The Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018 focuses strongly on 5G, the Snapdragon 855 is teased

4 December 2018, 02:58:25

The Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018 focuses strongly on 5G, the Snapdragon 855 is teasedDuring the first day of Qualcomm's Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018, everything evolves around 5G technologies - "the next generation of mobile wireless". 5G networks should offer drastic improvement in performance, including 100x increase in capacity, 10x increase in responsiveness, 100x increase in density, peak speeds (multi-gigabits per second), and reliability. This will open the door to solutions for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X), and mobile extended reality (XR). 5G will be rolled out, starting in the first half of 2019. Next year, 5G devices and networks will be presented and deployed across the U.S., Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and China, with deployments in sub-6 GHz and mmWave. By 2020-21, 5G is expected to be deployed in India and Latin America.

Qualcomm announced the main bearer of its current 5G solutions - the Snapdragon X50 5G modem and is complemented by the mmWave modules comprising the QTM052 mmWave antenna module family which were announced back in July. The Snapdragon X50 5G modem is coupled with up to 4 QTM052 mmWave antenna modules supporting features such as beam forming, beam steering and beam tracking that are created to improve mmWave signal range and coverage. The modem supports up to 5 gigabits per second download speeds. It is compatible with Snapdragon chipsets that use a Gigabit-class LTE modem providing multi-mode 4G/5G capability via dual connectivity. This answers the question of how smartphone models that are already announced (such as the Mi MIX 3 by Xiaomi) can be launched with 5G connectivity option next year.

Alex Katouzian, SVP and GM of Mobile for Qualcomm Technologies, teased the Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform. It is the world's first commercial 5G mobile platform with sub-6 GHz and mmWave support, 4th-generation on-device AI engine, true 4K HDR video capture, cinema-grade photography capabilities, and our 3D Sonic Sensor - all in a 7-nanometer chip. "The Snapdragon 855 will define the premium tier in 2019.", he said. The new chipset will be officially presented tomorrow.Source
