Introduction
The Cubot KingKong Dura is a rugged smartphone built around a thin, streamlined profile and a dual‑battery swappable system that immediately stands out in a market where toughness usually means bulk. This model keeps its silhouette surprisingly slim while still carrying the full suite of durability certifications - water, dust, drop, and extreme‑temperature resistance - making it suitable for both everyday mishaps and demanding outdoor use. Its entry‑level hardware signals a practical, no‑nonsense approach: enough performance for communication and basic tasks, paired with the rare advantage of two hot‑swappable batteries that keep the device running long after typical phones power down.
Cubot KingKong Dura Specifications
The Cubot KingKong Dura has a 6.88‑inch IPS display with an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1640 pixels. The screen delivers 450 nits of maximum brightness and up to a 120Hz refresh rate. It has a V-shaped notch that houses the 16MP selfie camera with an f/2.25 aperture and a 27.1 mm focal length equivalent. The rear camera department is headed by a 64MP shooter with an f/1.8 aperture and a 31.4 mm focal length equivalent. It is adjoined by a 2MP macro lens with an f/1.85 aperture. A 5000 mAh removable battery keeps the lights on, and there's a second 5000 mAh unit in the box with hot-swap support and 20W fast charging.
Processing power depends on the Unisoc Tiger T620 system-on-chip. It houses an octa-core CPU with two 2.21 A75 cores and six 1.82 A55 cores. The graphics department is handled by a Mali-G57 GPU. The LPDDR4X RAM is available in two flavors - 8GB and 12GB - with virtual expansion of up to 12 additional GB. The built-in storage measures either 128GB or 256Gb and can be expanded via a microSD card.
The model ships with Android 16 out of the box and supports Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Wi‑Fi 5, Wi‑Fi Direct, Hotspot, and Cast Display. It is also fitted with a hybrid, dual Nano-SIM card slot, a side‑mounted fingerprint sensor, a customizable button, and a USB‑C 2.0 port. Cubot KingKong Dura Design, Build, and Controls
The Cubot KingKong Dura embraces a minimalist, utilitarian design that prioritizes function over flair, and its understated look is reinforced by an unusually slim profile for a rugged device. By shedding several millimeters from its frame and trimming noticeable weight, it avoids the typical brick‑like bulk that defines most durable smartphones. This lean construction is made possible by its dual swappable‑battery system, which delivers both enhanced portability and extended power autonomy - allowing the Dura to stay light in the hand while lasting far beyond a single charge.
The KingKong Dura is built from a practical tri‑material blend of metal, polycarbonate, and TPU. A metal chassis forms the rigid backbone of the device, giving it the structural strength needed to withstand impact. Polycarbonate panels wrap around it to create the outer frame and body, leaving portions of the vertical metal rails subtly exposed for a more technical aesthetic. Shock‑absorbing TPU completes the construction, covering the remaining surfaces and adding reinforced cushioning at the corners. Together, these elements produce a handset that feels well‑balanced in the hand - compact, secure to operate, and confidently rugged.
The handset carries IP68 and IP69K protection, safeguarding it against dust, high‑pressure water jets, and full water submersion. Its durability is further validated by MIL‑STD‑810H certification, confirming resistance to repeated 1.5‑meter drops and exposure to extreme temperatures. Altogether, the construction reflects a device engineered to withstand harsh environments while still maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic. Despite its rugged build, large display, and substantial battery system, the KingKong Dura remains compact (for a rugged smartphone) at 13 mm thick (not counting the camera bump), 85 mm wide, and 180.1 mm tall, with a weight of 311 g. The model is available in black and military green colors. We are reviewing a black version.
A large display dominates the front of the KingKong Dura, protected by a thin, factory‑applied screen protector that offers immediate scratch resistance out of the box. The bezels are impressively slim for a rugged device - 3 mm on the sides and 5 mm at both the top and bottom. The top bezel features a V‑shaped notch for the selfie camera, with the light and proximity sensors positioned to its right, followed by an LED notification indicator. Centered above them sits the meshed earpiece, right below the frame. System navigation is entirely on‑screen, allowing users to choose between gesture controls or a customizable virtual button layout.
The rear shell of the KingKong Dura follows a symmetrical, minimalist layout accented with subtle mecha‑style details. The top third is defined by an elongated camera island with rounded corners, housing the main camera, the macro lens, and a lens‑like element for the LED flash. A triangle‑shaped camping light sits in the module's lower‑right corner, while the remaining surface is filled with mechanical decorative motifs that reinforce the rugged aesthetic. The rest of the back is completely flat, as it serves as the mounting bed for the removable battery pack. A secure latch at the bottom locks the battery firmly to the chassis. The entire rear outline is chamfered and wrapped in TPU, improving grip, impact absorption, and overall resilience.
The upper frame is bare, while the lower one hosts the USB Type‑C port, the speaker, and the microphone. The bottom right corner has a lanyard hole. Along the left side, the hybrid dual‑SIM tray sits flush with the frame and can be pulled out with a pick or similar tool. Just below it is the customizable key. The right side maintains a compact, functional layout with a power button that integrates a fingerprint sensor for fast unlocking, accompanied by the volume rocker with a flat, unobtrusive profile.
Cubot KingKong Dura Display
The Cubot KingKong Dura is built around a 6.88‑inch IPS display panel with an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1640 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. The display settings comprise all the usual options such as the brightness slider, lock‑screen customization, adaptive brightness, dark theme, night light, and auto‑rotate toggles, display size adjustments, text scaling, refresh‑rate selection, color and contrast, and screen‑saver options. There are also additional features such as LED notification light options, backlight power saving toggle, pocket mode, Game Space, and Video display enhancement. The Game Space allows you to switch from SDR to HDR, to select performance mode, and enable advanced GPU settings, such as anisotropic filtering, mipmap level of detail offset, and texture filtering. The Video display enhancement improves video display quality on YouTube, Files, Photo Editor, and Photos apps.

Cubot KingKong Dura Software
The Cubot KingKong Dura arrives with a near‑stock take on Android 16, offering a familiar interface free of unnecessary overlays. The Lock Screen centers on a large clock, paired with a compact date readout and a Camera shortcut tucked into the lower‑right corner. On the Home Screen, the classic layout remains intact: a unified time‑and‑date widget, a favorites row, a bottom dock, and a Google search bar equipped with voice input and Lens. Desktop shortcuts are supported, and swiping left reveals an additional panel with an app list, while swiping right brings up Google Discover. Activating the app drawer in Home Settings provides access to the full roster of installed apps. The Task Manager arranges app previews in a horizontal strip, providing quick access to app info, split‑screen mode when supported, screenshot capture, and one‑tap closing. The Customization Picker gathers wallpapers, styles, widgets, and Home settings into a single hub, where users can enable or disable the app drawer, Google Discover, and notification dots. A single downward swipe reveals the notification shade, and a second swipe expands the full Quick Settings panel, which is organized across three pages of toggles for easier navigation.

The Camera app on the Cubot KingKong Dura follows the familiar layout seen across recent Cubot smartphones. Along the bottom edge sit the core controls: the shutter button, the shortcut to your photos and videos, the front/rear camera switch. Just above them is the reel of shooting modes. The top portion of the interface hosts various mode‑dependent options, including a shortcut to Lens and mode-specific camera settings."Capture" is the default mode and supports HDR, flashlight, beautification features, and filters. There's also a 64MP dedicated mode and a "Night" mode to use when it is dark (with a tripod preferably). The "Video" comes next, offering basic recording controls with flash support. Selecting "Macro" switches the interface to the macro camera, which can capture both photos and videos. The "More" tab includes the following additional shooting modes: Pro, Panorama, Time Lapse, Slow Motion, Audio Note, QR Code, and Portrait.
Cubot KingKong Dura Battery Life Tests
The Cubot KingKong Dura arrives with two 5000 mAh battery packs - one mounted on the device and one in the box. Each supports 20W fast charging and there's a dock charger included in the box as well - you can charge one of the packs while the other one is in use.
Being a fully certified rugged device and offering swappable batteries, the KingKong Dura meets the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 and Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 - two complementary EU laws governing device durability and battery sustainability. For smartphones and tablets, these rules require batteries that users or independent repairers can remove and replace with basic, widely available tools.
To skip the battery removability requirement, devices must have at least IP67 water and dust resistance, all other repairability requirements should be met, and the battery must retain at least 80% of its capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles.
Below, you'll find the results from our in‑house battery‑life testing. As always, every device is calibrated to a display brightness of 200 cd/m², and battery‑saving features are disabled wherever possible to ensure consistent, comparable measurements.
The battery of our review unit reached a full charge in 2 hours and 5 minutes using the bundled charger and cable. It takes 1 hour and 25 minutes for the battery to go from 0% to 80% with a stable charging pace. After that, the process slows down, and it takes another 40 minutes to complete the process.
The voltage starts at 4050 mV, rises to 4150 mV in three minutes, and continues to increase gradually until it reaches 4450 mV after 1 hour and 10 minutes. At that point, the voltage level plateaus and remains at this level until the end.
The battery temperature starts at 24 °C, drops to 18 °C, and immediately starts increasing slowly. It reaches 30°C in 50 minutes, and 32°C in another 20 minutes. After 35 minutes, it starts decreasing, ending at 29°C.
During our intensive browsing test at a fixed 60 Hz refresh rate, the KingKong Dura delivered 9 hours and 15 minutes of uninterrupted use. The discharge curve shows a steady process from the start until the battery drops to 3% of its charge, when a minor slowdown occurs. Thermal behavior is quite unusual. The battery starts at 30°C, hits 40 °C in a couple of minutes, and 5 minutes later it starts a constant fluctuation between 40°C and 47°C until the end.
The 120Hz browsing test yielded almost the same result. Most probably, this is because, in the Display settings, the 120Hz refresh rate tier functions as an automatic feature - the device decides what refresh rate would be suitable for a corresponding app and content.
1920x1080, 30 fps, H.264, 20Mbps bitrate
The video playback test uses a 1080p file encoded at 30 fps and roughly 20 Mbps, and in this scenario the KingKong Dura achieves 14 hours and 21 minutes of continuous runtime. The charging process is steady for the majority of time. When the battery reaches 3% of its charge, the process speeds up. The battery temperature begins at 30 °C, reaches 40°C in 30 minutes, and continues to increase until it reaches 43 °C after another half an hour. After that, the temperature drops to 40°C and fluctuates around this level until the end.
