Xiaomi introduced the Mi MIX Alpha - its second concept smartphone with a wrap-around display

24 September 2019, 04:02:01

Xiaomi introduced the Mi MIX Alpha - its second concept smartphone with a wrap-around displayXiaomi has just showcased the Mi MIX Alpha. This is the company's second concept smartphone after the very first Xiaomi Mi MIX. It looks stunning with a wrap-around display as the screen goes from the front all around the sides to the back, leaving a thin vertical strip on the rear for the placement of the camera module. Xiaomi specifies 180.6% screen-to-body ratio.

The status bar is moved to the vertical sides of the handset. The top is free of clutter. Lei Jun explained that the device uses an in-display sound system instead of a classic earpiece. The same technology is used to produce ultrasonic waves in order to detect range/distance and replace the classic proximity sensor. The bottom bezel is only 2.15 mm thin - almost invisible.

The Mi MIX Alpha is a 5G smartphone equipped with a Snapdragon X20 5G modem that supports three 5G NSA bands - n41, n78, and n79 - just like the Mi 9 Pro 5G announced a couple of hours ago. In order to solve the problem with antenna integration, Xiaomi has used the LCP integrated antenna design that allows convenient placement under the glass on the side of the handset without interfering with the signal. Moreover, there are pressure-sensitive buttons on the side.

The front camera placement can be quite a predicament as well. The Mi MIX Alpha does not need a "front" camera, you simply use the main camera for selfies and use the screen on the back. Turn around the device and take advantage of the advanced camera features offered by the rear module. The sides of the display serve as notification lights. When you charge the phone - it lights up all around. Gaming is ever more immersive, so is reading on such a screen.

The Mi MIX Alpha is the first smartphone in the world with a 108MP camera. It takes photos with a resolution of 12032 x 9024 pixels. The Samsung sensor has an optical format of 1/1.33" and is paired to an f/1.69 lens. The camera is optically stabilized. It is adjoined by a 20MP wide-angle shooter with a 117-degree wide angle, f/2.2 aperture and a 1/2.8" sensor size. Finally, there's a 12MP third camera with Dual Phase Detection, f/2.0 aperture and a 1/2.55" sensor size.

Lei Jun elaborates on the high-end materials used in the Mi MIX Alpha. The top and lower frame are made of titanium alloy - it is tough and light. The strip on the back is made of black precision ceramics. This strip protrudes from the back of the device and the camera module part is covered with sapphire glass.

Finally, there are some basic specifications shown such as Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset, 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM, 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage, 4050 mAh battery, 40W fast charging.
