Android 17 marks a major shift toward smarter, more adaptive devices

Add DeviceSpecifications as a preferred source on GoogleGoogle has officially unveiled Android 17, a release that pushes the operating system into a new era of intelligence, flexibility, and privacy. Rather than focusing on flashy visual changes, Android 17 reshapes how apps, devices, and AI work together, creating a more fluid experience across phones, tablets, and foldables.
At the center of the update is a deeper integration of artificial intelligence. Android 17 allows apps to expose small, focused capabilities that AI assistants can use directly. This means users will increasingly be able to complete tasks - such as drafting a note, editing an image, or starting a message - without manually navigating through apps. Google describes this as a step toward an operating system that actively helps users accomplish things, instead of simply hosting applications.
The update also places strong emphasis on large‑screen devices. As Android tablets and foldables continue to grow in popularity, Google is tightening requirements to ensure apps resize smoothly, adapt to different orientations, and behave predictably in windowed modes. The goal is to make Android feel consistent whether it’s running on a compact phone or a laptop‑style device.
Multitasking receives a noticeable upgrade as well. Any app can now be turned into a floating bubble, allowing users to keep tasks accessible while working elsewhere. On tablets and foldables, these bubbles can be organized in a dedicated bar for quick switching. Picture‑in‑picture windows become fully interactive, turning them from passive video frames into usable mini‑apps.
Android 17 also introduces a new continuity feature that lets users move activities between devices. A task started on a phone can be resumed on a tablet with a single tap, and the system can even bridge the gap between an app and its web version. This brings Android closer to the seamless cross‑device experience long associated with desktop ecosystems.
Performance improvements run throughout the release. Android 17 manages memory more intelligently, reduces stutters in animations, and prevents apps from consuming excessive resources. These changes operate behind the scenes, but they contribute to a noticeably smoother and more stable experience.
Privacy remains a central pillar. Instead of granting broad, permanent permissions, users can now share only the specific data an app needs - such as a single contact or a single photo. Location access can be limited to a single session, and apps must request permission before interacting with devices on a local network. Android 17 also introduces new security measures designed to withstand future threats, including post‑quantum encryption.
Media capabilities see meaningful upgrades. The system supports improved HDR video, a new RAW photo format for more detailed images, and a modern video codec that delivers higher quality at smaller file sizes. Manufacturers can integrate their own advanced camera modes more easily, and audio recording quality has been refined.
Accessibility receives attention through better support for modern Bluetooth hearing aids. Android 17 recognizes them as a distinct device type and allows users to control which sounds are routed to the aids and which remain on the phone’s speakers.
For developers, Android 17 marks a turning point. Google is shifting the ecosystem toward Jetpack Compose, its modern UI toolkit, and future Android features will be built with Compose at the forefront. For users, this means apps will gradually become more adaptive, more consistent, and visually cleaner.
