binding, auto exposure, fingerprint shutter, volume buttons function.
The interface for the front camera is identical to the one for the rear cameras. Whenever you choose a mode that's not supported by the front shooters (the Night mode, for example), the device simply switches to the rear cameras. Above the shooting modes, there's an icon for beautification effects. These are AI-powered effects and you can choose from two ways of applying them. The first is selecting the degree of a pre-set combination of beautification effects. The second allows you to apply manually the degree of each beautification effect - eyes enlargement, cheeks slendering, skin tone correction, etc. On the top of the main screen, you get the flash and HDR options, the AI button, a list of filters and the hamburger menu with additional options. For the Photo shooting mode, these additional options include a timer, magic mirror and age & gender info. There are no additional options for the other shooting modes. The photo and video settings are the same as the one for the rear cameras.
