OS, UI and software

Oukitel K9 is the first smartphone from the brand we review that arrives with Android 9 Pie. Most of the features are stock Android ones but the feeling is more of working with Android 8.1 Oreo instead of with Android 9. The UI offers no surprises at all. The Lock Screen greets you with the usual Voice Search and Camera shortcuts and swiping is the default unlocking method. The Home Screen features a docked row of apps that appears on every successive desktop and an row of favourite apps along with Google's folder. On the top, there's the Google search bar and a Time/Date widget below it. A swipe to the left from the Home Screen opens a second desktop that lists the pre-installed apps - quite a few of them. A swipe to the right from the Home Screen opens the Google App screen. Desktop shortcuts are supported.

The Notifications and Quick Settings offer no surprises. The latter features 12 toggles appearing on one page. The Task Manager tiles the apps vertically, not horizontally as in Android 9. There are a "Clear all" icon and a "White list" from where you can protect the apps you don't want to be cleared. The Widgets menu appears as a floating menu after a touch-and-hold on any empty space on any of the desktops. From here you can manage the Home Screen settings (show/hide the Google App and show/hide the notification dots). You can also add/remove widgets and change wallpapers. The Volume and Power menus have a typical Android 9 design as well. You can activate Google Assistant after a long touch on the Home button of the navigation bar.
Oukitel K9 arrives with a bit wider set of pre-installed applications but still keeps it to the minimum. The standard Google apps include Calendar, Chrome, Drive, Duo, Files, Gmail, Google App, Maps, Photos, Play Music, Play Store, YouTube. The default Android apps include Calculator, Clock, Contacts, Downloads, FM Radio, Messenger, Music, Phone, Sound Recorder. All of them are in their stock Android appearance and functionality. Of course, the Camera app is customized to fit the specific needs of the device. The additional applications pre-installed on the device include a Pedometer and a Toolbag that includes a compass, sound meter, gradienter, level, height measurement tool, magnifier, heart rate, protractor, plumb bob tool. The QR Scanner is available as a menu from the Settings and as an app. The same applies to the Wireless Update feature. From the Quick Settings, you can also activate the Screen Recorder.

Finally, there's the System Manager which offers several tools for optimizing the performance of your device. The first one is the Power Management tool, which is discussed in detail in the Battery section of this review. There's a Rubbish Cleaner for optimizing the storage, Application Lock, which requires a password and (if you choose so) fingerprint authorization in order to open a selected app, App Autoboot (list of apps that are allowed to autoboot), Application Freeze, which allows you to freeze an app so it behaves as if it is uninstalled, and an App Autoclean service - this one duplicates the White list option from the Task Manager - it protects selected apps from being cleared when you want to free RAM and save power.
The Settings menu is quite straightforward. The only change from the stock variant is the colourful round icons that mark the main menus in the list. As usual, the first two menus are about the wireless and mobile connectivity options of the device and its connections to other devices. The list continues with the Apps & Notifications settings, from where you can manage app permissions, special access, lock screen, various notification scenarios, etc. The Battery menu is fourth and will be discussed in the Battery section at the end of this review. The Display menu comes next with options for Night Light, Adaptive Brightness, brightness level, font and display size, screensavers and wallpapers, navigation bar options, etc.
It is followed by the Sound menu that manages the system sounds and vibrations, DND mode. The Storage menu not only provides data about the taken and free capacity but also has a shortcut to the storage cleaner and you can also toggle on the Storage Manager. The Security & Location menu comes next with the already standard Google Play Protect, Find My Device, Security Update. From this menu, you can set up the type of screen lock, manage your lock screen preferences, save/manage/delete one or more fingerprint IDs, choose Smart Lock options and tap in further privacy settings. The Face Unlock feature is separated from the Security & Location menu even though it provides the usual way of saving and managing your face ID as a type of screen unlock.
The Accounts menu is very simple and lets you save and manage various accounts you might have, including the Google one. The Accessibility menu is stock Android one and is followed by the QR Scanner listed here as a menu though it is more appropriate as an app. Additional fingerprint settings follow in a separate menu because they may be employed even if you don't set up a fingerprint ID. It is followed by the Gesture Motion menu that includes the three standard groups of options - telephony motion, system motion and smart somatosensory. The Google menu and DuraSpeed follow. DuraSpeed is on by default but you can't choose the apps to which it has to be applied, so by default it applies to all. The last menu is the System one with the Language & Input options, gestures ("Jump to camera" only), Date & Time, Backup, Reset, and About Phone.
