Primary camera

Unfortunately, there's no official information about the sensor models of the Huawei Honor Play cameras. The model has two separate rear cameras with a single-LED flash, phase-detection AF and contrast focus. The first has a 16MP sensor combined with a 6-element lens with an f/2.2 aperture. The second has a 2MP sensor and an f/2.4 lens. The second camera is used together with the main one when you shoot in Portrait mode. The rear camera takes photos with a resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels and shoots 4K videos at 30 fps, FHD+ videos at 30 fps, FHD at 60 fps/30 fps, and HD videos at 30 fps. 120 fps slow-motion and time-lapse video shooting is supported as well. The handset has video stabilization but it is not available for the 4K videos. In addition, the FHD at 60 fps videos are quite blurry, so don't use this option at all. AI for shooting photos is here as well and thankfully, there's a button with which you can disable it. Using intelligent photography algorithms, the Honor Play identifies 22 different types of scenes and objects (9 more compared to the Honor V10) and automatically adjusts in real-time the colour, contrast, brightness, exposure and other parameters. However, just like in the Honor V10, this feature needs fine-tuning not in recognition but in the automatic adjustment of photo properties. Compared to the photos that are made without AI, the "adjusted" ones look at times overexposed, with increased colour saturation and less detail.

Secondary camera

The front-facing camera of Huawei Honor Play is equipped with a 16MP sensor with a 2.0 μm pixel size (4-in-1 pixel binning) and an f/2.2 lens. The camera takes photos with a resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels and shoots 1080p videos at 30 fps. Its Portrait Mode is powered by AI as well for creating a background blur. As long as it concerns the face-recognition function, Huawei says it uses a three-dimensional approach to protection. Firstly, the security algorithm creates a face map with more than 1000 information points. After that, it stores this data in the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) area of the Kirin chipset and finally, it prevents the phone from being unlocked if the user's eyes are closed. This function on the Honor Play is lightning fast, indeed, and can be used together with fingerprint recognition, if utmost security is your primary concern.

Camera App

The Honor Play uses Huawei's proprietary Camera app that reflects the enhanced capabilities of the shooters, which are powered by AI software. The main screen contains a large shutter button placed in the bottom's centre. The camera switch is placed to its right and the shortcut to the list of photos and videos is to its left. Above them, you will see the list of shooting modes that reel to the left and right. Photo is the default one and is accompanied by Portrait, AR lens, Aperture, Video, and More shooting modes. The latter includes PRO, Slow-mo, Night, Panorama, 3D Panorama, Light painting, HDR, Time-lapse, Filter, Watermark, Document scan, 3D Creator, Artis mode and a link to download more. The shooting options are simply overwhelming and we think Huawei could organize them better. Under the Photo mode, you can activate a feature, which allows you to point the camera at an object, recognize it and automatically be redirected to an online shopping platform. QR code scanning is enabled as well. You can also create moving pictures by simply tapping on the icon that's next to the LED flash icon. It captures a brief video clip with every still image and your photos come to life as you swipe through the gallery. Right next to it, you will also see the AI and settings icons.
In Portrait mode, you can turn off/on the background blur. When the blur is on, you will be able to make some decent portraits but it's not that advanced as in higher-end smartphones. You can also use a 3D lighting effect and beautification. The Aperture mode simulates apertures from f/0.95 to f/16 and when you edit a photo, you can change the aperture and focus point. The AR Lens mode allows you to play with different backgrounds, effects and 3D objects. The Video mode offers real-time beautification as well. The PRO mode lets you manually adjust a number of properties: the ISO from 50 to 6400, the shutter speed from 1/4000s to 30s, the exposure compensation from -4 to +4EV in 1/3 stop increments, the white balance, the metering mode (matrix, center-weighted and spot), the focus mode (single, continuous and manual). There's an HDR mode, probably intended for occasions when you're not using the AI. The Night and Light painting modes are better used with tripods as you'll need very slow shutter speeds and it's impossible to shoot from hand. There's a bunch of other modes to play with and inspire your creativity such as 3D creator and Artist mode.
The camera settings for photo shooting contain resolution options, timer, audio control, grid options plus toggles for a RAW format, GPS tag, watermarks, touch to capture, capture smiles, mute, and ultra snapshot, volume button function and touch & hold shutter button features. The camera settings for video shooting offer a choice of video resolutions, a toggle for the video stabilization (not available for 4K videos), ultra snapshot, volume button function options, mute and GPS tag toggles. You can shoot videos in H.265 and H.264 formats. The interface for the front camera is largely the same. The default mode is the Portrait one which supports bokeh on/off, beautification and 3D lighting. The Photo mode supports Live photo and the Video supports real-time beautification. AR Lens, Aperture and the other shooting modes are not supported by the front camera.
The photo editing options include rotating, cropping, adding filters, splashing and adding an illusion with three different effects (circular, linear, blur), adjusting colour parameters - brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, highlights, shadows, hue, B/W filter. Photos with an applied beautification effect or shot with the Aperture mode can be edited afterwards with further adjusting of the effect, focus point and aperture value. You can also apply a mosaic, graffiti, watermark or label on the image. The photo editor even allows you to choose from other apps that are capable of photo editing.
