Primary camera

Xiaomi Mi A2 has two rear cameras, each of which can shoot independently. The first shooter is equipped with a 12MP Sony IMX486 sensor and an f/1.75 lens. The sensor has a 1/2.9" optical format and a 1.25 μm pixel size. It takes photos with a resolution of 4000 x 3000 pixels and is capable of shooting the following videos: 4K at 30 fps, 1080p at 60 fps, 1080p at 30 fps, 720p at 30 fps, 720p at 120 fps (slow-motion), 480p at 30 fps. The IMX486 is new (announced in February 2018) and is used by the cameras of two smartphones we have already reviewed: Xiaomi Redmi S2 and Doogee BL9000. On Mi A2 this 12MP camera is intended for usage in normal light conditions. The second camera is created especially for shooting in a low-light environment. It packs a 20MP Sony IMX376 sensor paired with an f/1.75 lens. It has a 1/2.78" optical format and a 1.0 μm pixel size. This camera takes photos with a resolution of 5184 x 3880 pixels. The sensor is announced in November 2016 and is used by the cameras of two OnePlus models we have reviewed: OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 6. The two rear cameras are aided by phase-detection AF and dual-LED flash. EIS stabilization for video is supported and can be ticked on/off from the camera settings. However, it works only when shooting 1080p videos and does not work when making 4K ones. When we use the Open Camera App, EIS works for both 1080p and 4K videos but it does not allow us to shoot 1080p at 60 fps. On a more global level, the camera department on Mi A2 is supported by Qualcomm's Clear Site camera features, which allow them to capture more light in low-light areas resulting in photos with less noise. The dual camera setup is supported by Qualcomm's Spectra 160 ISP. In addition, AI plays a major role here as well. On the global Mi A2, AI is limited to scene recognition, portrait shooting and low-light enhancement. On the Mi 6X for China, the AI features are a lot more and include translations, business card recognition, smart exchange rate conversion, Polaroid-style shooting, etc.

The front-facing camera has the same sensor as the second rear shooter - a 20MP Sony IMX376 sensor. However, in this case, it is combined with an f/2.2 lens. The front camera has been additionally AI optimized with a machine learning model that accurately distinguishes characters and background. It also employs the AI Beautify 4.0 and AI scene recognition. It is aided by a soft and warm LED flash. This camera shoots 5184 x 3880 photos and 1080p videos at 30 fps with real-time beautification feature. Xiaomi says that 20MP cameras on the back and on the front of the Mi A2 and Mi 6X use pixel binning technology. In professional cameras, the pixel binning, pixel skipping and overlapping technologies are not perceived as good practices. However, in mobile photography, it has become very modern to use pixel binning (think of the Huawei P20 Pro). Pixel binning is the simplest way to combine the colour information from neighbouring pixels. Xiaomi and other manufacturers refer to it as the creation of a 4-in-1 Super Pixel. Ultimately, the 1μm pixels of the sensor become ultra-large 2μm pixels in the recorded image. This means that as a result, the photo will be with a reduced resolution.

Camera App

The Camera application onboard the Mi A2 has a well-known interface. The circular shutter button is placed at the top of the screen with the camera switch shortcut to its right and the list of photos and videos to its left. Above them, you will see a reel with the available shooting modes - Photo (the default one), Video, Short Video, Portrait, Square, Panorama, Manual. The top of the screen displays the flash and HDR options along with the shortcut to the list of filters and additional camera options and settings. Of the available shooting modes, the Portrait and Manual ones are the most interesting. When shooting portraits, the object has to be up to 2 meters away from the camera. The Manual mode offers manual adjustment of the white balance, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and a manual switch between the two rear cameras - regular (the 12MP one) and low light (the 20MP one).
When you're in the Photo shooting mode and you click on the additional options you can set up a self-timer, switch on/off beautification, HHT, group selfie, tilt-shift and straighten. From here you can also access the camera settings, which are one and the same for the front and rear shooters and include picture quality and aspect ratio, pocket mode, camera sounds, location info, grid, time stamp, watermark, anti-banding, contrast, exposure, saturation and sharpness. For the front camera, there's a mirror function as well. When you're in the Video shooting mode and you click on the additional options you can choose to make time-lapse or slow-motion videos as well as access the video recording settings. These are one and the same for the front and rear cameras (except for the video quality) and include video quality, time lapse interval, image stabilisation, anti-banding and exposure settings as well as the usual pocket mode, location info, camera sounds, etc.
The interface for the front camera is largely the same. The only differences are: 1) it does not support Panorama and Manual mode, even though they're listed, and 2) for every supported mode there's a beautification icon which provides two levels of applying beautification effects - basic (by choosing from five pre-loaded sets) and advanced (with sliders for four facial features - slender cheeks, larger eyes, better skin tone, smoother skin). The front camera supports HDR, LED flash and the same filters as the rear shooters plus group selfie and self-timer. Photo editing happens via the pre-installed Google Photos app, which allows you to add effects and filters, adjust the position, saturation, brightness, contrast, etc. Google Lens should be included as this is an Android One device but it is actually not there at least not on this version of the software.
