OnePlus 6T Review

Primary camera, sample photos and videos

OnePlus 6T retains the dual rear camera setup of the previous model but has made software optimizations that, in our opinion, improve the camera performance. The main shooter is equipped with a 16-megapixel Sony IMX519 Exmor RS sensor - a customized solution from Sony that has entered the market only recently. It has a 1.22 µm pixel size and is coupled with a 6-element lens with an f/1.7 aperture, OIS and EIS. The shooter makes photos with a resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels and is capable of shooting 4K videos at 30 fps and 60 fps, 1080p videos at 30 fps and 60 fps, slow-motion videos - 720p at 480 fps and 1080p at 240 fps, and time-lapse videos. Shooting 4K videos at 30 fps is aided by EIS. 4K videos at 60 fps do not have EIS but have OIS. EIS programmatically compensates for higher movement amplitudes during walking, for example. OIS helps for small jitters and shaking hands. It cannot compensate for shaking that is due to movements with big amplitudes. The auxiliary camera is not telephoto and shoots only in combination with the first camera under Portrait mode. It has a 20-megapixel Sony IMX376 Exmor RS sensor with a 1/2.78" size and an f/1.7 lens. The same setup is used in the auxiliary rear camera of OnePlus 5T. The shooters are aided by a dual-LED flash and a hybrid AF that combines contrast and phase detection AF. It looks like this setup performs better compared to the camera combo on OnePlus 5T. The Portrait mode yields fine portraits and the blurred background does look more natural than conventional solutions. The usual oversharpening of the edges is now milder and colour reproduction is more accurate.

Secondary camera, sample photos

For the front-facing camera OnePlus 6T uses the same 16-megapixel Sony IMX371 Exmor RS sensor with 1.0 μm pixel size used in OnePlus 5T, OnePlus 5 and nubia Z17. It is coupled with an f/2.0 lens with a focal length (35 mm equivalent) of 20 mm. The photos are with a resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels and the video resolutions include 720p and 1080p at 30 fps. On 1+6T, this sensor+lens setup works very well. If you manage to keep the proper distance for the camera to focus well, you will get quality selfies. The front camera is used for the Face Unlock feature of OnePlus 6T. It works impressively fast and is definitely a very convenient way of unlocking the device.

Camera App

OnePlus 6T arrives with heavy optimization of the camera software that includes independently developed night scene, HDR, jitter, noise reduction, and enhanced analysis algorithms. Multi-frame processing achieves more detailed and clearer photos. AI is used in background blurring while shooting portraits and scene recognition that adjusts the brightness, contrast, saturation, etc. The Nightscape feature works through detail optimization, multi-frame stability, and noise reduction. It is created especially for shooting cityscapes at night. Studio lighting uses advanced face detection and superior edge detection to dynamically tone shadows and highlights on the subject's face while shooting portraits. OnePlus cooperated with photographer Kevin Abosch on this feature. The camera app on the OnePlus 6T is in its essence the same as the one on the previous two models. However, there are some noticeable changes. The main screen contains a circular shutter button at the bottom with four (instead of three) shooting modes listed above it - the default Photo, Video, Portrait and the new - Night. There's a Google Lens icon to the far left of the reel. Above them is the icon with the digital zoom level, which can reach 8 times zoom. If you swipe up from the arrow there, you will access the full list of shooting modes, including Slow Motion, Pro Mode, Time Lapse, and Panorama. The camera settings icon is now placed in a circle in the list with shooting modes.
The top of the screen contains the self-timer, aspect ratio and flash toggles. The HDR one is removed. When you choose Portrait mode, the device employs both of its rear cameras so it creates a portrait with a natural-looking blurred background. This mode works with a beautification filter, which you can fine tune with a slider. When shooting in Video mode, you can select the resolution from the icon in the top left corner (720p or 1080p at 30 fps, 1080p at 60 fps, 4K at 30 fps/60 fps) as well as switch on/off the flash. Accessing the Portrait and Video mode can also be done by swiping to the left and right, respectively. The Pro Mode allows you to adjust manually the ISO (100-3200), white balance (2300K-7500K), shutter-speed (1/8000-30 s), focus type and exposure compensation (-2 to +2). Simply tap on the corresponding button to open the modification wheel of any given setting, and turn the wheel to adjust it. All are set to Auto by default. You can also choose shooting in RAW format under the Pro Mode from the corresponding toggle at the top of the screen. The camera settings include toggles for store location data, shutter sound, quick capture, invert photo, picture information. The histogram and horizontal reference line are especially useful. You can also activate a grid if you find it a useful tool while shooting and add a "Shot on OnePlus" watermark. On the 6T, OnePlus has removed the "Rear camera beauty mode" toggle as it is available on the main screen and has added "Manual HDR control" and "Auto Night Scene Detection" toggles.
The interface of the front camera is the same as the one of the rear shooter. However, unlike the 1+6, 1+6T does support Portrait mode and Night mode. Its beautification feature is bundled with the default Photo mode. With the front shooter, you can make 720p or 1080p videos at 30 fps. The camera settings are identical to those of the rear camera. Photo editing options differ depending on which app you're going to use to open a photo. The Gallery app has an extensive editor that allows you to adjust the exposure, saturation, contrast, highlights, shadows, add a filter, adjust the position by straightening, rotating, flipping. You can also doodle the photo choosing a colour and brush thickness as well as add slogan, text, copyright text, location data. If you open a photo with the Photos app, you can add filters, adjust the light, colours and pop features along with the position. Its last editing option redirects to the editing menu of the Gallery app.
