Cameras

The Camera app is the traditional MIUI one. It has the same options as the one on Xiaomi Mi 6, however, the Modes menu is now called Options. On the top of the main screen, there are flash and HDR options, along with a Portrait Mode function. It is a special feature that employs the two rear shooters to work together and create beautiful portraits with a naturally blurred background. At the bottom of the main screen of the Camera app, there is a circular shutter button with video recording button on its right and a shortcut to the Gallery on its left. The Options (formed Modes) shortcut is above the shutter button. To its left is the filters icon and to its right - the camera switch. The various Options/Modes include Panorama, Timer, Audio, Manual, Straighten, Beautify, Group selfies, Tilt-shift, Square, HHT. The Manual one allows you to set manually the ISO, white balance, exposure, and focus. It also allows you to choose with which camera to shoot - the wide angle or the telephoto one.
From the list of options, you can access the camera settings that include photo quality/resolution, contrast, saturation, sharpness, and other settings. If you want to shoot video, click on the video button next to the shutter. From there you can access the time-lapse and slow-motion shooting modes as well as the video settings that include video quality, focus mode, time lapse interval, etc. The front camera interface has an almost identical layout without the flash, HDR and portrait mode options. However, it has Beautify 4.0 feature with three beautification modes - Smart (low, medium, high), Pro (slim face, tone, skin) and Off. The camera Options/Modes include Timer, Audio, Magic mirror, and Group selfies, while for video shooting there are no available options. The photo and video settings are largely the same as those for the primary camera. Editing a photo happens after you open it with the Gallery app. You can apply various filters/effects, adjust the position of the frame, its saturation, sharpness, contrast, brightness and other parameters, adding stickers, text and doodling on the image.

Primary camera

Xiaomi Mi Note 3 has two rear cameras - a setup identical to the one of Xiaomi Mi 6. The primary shooter is equipped with a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 Exmor RS sensor with a 1/2.9" size and 1.25 μm pixel size. It makes photos with a resolution of 4032 x 3016 pixels and is capable of shooting 1080p video at 30 fps, 4K video at 30 fps, time-lapse and slow-motion videos - 720p at 120fps. The sensor is combined with a 6-element lens with an f/1.8 aperture. The camera is aided by a dual-tone LED flash, phase-detection autofocus, and 4-axis OIS (optical image stabilisation), which achieves image stability via the accelerometer and gyroscope built in the device and providing a high-speed detection of 8 directions of jitter with a real-time drive micro motor. The same sensor is used on the Mi MIX 2 primary camera. The auxiliary rear camera is equipped with a 12MP Samsung S5K3M3 and an f/2.6, 5-element telephoto lens with a focal length of 52 mm (35 mm equivalent), 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom, 4-axis OIS. It makes photos with a resolution of 4000 x 3000 pixels. The two shooters can work together when the Portrait mode is on or separately - you can switch between them from the Lens option under the Manual mode. We rarely state any assessments for the cameras, but we must say that the blurred background under Portrait Mode is one of the better solutions we've seen lately.
Wide lens (1X)
Tele lens (2X)
HDR: Off
HDR: On
Portrait mode: Off, tele lens (2X)
Portrait mode: On (tele lens is enabled automatically)

Secondary camera

The front-facing camera of Mi Note 3 is equipped with a 16-megapixel Samsung S5K3P3 sensor with a 1/5" size and a f/2.0 lens. It makes photos with a resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels and shoots 1080p videos at 30 fps. However, the most important feature of the front shooter is the usage of a newly developed face recognition algorithm. Xiaomi calls it "Adaptable AI Beautify" feature and has shared that it has been developing it for half a year. This feature employs AI-based algorithms to beautify selfies based on thousands of people faces, 226 bones RBI, and 3D face-lift. It even uses different algorithms for men and women. The same 16-megapixel Samsung S5K3P3 sensor has been used for the primary cameras of several devices we have reviewed: Ulefone Armor 2, Ulefone T1, Doogee Mix, Vernee Apollo Lite, Ulefone Future, Gionee S8, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro 16GB.
