Sprint and LG to launch the first 5G smartphone in the US in the first half of 2019Sprint has announced that it has partnered with LG Electronics USA to bring the first 5G smartphone in the US in the first half of 2019. The device has not been detailed except that it will be "innovative" and is created for "the country's first mobile 5G network". Sprint plans on launching its 5G network in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix and Washington, D.C. The company uses the Massive MIMO technology which is capable of delivering up to 10 times the capacity of current LTE systems.

"Sprint is moving fast on the road to 5G and we are thrilled to announce the first 5G smartphone with the innovative team at LG," said Dr. John Saw, Sprint chief technology officer. "LG has done tremendous work developing technical designs that enable us to be among the first movers in mobile 5G. Today’s announcement brings us one step closer to putting a beautifully-designed advanced 5G smartphone in our customer’s hands. And we’re excited to revolutionize the mobile industry as we dramatically improve the way Sprint customers work, play and stay connected."

"LG has been working side-by-side with Sprint for nearly 20 years, and we are looking forward to expanding this partnership with 5G," said William Cho, LG Electronics North America President and CEO. Building on LG’s legacy of innovation, our teams are enthusiastic about partnering with Sprint’s 5G experts to bring next-generation mobile to market in the U.S., while continuing to evolve LG’s best-in-class design elements for Sprint customers."

And some background on Sprint: it is the fourth largest mobile phone service provider in the US, behind Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Recently, the company has been trying to persuade the US antitrust regulator to approve its merger with the larger rival T-Mobile US, which involves an amount of about $26 billion. The two companies said the merger will help them build next-generation wireless networks faster. The next generation of wireless networks is expected to eventually pave the way for the deployment of new technologies such as autonomous vehicles. Sprint's director of product development, John Tudhope, said in an interview that LG phones will be customized according to the 5G network in the Sprint program and will only be compatible with T-Mobile's existing 4G network. He also said that Sprint will continue to use content as a way to reflect the values of the 5G network.Source
