Ulefone Armor 6 Review
You can buy an Ulefone Armor 6 at a promotional price from Amazon DE, Ulefone's official store on AliExpress, GearBest or Banggood.

OS, UI and software

Ulefone Armor 6 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with Ulefone's skin on top. The latter offers minor design optimizations and adds some useful options for customizations. The software works flawlessly. The Lock screen is quite traditional with the usual Volume and Camera shortcuts in the bottom left and right corners, fingerprint and/or face unlock icons, etc. A swipe up unlocks the device by default and you can change that from the Security settings. When you land on the Home Screen, you'll see the default design style without an app drawer. However, the Home Screen settings from the Widgets menu allows you to switch to a new style that includes an app drawer. Either way, a swipe to the left from the Home Screen opens the next desktop with the main apps listed on it. The Task Manager tiles the applications vertically and supports split-screen mode. It also contains a White List from where you can protect the apps you need to continue working on the background. The Notifications are typical Android Oreo ones but the Quick Settings shade has been re-designed a bit - darker background, different icon colours and positioning - 15 toggles per page. The Volume and Power off menus are slightly re-designed compared to the stock Android ones.
The Widgets menu can be accessed after a touch and hold on an empty space on any of the desktops. It offers extended options like the ones we've used to see on Xiaomi's MIUI for example. The list of Widgets appears as a single strip at the bottom of the screen. You can also choose from various screen transition effects and check out the various Home Screen settings. As mentioned above, you can change the appearance of the Home Screen but also change the appearance of the icons. You can make them smaller or larger and do the same with the label below them in addition to changing its colour. There are also three toggles for wallpaper scrolling, for auto-aligning of the icons after uninstall, for placing a search bar on the Home Screen. You can also set various functions to a swipe left, swipe right or swipe down from the Home Screen.
Ulefone Armor 6 arrives with a standard set of Google and default Android apps but also some additional ones that reflect the ruggedized nature of this smartphone. The usual Google apps include Chrome, Drive, Duo, Gmail, Maps, Photos, Play Music, Play Store, Voice Search, YouTube. The default Android apps include Calendar, Calculator, Camera, Clock, Contacts, Gallery, FM Radio, Messenger, Phone, Sound Recorder. Most of them are in their stock Android appearance and functionality, however, some details have been changed a bit - check the contact name in the Messenger screenshot - it has a different selection style. The File Manager seems to be an Ulefone one. A Translator app is there as well and supports both text and voice input. Ulefone has included a Game Mode as a separate application, from where you can manage the smartphone's behaviour during gameplay. Finally, there's the ToolBag app with a compass, sound meter, barometer, pedometer, level, magnifier, height measurer, protractor. The UV sensor icon shows the current UV level with a diagram. If the UV levels reach a certain level, the device will issue a warning.
The Settings menu looks and behaves like a traditional Android 8.1 Oreo one with minor design changes and several additional options. For starters, the icons in front of each group of settings are in colour and square in shape. The first two groups of options are about the wireless and device connectivity of the handset. From here, you can manage your Wi-Fi and mobile connections, data usage, SIM cards, VPN, Bluetooth and USB connections, printing services. The third group of options allows you to manage the apps and notifications, including app permissions, default apps, special app access, notification dots, lock screen notifications, etc. The Display group of settings is fourth and offers plenty of options. The usual ones are the display and font size, screen saver, brightness level, adaptive brightness toggle, wallpapers, screen sleep and auto-rotate. This group also contains Night Light settings, Mira Vision settings for optimizing the display in all aspects, LED navigation bar options, Navigation Bar options. From here, you can also hide the notch if you prefer that design style. This option is hidden under the Statusbar display menu.
The Sound group of settings is fifth and contains the standard set of options: three volume toggles, a choice of ringtones, DND preferences, vibration settings, additional sounds. It is followed by the Advanced Features group, from where you can toggle on/off the one-handed mode, pocket mode, app auto clean, smart dial and smart call answer. The DuraSpeed menu comes next and it is on by default. As you already know, this feature boosts the foreground apps, while limiting background ones. The Security & Location group of settings contains the standard set of options beginning with Google Play Protect, Find My Device, and Security update. Then, it continues with the screen lock settings, Lock Screen preferences, fingerprint IDs management, Smart Lock settings, privacy and data protection options. The fingerprint menu allows you to store and delete fingerprint ID(s) as well as assign an app shortcut to a fingerprint ID of choice. The Face Unlock menu comes next for storing, deleting and managing your face ID used for unlocking the smartphone when the screen is on. The Accounts menu follows, lacking user management options. The Accessibility group of settings is next and contains all the usual options such as Select to Speak, Switch Access, TalkBack, etc. The Fingerprint menu allows you to assign a certain function to a tap or a long-touch on the fingerprint sensor even if a fingerprint ID has not been saved.
The Gesture Motion group of options includes the telephony motion (answer calls by a swing, smart switch), system motion (three-point screenshot, three-point camera entry, two-point volume adjustment, double tap to lock, turn to snooze alarm), and smart somatosensory (launcher, camera, gallery, SMS somatosensory dial, unlock). This group is followed by the QR Code Scanner and the Gesture WakeUp group. The latter contains toggles for various signs, with which you can activate select applications after writing the sign on the display with your finger. This includes double tap to wake as well. The standard Google settings are next followed by a new menu - SOS Call. It allows you to activate an SMS call, edit the help message, include a flashlight or not, set emergency contacts, emergency message, etc. Of course, the last group of settings is the System one. From here, you can set up your language and keyboard preferences, including the Autofill service, activate the Jump to Camera toggle from the Gestures sub-menu, backup your data, reset the device, set the time and date, check the About phone data.
