Doogee S80 Review
The sample for this Doogee S80 review is courtesy of Doogee.

OS, UI and software

Similar to previous Doogee models, the S80 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with the manufacturer's overlay on top dubbed Doogee OS 2.0. The only difference from the stock Android appearance is the design of the Quick Settings and icons. The Lock screen shows a time and date widget with the Voice Search and Camera apps in the bottom left and right corners. A swipe up from the bottom of the screen unlocks the handset by default and you land on the Home screen which also has a time and date widget, Google search bar, a row of favourite apps and a row of docked apps. The latter appears on every successive desktop. When you install new apps, they appear on the main list and on desktops successive to the Home screen. The main list of apps is accessed from the App Tray. The list displays them in alphabetic order with a search bar on top. Desktop shortcuts are enabled. The Task Manager tiles the apps vertically and contains two buttons - a Clear All one and a White list. From the White list you can select which apps should be protected or not from being cleared. Split-screen mode is enabled as well.
A swipe to the right from the Home screen opens the Google app. You can switch it off from the Widgets menu. The latter can be accessed after a long press on an empty space on any of the desktops. It contains the usual Widgets, Wallpaper and Home screen settings. The Home screen settings include the already mentioned toggle for switching on/off the Google App, the Notification dots and for adding newly installed apps on the Home screen. The Notification cards have preserved their stock Android appearance and functionality. Notification snoozing and channels are supported. The design of the Quick Settings shade is made by Doogee but the functionality is a typical Android Oreo one. The Volume and Power-off menus are typical Android 8.1 ones as well.
In terms of pre-installed apps, Doogee S80 offers the very basic set of applications - all the default Google and Android apps. The Google applications include Calendar, Chrome, Drive, Duo, Files Go, Gmail, Google App, Maps, Photos, Play Music, Play Store, YouTube. The default Android apps include Calculator, Camera, Clock, Contacts, FM Radio, Messenger, Phone, Sound Recorder, and Videos. All of them are in their stock Android appearance and functionality. Doogee has also decided to list an icon shortcut to the Face Unlock feature.
The System Manager offers several tools for optimizing the performance of your device. The first one is the Power Management tool, which is discussed in detail in the Battery section of this review. There's a Rubbish Cleaner as well for optimizing the storage, Application Lock, which requires a password and (if you choose so) fingerprint authorization in order to open a selected app, App Autoboot (list of apps that are allowed to autoboot), Application Freeze, which allows you to freeze an app so it behaves as if it is uninstalled, and an App Autoclean service - this one duplicates the Whitelist option from the Task Manager - it protects selected apps from being cleared when you want to free RAM.
Being a ruggedized smartphone, Doogee S80 also arrives with a barometer and a pedometer pre-installed plus a special ToolBag app that contains a compass, sound meter, level, altimeter, magnifier, protractor, plumb bob. Of course, there's the Talkie application which you can also start with the dedicated physical button on the left frame. It lets you choose the communication frequency, the power and volume, you can also start a chat and enjoy further functionalities.
The Settings menu is very close to the Android Oreo one. It is the icons that are different and some additional menus that are activated but lack in stock Android variants. After the search bar and list of suggestions, you see the actual list of system settings menu. As usual, it begins with the Network & internet and Connected devices groups. The first manages your Wi-Fi connection, mobile networks and data, SIM cards, VPN connections, etc. The second manages your Bluetooth, NFC with Android Beam, USB and printing connections. There's a new menu that appears here - the Chromebook one, which manages the device's connection to a Chromebook. The Settings continue with the standard Android Oreo notifications and app settings, followed by the display and sound options, which offer nothing new. The Storage and Battery menus are self-explanatory and are followed by the DuraSpeed one. This feature is switched on by default. It gives an advantage to foreground apps at the expense of background ones.
The Security & Location menu comes next. The first three options are the usual Google Play Protect, Find My Device and Security update. The rest of the options are pretty much familiar. You get a choice of screen locks, lock screen options, facial unlock and fingerprint settings, smart lock, privacy options such as location and show passwords, etc. The Security menu is followed by the Accounts and Accessibility ones, which offer the same features you're already familiar with. They are followed by a second Fingerprint menu. This time it provides various options for actions depending on whether you tap on or long-touch the sensor. For example, you can set a single touch on the sensor to serve as a Back command or a touch and hold on it to lead to the Home screen. The Gesture WakeUp menu comes next containing toggles with app shortcuts. Once you write with your finger the corresponding sign on the screen, the app is started. A stock-Android feature that is often omitted has been added to the Settings menu of S80 - the Gesture Motion. It contains three types of gestures - telephony motion (turn to silence), system motion (three-finger screenshot, etc.), smart somatosensory (for unlocking, navigating in the gallery or music, app, etc.)
There are two menus, which rarely appear as options and for sure could be placed somewhere inside the larger groups of options. These are the Scan Code (QR code scanning) and Background auto clean memory. These menus are followed by the Custom Key Function menu from where you can customize the dedicated physical button on the left frame of the handset. You can set it to activate the SOS Mode, or the Custom Mode, or start an app. The standard Google management menu is next followed by the System one. It is the last Settings menu and combines in one place the Languages & Input settings - including the new autofill services for remembering logins, Date & Time, Backup, Reset, SOS Call and About phone. The SOS Call menu will be activated once you customize the physical button to open the SOS Mode. The About Phone menu contains the standard requisites, including a Wireless Update at the top of the list. At the time of this review, the smartphone has the latest software available for this model.
