OS, UI and software

Leagoo KIICAA MIX runs on Leagoo Freeme OS on top of Android 7.0 Nougat. The overall look and feel are of almost stock Android 7.0. The Lock screen contains shortcuts to the Voice search and Camera apps. The Notifications and Quick settings appear by default on it. Their design is standard Android N one, only the Quick Settings lack the Users management icon. The Home screen contains a Voice search widget and a combined Clock-Date-Weather widget, which you can remove if you want to. There's a folder with all Google services available on the device along with favourite apps on top of a docked row of applications. The screen following the Home one contains the rest of the applications installed on the device. The navigation bar is onscreen only and you can customize it from the corresponding menu in the Settings. The Task Manager is standard as well. It does not offer a lock/unlock option for the apps but does support the split-screen mode, typical for Android N.
A tap and hold on an empty space on the Home screen opens the Widgets menu. It looks a bit overwhelming due to its design but in its essence, it is as typical as any other widgets menu. For starters, it offers a wide choice of themes and wallpapers available online and offline. There's a standard set of widgets and screen effects, too.
Leagoo KIICAA MIX arrives with the basic set of applications and not bloatware at all. The Google services include Play Store, Google, Chrome, Gmail, Maps, Drive, Play Music, Duo, Voice search and Photos. The rest of the applications are the default Android ones - Dialer, Contacts, Messenger, File Manager, Browser, Calculator, Clock, Calendar, Radio, Music, Sound Recorder, Gallery and Downloads. It is just the icons that look different, the apps are standard. The only two applications that differe from the usual set are the Weather and Leagoo App Store apps.
The Settings menu is typical for Android 7.0 Nougat. On the top, a list of suggestions is displayed and the groups of options follow starting with the Network & wireless one. It lets you manage your calls, cellular networks, SIM cards, data usage, wireless connections via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. The second group of options is named Device and lets you manage the Display, Sound, Notifications, Apps, Storage, Battery, Memory. From the Display menu, you can tweak the display's brightness, contrast, sharpness, contrast and blue light emission from via the MiraVision services. Again, there's no option for adaptive brightness as there are no proximity and light sensors on board. There's an additional group called Intelligence Assist, which contains a menu for the navigation bar, smart wake features (drawing a letter on the screen opens a corresponding application), and gestures such as double click to wake, three fingers slide to make a screenshot etc.
The Sound settings are the usual ones. Strangely, they contain the Cast display feature, which is found under Display, too. The Audio Enhancement is nothing more than the volume booster for the speaker. The Notifications and App menus are standard and allow you to set individual preferences for each application installed on the device. Personal is the name of the third group of settings and it contains the usual Location, Security, Account, Google, Language & input, Backup & reset menus. The only interesting one is the Security menu. It lets you set the type of lock for your phone, set up and manage smart lock features, set up and manage fingerprint IDs. Once you store a fingerprint ID you can use it not only for unlocking the device but also use the sensor as a shutter in the Camera app and or as a dialer in the Phone app. You can also assign a selected app, so it is locked/unlocked if needed.
The Account and Google menus provide the usual tools for managing your accounts stored on the device. The Language & input menu allows the addition of more than one primary language and the usage of a physical keyboard. The last group of settings is called System and it contains the standard Date & time, Accessibility, Printing, Schedule power on & off, and About phone menus. From the Quick Settings, we have activated the System UI Tuner, which offers additional options for the status bar and the DND features along with power notification controls. The About phone menu offers the usual Android, baseband, kernel versions and other data along with a shortcut to the updater. At the time of this review, our unit runs the latest software for this model.
