Vernee X Review

Overview

Vernee X is the first smartphone announced to feature MediaTek's Helio P23 chipset and one of the first to go to market. This system-on-chip has already proven to be very power efficient when we tested Oukitel K6 and its performance can be easily compared with that of the MT6757 SoC. It also brings several new technologies on board modern smartphones. Parallels between Vernee X and Oukitel K6 are actually inevitable as these devices are quite similar - shape, display, chipset, quad-camera concept, almost equal battery capacity. The following review won't make a detailed comparison between Vernee X and the K6 from Oukitel but comparisons between the two will be included where appropriate.

Specifications

Vernee X is built around a 6-inch in-cell IPS display from AUO with an FHD+ resolution (1080 x 2160 pixels) and a 2.5D curved glass. It is combined with an all-metal unibody that houses a 6200 mAh battery. The latter is coupled with a 12V/1.5A fast charger. Under the metal hood a MediaTek Helio P23 (MT6763) chipset ticks in a downgraded variant. It is built on the 16 nm process from TSMC and houses an octa-core CPU with eight 2GHz Cortex-A53 cores and a 700MHz Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. In terms of RAM and storage, the model has two variants: 4GB+64GB and 6GB+128GB. The RAM is LPDDR4X RAM, dual-channel clocked at 1600MHz. The built-in memory is of the eMMC 5.1 type and can be expanded with up to 128GB. The model supports 2G GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), 3G WCDMA (900, 2100 MHz), and 4G LTE-FDD (800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2600 MHz) network bands with Cat. 7 speeds as well as VoLTE and ViLTE. The wireless connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi Display, and Bluetooth 4.0. Vernee X features a quad-camera setup. The rear pair of shooters includes a 13MP Sony IMX258 sensor, interpolated to 16MP and coupled with an f/2.0 lens, and a 5MP auxiliary snapper. They are aided by a dual-tone LED flash and phase detection AF. The front-facing cameras include an 8MP OmniVision OV8856 sensor, interpolated to 13MP, combined with and an f/2.8 lens, and a 5MP auxiliary snapper, which are supported by a single-LED flash. The rear shooters are adjoined by a fingerprint sensor on the back of the model. The latter also has a USB Type-C 2.0 port with OTG support and no 3.5 mm jack. The smartphone runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat with Vernee's VOS 1.0 on top.
