Ming-Chi Kuo: iPhone 16 Pro will have periscope and ultra-wide lensions, iPhone 17 with front camera upgrade

Ming-Chi Kuo: iPhone 16 Pro will have periscope and ultra-wide lensions, iPhone 17 with front camera upgradeMing-Chi Kuo has shared the latest insight on the upcoming iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 Pro models. For starters, the iPhone 17 will have an upgraded selfie camera. It will go from a 12MP sensor with a 5-element lens (found on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16) to a 24MP sensor and a 6-element lens. This will definitely improve the revenue of the lens supplier - Genius - in 2H25 because the unit price for 6P lenses is 100-120% higher than that of 5P lenses.

Secondly, Genius verified that the iPhone 16 Pro periscope lens is progressing smoothly, and it is expected to start shipping from the end of 2Q24/early 3Q24 and significantly contribute to the company's 2H24 revenue of more than NT$3 billion. The replacement demand of the two iPhone 16 Pros is expected to increase by 5-10% compared with the iPhone 15 Pro series due to the need for larger screens, so even if the periscope price is reduced by 10-15% and Da Liguang is still the main supplier, the high unit price periscope of the iPhone 16 Pro can still significantly contribute to Genius's 2H24 revenue and profit.

Finally, the ultra-wide-angle lens of the iPhone 16 Pro series is expected to increase further the Genius profitability. The iPhone 16 Pro series ultra-wide camera will be upgraded to a 48MP/0.7um/(1/2.6") (vs. 12MP/1.0um/(1/3.6")) of the iPhone 15 Pro), with an expected output specification of 12MP and significantly improved image quality. The iPhone 16 Pro's ultra-wide-angle lens maintains the 6P lens design, so the unit price increase is limited, but due to the continuous improvement of production yield, the profit of Genius's ultra-wide-angle lens is expected to grow further.Source
