Samsung introduces the Infinity Flex Display and One UI at the SDC 2018

8 November 2018, 03:12:18

Samsung introduces the Infinity Flex Display and One UI at the SDC 2018During the first day of its developers' conference (SDC 2018), Justin Denison, Samsung's SVP of Mobile Product Marketing, introduced Samsung's vision for the next generation of mobile displays: the Infinity Flex Display. Its foldable design offers users the best of both worlds: a compact smartphone that unfolds to reveal a large, immersive display for multitasking and viewing content. He showcased a foldable OLED panel which will be used on Samsung's upcoming fully foldable smartphone. It is said that the smaller unit on the outside features a 4.58-inch standard AMOLED display with a 840 x 1960 resolution. The big, foldable AMOLED display on the inside is said to have a 7.3-inch diagonal size and a resolution of 1536 x 2152 pixels in a pixel density that's consistent with the one of the smaller screen. The news that Samsung is working with Google to develop a customized UI for this new form factor has been confirmed by Glen Murphy, Director and Head of Android UX at Google, who discussed his company's deep partnership with Samsung and announced that Android is officially adding support for the Infinity Flex Display's foldable form factor. The new interface is dubbed One UI. According to Samsung, it has a clean and minimalistic design created especially for a more natural and comfortable one-handed use. It will be used both on foldable and non-foldable Samsung smartphones. When you use the smartphone in its folded state, it will look and operate like a regular compact mobile. When you use it in the unfolded state, it will offer more-tablet like experience. The UI has been optimized to offer simultaneous work with up to three apps open at one and the same time. With the creation of the Infinity Flex Display, Samsung definitely makes a huge stride ahead in technological innovation by solving various challenges. For starters, it has created an entirely new polarizer for the display, which is 45% thinner than the one used up to now. Ultimately, this makes the Infinity Flex thinner than current OLED units. Secondly, Samsung ensures a longer lifespan of the display which will be folded and unfolded thousands of times by creating a foldable soft adhesive which keeps the display components together while allowing them to bend. Finally, instead of using glass for protection, Samsung employs an advanced composite polymer that provides the flexibility and toughness needed.Source
