Xiaomi Mi 5X Review

Display

For the Mi A1 and Mi 5X, Xiaomi sources display panels from Tianma and Ilitek. While our Mi A1 unit has a Tianma display, the Mi 5X we're reviewing has an Ilitek panel (ili7807). In both cases, this is an LTPS panel with an FHD resolution (1080 x 1920 pixels) and a diagonal size of 5.5 inches. Xiaomi specifies a 1000:1 contrast ratio and a 450 cd/m² peak brightness for the model. LTPS (Low-Temperature PolySilicon) panels are already largely used in smartphones due to several advantages they have compared to the amorphous silicon panels. The main one is their higher carrier mobility. Due to this technology, the screens are thinner, brighter, and consume less power. In addition, the display is GFF fully laminated. GFF stands for glass-to-film-to-film. Such panels employ a two-film sensor that bonds together a PET film, ITO (the Y-axis touch electrodes), OCA (optical clear adhesive), then another PET film, ITO (the X-axis touch electrodes) and OCA. Afterwards, the whole thing is covered with a protective glass. Full lamination increases the sensitivity of the displays and allows them to be even thinner.

The peak brightness of our review unit measures 475 cd/m², which is bright but not enough for comfortable outdoor viewing. The black luminance values are low so the static contrast ratio measures an average of 2200:1, which is impressively high. The temperature of the white point is with the 8000-8300 K range, which is a normal result for a mid-range smartphone. The CIE diagram unveils an almost perfect 100% sRGB coverage. The display has a classic striped sub-pixel architecture. All measurements are made with the default display settings on. More specifically, the Standard colour+Automatic contrast combination. If you choose Increased or Standard contrast, then the Warm and Cold colour options will be unavailable. The display settings also contain advanced reading mode settings.
