Battery Tests

8849 Tank 3 by Unihertz packs a 23800 mAh Li-Pol battery and arrives with a 120W fast charger. Unihertz told us that in addition to increasing the battery capacity, they have also improved the battery voltage. This ensures longer battery life, according to laboratory tests, and ensures stable performance during prolonged workload sessions, for example - longer gaming sessions. All battery tests we run on the devices we review are developed by us and performed with the screen of the device being calibrated to 200 cd/m2. Battery-saving features are disabled.
Charging (1 hour and 41 minutes)
Thanks to the 120W fast charging support, the battery of our review unit charged in full for 1 hour and 41 minutes. The charging process is very quick during the first 22 minutes during which the battery regains 40% of its charge. After that, the process slows down only a bit and the battery regains its charge up to 60% for the next 20 minutes. The third stage is from 60% to 90% during which the charging process slows down even more and it takes 30 minutes. The final 10% of the charge are regained for another half an hour (approx.), during which the process slows down further. The battery temperature begins at 29°C, reaches 45°C in 20 minutes, and 47°C after another 15 minutes. The temperature peaks at 48°C for a couple of minutes at the 42-44 minute mark and then begins decreasing to measure 34°C at the end.
Browsing at 90 Hz (52 hours and 16 minutes)
During our intensive browsing test with the screen's refresh rate set at 90Hz, the battery lasted for 52 hours and 16 minutes. The discharging process is stable from the start until the end with a minor slowdown after the battery drops to 10% of its charge. The device switched off at 4%. When plugged in to charge, charging started from 1%. The battery temperature starts at 27°C and after 3 hours and 30 minutes, it drops to 26°C. It remains at this level for 45 hours and afterward goes back to 27°C, remaining at this level until the end.
Browsing at 120 Hz (49 hours and 59 minutes)
During our intensive browsing test with the screen's refresh rate set at 120Hz, the battery lasted for 50 hours. This is an exceptional result for this smartphone that packs a big 6.79-inch FHD+ display and a powerful 3.1GHz 5G chipset. The discharging process is stable from the start until the end with a minor slowdown after the battery drops to 10% of its charge. The device switched off at 5%. When plugged in to charge, charging started from 1%. The battery temperature graph shows the device really keeps its cool. It starts at 23°C, reaches 26°C in 1 hour and 40 minutes, and remains at this level almost until the end when it fluctuates between 27°C and 25°C for the last 7 hours.
1080p Video at 90 Hz (62 hours and 15 minutes)
1920x1080, 30 fps, H.264, 20Mbps bitrate
The video test for battery life uses a 1080p video at 30 fps with a ~20Mbps rate is used. Due to the lack of a 60Hz display mode, we test the device at the lowest refresh rate possible - 90Hz. Even at this level, the Tank 3 shows an amazing battery life - 62 hours and 15 minutes. It is only second to the result of the Oukitel WP15 - 63 hours and 4 minutes. However, it should be noted that the WP15 has a smaller display, lower resolution, and a weaker chipset. The Tank 3 beats the Oukitel WP19 - a model with a similar display, 4G chipset, and a 21000 mAh battery - by two hours. Once again, we remind you, all devices so far are tested at 60Hz for the video battery life test and the Tank 3 is tested at 90Hz. The discharging process follows the same pattern observed during the browsing tests. Again, the device stops at 5%. The battery temperature throughout the whole process is 24-26°C.
2160p Video at 90 Hz (51 hours and 29 minutes)
3840x2160, 30 fps, H.264, ~55 Mbps bitrate
The 4K video battery life test uses a 2160p video at 30 fps with a ~55 Mbps rate. This test was also performed with the display's refresh rate set at 90Hz - the lowest possible. Once again, the Tank 3 shows an amazing battery life - 51 hours and 29 minutes. It is only second to the result of the Oukitel WP19 - 53 hours and 8 minutes, achieved at 60Hz. The discharging process follows the same pattern observed during the previous tests. The battery temperature starts at 23°C, reaches 27°C in three hours, and remains at this level for 10 hours. After that, it drops to 26°C, stays there for 10 hours, and goes up to 27°C again, visits 28°C, and finally increases to 29°C, where it stays for 9 hours until the end.
3D Graphics/Gaming 90 Hz (24 hours and 08 minutes)
YEBIS OpenGL ES 3.0 3D Tech Demo
For the 3D Graphics/Gaming test, the YEBIS OpenGL ES 3.0 3D Tech Demo is used. The display's refresh rate is 90Hz. The result from this test is 24 hours and 8 minutes. The discharging process follows the same pattern observed during the previous tests. The battery temperature starts at 25°C and reaches 34°C after two hours and 10 minutes. It remains at this level for 5 hours, then drops to 33°C for more than 11 hours, and goes up to 34°C again. Two hours before the end, the battery temperature drops to 29°C.
Infrared thermography
The above photos of the 8849 Tank 3 by Unihertz are taken with a FLIR thermal camera. The upper photo shows the device's temperature during charging. The hottest zone is the left frame, near the second customizable button with a temperature of 40.6°C. The second hottest point is the opposite area on the right frame with a temperature of 40.4°C. The third hottest area is the near the top right corner with a temperature of 39°C. The second photo depicts the device's temperature during our 3D battery life test. In this case, the hottest part is the middle of the chin with a temperature of 37.6°C.

Battery Settings

The Battery menu contains all elements typical for stock Android 13. It depicts the battery charge level and status continuing with the battery usage data. The latter shows which app, hardware part, or service has consumed the most power. Clicking on it, allows you to manage its battery usage by restricting, unrestricting, or optimizing it. Then there's the Battery Saver toggle, which is off by default. You can manually switch it on. There's also a toggle for the saver to switch off automatically when the battery is charged above 90%. An option to schedule the battery saver to switch on automatically when the battery charge drops to a selected level is also provided. Adaptive Battery is simply a different name for the Battery Manager toggle. When this service is on, it detects apps that are draining the battery and issues a warning with an option to restrict those apps. Finally, there's the battery percentage toggle, which shows/hides the percentage level from the status bar.
