Display

The nubia Z60 Ultra Photographer Edition is adorned with a 6.8-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1116 x 2480 px, a pixel density of 400 ppi, and a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen uses the latest BOE Q9+ OLED material for flexible displays. Compared to the Q9, which was released in 2021, it offers better color reproduction and uniformity with color stability increased by 50%. The Q9+ is also brighter compared to the Q9 with nubia achieving in their labs 1500 cd/m² peak brightness at 1% or 2% APL. The Q9/Q9+ OLED family of BOE displays use the company's self-developed blue diamond pixel layout, which fully optimizes the underlying logic architecture of the screen pixel design achieving richer colors and overall improved picture quality. The close-up photo of the sub-pixel structure is identical to that of Samsung's Diamond PenTile sub-pixel architecture. At the close-up, the red pixels on BOE's display panel have a brighter center that makes it look orange instead of red. Moreover, thanks to BOE's innovative integrated cutting and fitting technology and center-hole digging design, the screen bezels can be precisely controlled and reduced to a minimum. The bottom one measures only 1.31mm, the side bezels are minimalistic at 0.93 mm, and the top one is even slimmer at 0.84 mm. The display panel on the nubia Z60 Ultra Photographer Edition has a 2.5D curve on all four sides. It supports 10-bit color bit depth and covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color space. The screen adopts 2160 Hz PWM dimming and DC dimming technology for enhanced eye protection. The unit is ZReal and SGS Low Blue Light Certified.

nubia has combined BOE's latest OLED smartphone display with its proprietary under-display camera technology that uses a dedicated display chip. This technology debuted in 2020 and is now in its 5th generation, dubbed UDC Ultra Gen 5. The dedicated display chip optimizes the display accurately to the pixel level, with low-grayscale dual adjustment algorithms, high-precision dynamic shadow elimination, and full-scene intelligent display enhancement. More details on how it works with the selfie camera are provided in the camera-dedicated sections of this review. Before we proceed with the presentation of our measurements of the brightness, contrast, and color temperature, we would like to remind you of some specifics of the OLED display panels due to their nature. OLED displays drive more power to each pixel with every decrease in the white area that has to be displayed on the screen. To assess more accurately the brightness of OLED panels, the Average Picture Level (APL) is used. When smartphone brands advertise their peak brightness levels, it is usually measured at 1% or 2% APL. This means that only 1% or 2% of the entire screen displays white and the other 98% is black.

The APL graphs above demonstrate the brightness of the screen of our review unit at two different settings. The red line shows the brightness levels measured in intensive ambient light conditions with activated auto brightness. These are the prerequisites needed to reach peak brightness levels. The green line shows the brightness levels measured in ambient light conditions with inactivated auto brightness.

We measure the brightness at ten APL values for a white area - from 10% to 100% of the display. Under intensive light conditions with auto brightness turned off, at 10% APL, the Z60 Ultra Photographer Edition we test shows a peak brightness of 1194.175 nits. This means that at 1-2% APL, the display will easily hit 1500 nits of peak local brightness as advertised by nubia. At 50% APL (half of the screen is white), the peak brightness drops to 1072.721 nits. At 100% APL (the entire screen displays white), the peak brightness is 973.334 nits and that's the value we use in the chart below to compare the Z60 Ultra Photographer Edition's displays with those of other smartphones.

For starters, the brightness uniformity table above clearly demonstrates a brightness level that's very consistent for an OLED display. It depicts nine values taken on a fully white screen with a maximized brightness level, in normal light conditions, and turned off auto-brightness. The top and bottom one-thirds have an average brightness of 545 nits, while the center delivers an average brightness of 552 nits. The temperature of the white point for all measurements is nailed at the perfect 6500 K level.

Below we publish our display measurements taken in normal light conditions with switched-off auto-brightness in the three available color modes.

Standard Color Mode

In the Standard Color Mode, the CIE diagram shows that the display covers a much wider color space than 100% sRGB. This results in punchier colors at all levels. The color temperature is consistent, gravitating around the 6500 K level from 30% to 100% white screen, and around 6000-6300 K when the display shows less than 30% white.

Soft Color Mode

The Soft Color Mode is for everyone looking for almost perfect 100% sRGB color space coverage with colors appearing as natural as possible. The temperature of the white point gravitates in the perfect 6500 K range.

Colorful Mode

The Colorful Mode offers an even wider color space coverage than the Standard Color Mode. It almost reaches 100% Adobe RGB. Hence, colors will look even more punchier. The temperature of the white point is, logically, increased and gravitates in the 7200 K range.
