Design, build and controls

Doogee S80 offers the utmost protection in terms of surviving harsh environments. It has a classic ruggedized design and while the S70 had an elegantly business flair to it with its natural leather back, the S80 is created exclusively for outdoor usage - whether for business or fun. The body features an aluminium alloy chassis and frame complemented by high-quality plastic that covers all sensitive areas - the corners, edges and display edges. The backplate has a rubbery finish to it that prevents from slippering. The specific octagonal and trapezoidal shapes ensure improved ergonomics and resistance to drops. The handset is entirely black with select coloured accent lines on the back, which are available in Mineral Black and Fire Orange colours for which the manufacturer uses dual colour injection moulding. We are reviewing a mineral black unit. Doogee S80 has all the necessary certification to ensure it will survive most extreme environments. The IP68 rating means that it is water-proof and 99% dust resistant. According to Doogee, the handset can survive submergence in 1.5 meters of water for 2 weeks. Doogee S80 is IP69K certified as well, so it is protected against water pressure up to 100 bar (1450 psi) and against extreme temperatures from -30 up to 60 degrees Celsius - it can withstand the thermal steam wash test defined in EN 60529 and DIN 40050-9. The IP69L certification means the handset is shock-proof. The model has also passed the strict MIL-STD-810G certification where it survives multiple tests with temperature and transport shocks, humidity, mould, salt spray corrosion, explosive gas, vibration, etc. Doogee S80 is huge. Indeed, when you open the box the first impression is how amazingly big this smartphone is. We did expect it, however, as we have reviewed many ruggedized smartphones with big batteries and being bulky and heavy is the price they pay for being able to survive various harsh conditions and offer unbeatable battery autonomy. With all of its features, the S80 can easily turn into a necessary outdoor equipment. It weighs the hefty 393 grammes and is the heaviest smartphone on the market for the past few years. Other devices of the same class - with 5.7-6-inch displays and 10000 mAh batteries weigh a maximum of 365 grammes (think Oukitel WP2, Ulefone Armor 3 and 3T, Blackview BV9500 and BV9500 Pro). This model is also the tallest and widest one with a height of 172 mm and width of 82.5 mm. However, the Doogee S80 is not as thick as its competitors and its profile measures 13.6 mm. The display covers 65.46% of the total front surface of the smartphone. Its sides are generously covered with that high-quality plastic so it is protected from all sides if you drop your device. You also get thick forehead, bezels and chin. The forehead houses the front camera, earpiece, light/proximity sensor. The chin is very thick and bare. The on-screen navigation bar, which cannot be customized in any way, occupies the area above the chin. We think that capacitive buttons could have been used in the chin as to save display screen estate and get the most out of it. The front's bottom has a microphone hole right off the middle. The display is covered with a Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The back shell is made of the usual ruggedized material that is very tough and protects against drops, shock, temperature extremities, water and dust. The back has sloping sides to improve ergonomics. The top middle is occupied by the camera module with the dual LED flash and the fingerprint sensor. The whole unit is covered with a metal plate made of the same aluminium alloy used for the frame. At the bottom of the handset, there's a metal plate with the Doogee logo on it and below it, you will see the holes for the two stereo speakers. They are very loud and even if the handset lies on its back, the sound is not hindered in any way. The left-hand-side frame houses the hybrid, dual-SIM tray, the dedicated walkie-talkie button and the customizable physical button. The SIM tray has a protective tap, while the physical buttons have a distinctive red colour/outline and textured surface. The walkie-talkie button directly enters this mode of the device. The customizable button can serve as a shortcut to activating the SOS mode, the Custom Mode or for opening a pre-selected app. The right-hand-side frame houses the Volume and Power off buttons that do not protrude much and offer a very good tactile experience. In the centre of the top frame is the port, to which you can attach the walkie-talkie antenna. It has a protective tap as well. The USB Type-C port with OTG support is in the centre of the bottom frame with a protective tap on top. Doogee has made a very nice video of the Doogee S80 features and we share it with you below:
