Doogee S80 Review

Overview

While the Doogee S70 is focused on gaming and ruggedness, the Doogee S80 is focused on ruggedness, incredible battery life and extensive connectivity features. At first glance, the differences between the two models are not so many - with the S80 you get a double-sized battery, dual stereo speakers and a digital walkie-talkie, however, these are significant upgrades over the S70 and our in-depth review below will explain that in detail. The S80 receives the same display as the S70 but with better calibration and significantly higher brightness, better audio and speakers, significantly better battery autonomy, and an additional connectivity feature that's not widely available on smartphones - a digital walkie-talkie. Camera and chipset performance of the S80 is on par with the one of the S70. The OS and main apps are one and the same. The overall feeling we got from interacting with the Doogee S80 is that it has been created with attention to detail in order to offer better-than-expected experience. Let's begin our review with the model's specifications.

Specifications

Doogee S80 evolves around the same LG display provided on the previous model - the S70. This is a 5.99-inch IPS unit with an FHD+ resolution (1080 x 2160 pixels) and a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 for protection. However, the S80 is a massive device - one of the biggest we have reviewed. It easily falls in the "outdoor equipment" category and will survive any harsh environment you bring upon it. The body combines hard plastic, strong glass and aluminium alloy to create a sturdy shell that's water and dust resistant with IP68 and IP69K certifications. It is also resistant to shock, drop and extreme temperatures bearing the military MIL-STD-810G certification. Doogee S80 features a beefy 10080 mAh battery that supports MediaTek's Pump Express 3.0 and is coupled with a 12V/2A fast charger. It also supports 10W Qi wireless charging. Performance-wise, the model relies on a MediaTek Helio P23 (MT6763T) chipset. It houses an octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU with four 2.34GHz cores and four 1.79GHz ones. The graphics are handled by a dual-core 770MHz Mali-G71 GPU. Doogee S80 arrives with 6GB of dual-channel LPDDR4X RAM clocked at 1600MHz and 64GB of eMMC 5.1 internal memory that can be expanded with up to 128GB. The camera department on this model is identical to the one of the S70. The front-facing shooter combines a 16MP Samsung S5K3P9SP sensor with an f/2.8 lens. The dual camera module on the back includes a 12MP Sony IMX363 Exmor RS sensor paired with an f/2.8 lens and a 5MP auxiliary depth-of-field snapper. They are aided by dual PDAF and dual-LED flash. The smartphone supports 2G GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), 2.5G CDMA (800 MHz), 3G WCDMA (850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz), 3G TD-SCDMA (1880-1920, 2010-2025), 4G LTE-FDD (700 MHz Class 17, 800, 850, 900, 1700/2100, 1800, 1900, 2100, 2600 MHz), 4G LTE-TDD (700, 800, 1900, 2300, 2500, 2600 MHz) network bands with LTE Cat. 7 speeds. Both SIM cards on the dual Nano-SIM/microSD slot support 4G LTE. The wireless connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, and Bluetooth 4.0. The device is equipped with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, a USB Type-C 2.0 port with OTG support and lacks a 3.5 mm jack. Moreover, the Doogee S80 uses the Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) standard offering a digital walkie-talkie feature. The smartphone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with Doogee OS 2.0 on top accompanied by several outdoor tools and a walkie-talkie app.
