Oukitel WP15 Review - stunning battery life, 5G, and rugged design
You can buy an Oukitel WP15 at promotional prices from Oukitel's official store.

OS, UI and software

The Oukitel WP15 runs on Android 11 with Oukitel's slightly customized UI on top and some tweaking dedicated to saving battery life. The Lock Screen and Home Screen arrive as standard in terms of layout. The icons' design is a bit different, as always. Some of the most important apps are listed on a second desktop and all applications appear in the App Drawer. Desktop shortcuts are supported. The Task Manager tiles the apps horizontally and for each, you get shortcuts to app info and split-screen mode (if the latter is supported). A clear-all option is also provided. The Widgets menu allows you to manage the widgets, wallpapers, and Home settings which are quite limited. Oukitel has provided a feature called "Smart Panel". It offers shortcuts to various apps (radio, calendar, photos) and tools (power boost, screen record, clean up, lock screen). These can be customized and the Smart Panel becomes available after a short swipe from the left frame to the right. The Notification cards and Quick Settings shade retains the rounded corner design typical of the latest Android versions but the icons layout, colors, are changed a bit. The Quick Settings is the only place you access the Underwater Camera feature from.
The Oukitel WP15 arrives with all the basic Android and Google apps. Among those, it is the Clock that has a non-stock Android design. The Calculator is also tweaked with additional features such as a scientific calculator and metrics converter. There are other apps that we see very often in the recent devices we've reviewed - Notes, Kids space, and of course - a Tool Bag. Oukitel has also added an SOS app that makes a sound and flashes with an SOS signal. There's a System Manager comprising a cleaner, speed booster, data monitor, app manager, and power manager. The latter is described in the Battery section of this review. Additionally, Oukitel has provided a Game Mode app that ensures nothing will disturb you during gaming. An App Freezer is also available for temporary freezing of apps that consume too much power and/or data. Plenty of gesture functions are also available to enable more intuitive interaction with the device.
The System Settings have a traditional layout and follow the WP15 icon design paradigm - circular icons in electric green color. The various menus are not grouped in categories saving space and making you scroll less in the search of a setting. As usual, the list begins with a settings search bar followed by the first two menus. They are dedicated to connectivity - network, internet, and connections to other devices. The Apps & Notifications menu is third including all standard Android 11 features - conversations, notifications history, bubbles, screen time, default apps, app permission manager, and special app access. The Battery settings are fourth but we discuss them in the Battery section of this review. They are followed by the Display options with brightness level, dark theme, night light, adaptive brightness, LED notification light settings, etc. The System Navigation follows offering a choice between gesture and onscreen buttons navigation. The gestures can be further customized.
The Sound settings contain the classic volume level bars, vibrations and DND options, other sound settings. The Storage menu with a storage manager toggle comes next followed by the Privacy menu with the permissions manager, autofill service, location history, etc. The Location menu is listed as a separate entity allowing for more granular control over which app has access to your location data, permissions, history, accuracy, and emergency settings. The Security menu that follows includes the default services - Google Play Protect, Security Update, Find My Device, Google Play System Update. It also manages the screen lock, fingerprint and face IDs, smart lock, etc. The fingerprint options include not only using a fingerprint ID for unlocking the device but also for navigation and other smart features - using it as a shutter button in the camera app, answering a call in the phone app, etc.
The Security menu is followed by the standard Accounts settings, Accessibility settings, and SOS Call ones. The Gesture Settings are listed in a separate menu with gesture motion, smart motion, wake gestures, and others. The Custom Key Function menu is also separate offering you a choice of actions for a single press, double press, or long-press on the customizable button on the left frame. The last settings are standard including the Digital WEllbeing, Google, DuraSpeed, and System settings with About Phone data. There's also a Smart Panel menu with corresponding options.
