OnePlus 6T Review

Design, build and controls

OnePlus 6T retains a flair of subtle elegance which means it is far from being flashy while managing to make an impressive appearance. That's mostly due to the meticulous design concept, use of high-quality materials, and pedantic craftsmanship. As OnePlus loves to state out, most of the improvements on any of its handsets are largely due to the 1+ community to which the company actively listens to. Most probably, this is the main reason why every single OnePlus smartphone has unique details that outline it from the others while keeping up with the company's design philosophy through the years. In terms of design, OnePlus 6T builds upon what has started with the OnePlus 6, and now two of all three colour options of the model use an AG (anti-glare) glass process. The colour options include mercury black (the matte one, available in 8GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB options), mirror black (the glossy one, available in 6GB+128GB and 8GB+128GB options), and thunder purple (matte finish, available in an 8GB+128GB variant in China only). We are reviewing a mercury black unit. The 3D Gorilla Glass 6 on the back is treated in such a way as to create a matte finish that minimizes light reflection. This also makes the colour more transparent. This frosted glass on the back feels a lot like metal - smooth, delicate, and cool. It does not attract fingerprints and smudges like regular glass either. For sure, it is not like the glass on other smartphones. In addition, the thunder purple version is very unique. It not only gradients from light to dark purple but the light reflection forms an "S"-shaped light pattern floating on the backshell. During the announcement of this colour in China, OnePlus said that this is an exploration of technological romanticism. This colour is the most complicated one in the AG glass process using double-cylinder dyeing and it is not only the backshell that's treated with this gradient colour but the frame as well. The mirror black version looks and feels like ceramics, which is achieved by creating six layers of coating that has a beautiful optical effect and creates a delicate texture. All three colour options offer a unique tactile experience. The frame is made of metal and OnePlus uses an anti-fingerprint coating on it and on the entire screen. 1+6T does not have a unibody design. That means that the back and frame are two separate units. The 3D curve on the back and the rear edges of the frame merge beautifully and in terms of handling - it all feels superb. However, on the front, the frame forms a sharp edge only in the areas of the four corners of the display, which might bother some. As long as it concerns water resistance, OnePlus says on its website that the 1+6T has an "improved water and dust resistance" and adds "just don't take it for a swim." Official IP ratings have not been announced as it was with the 1+6. There are no headphone jack and a fingerprint scanner that have to be insulated, so most probably that's what OnePlus means by "improved water and dust resistance". With a width of 74.8 mm, OnePlus 6T is the third narrowest smartphone with a 6.4-inch display after the Find X (74.2 mm) and the R17 Pro (74.6 mm), both from the sister company Oppo. It is even narrower than the 1+6, which has a smaller display and battery. Moreover, with a height of 157.5 mm it is the second shortest smartphone with a display of that size class after the Oppo Find X (156.7 mm). All this is here to say, that we're looking at a very compact handset despite its huge screen. It is worth mentioning that the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 with a 6.39" display is 74.69 mm wide and 157.89 mm high, while the Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design has a 6.3-inch screen and is 72.3 mm wide and 157.8 mm high. OnePlus 6T is the second thickest smartphone with a 6.4-inch display and a 3700 mAh battery. Actually, among devices with a display of that size, 3700 mAh is the second largest capacity for a battery and the only other smartphone that currently has such a combination of screen and battery is the Find X, which is even thicker - 9.6 mm due to its sliding structure. The 1+6T is also one of the heaviest devices in this display and battery size class weighing 185 grammes. When you look at the OnePlus 6T for the first time, it is obvious that many design elements from Oppo and Vivo flagship devices have trickled down to this smartphone. And this is not a surprise, as all three are backed by one and the same company - BBK Electronics, though OnePlus seems to stand out as a more independent unit. One such element is the waterdrop notch and let's admit it - it is much better than the huge notch areas on standard notched displays. You also have the option to hide it. The new model offers an improved screen-to-body ratio compared to the previous one - 85.9% for the 1+6T against 84% for the 1+6. Despite being very small, the notch manages to house the front-facing shooter, a tiny slit for the earpiece and the light/proximity sensor. No LED notification light. Despite the fact that the 1+6T has to meet higher antenna requirements as it supports 4G bands in more than 200 countries, the manufacturer has managed to make the chin thinner than the one on the previous generation. The navigation bar is onscreen only. You can opt for it to be docked, hideable or completely removed and use onscreen gestures instead. The gesture-only navigation has been introduced for the first time with the Elephone U and Elephone U Pro. However, Android 9.0 Pie takes that to another level, so it is more advanced on the OnePlus 6T. More on that in the software section of this review. The back of the OnePlus 6T features a dual camera module vertically aligned in the upper middle of the handset followed by a dual-LED flash and the 1+ logo. The top frame houses a single microphone hole, while the bottom one features a bottom-firing speaker placed behind a 5-hole speaker grille, a USB Type-C 2.0 port with OTG support, and another 5-hole grille that covers the main microphone. The buttons positions are the same as the ones on the 1+6. The Alert Slider is placed on the right frame above the power button and still allows you to toggle between the three usual modes Ring, Vibrate, and Silent. It has a textured surface for ease of use. The card tray is on the left frame and can house two Nano-SIM cards. No storage expansion on the 1+6T, sorry. Below the tray, you will see the volume rocker. Together with the power button, it provides excellent tactile experience. Actually, having the two buttons on the opposite sides is very comfortable.
