Snapdragon 855 details leak together with the new Qualcomm 3D Sonic under-display fingerprint sensorSix hours ago TechCrunch has published official data about the release of the Snapdragon 855 (confirming that's the commercial name of the product) and Qualcomm's new ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor. The article is already down and we cannot find its cached version but managed to get the data beforehand. The official announcement of the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform is scheduled for Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit which will be held from today through December 6th in Maui, Hawaii. TechCrunch unveils that the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform is "the world's first commercial mobile platform supporting multi-gigabit 5G". It will be built after the 7nm process and will have a dedicated NPU ("multi-core AI engine") providing up to 3 times better performance compared to previous solutions. Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is also optimized for gaming, computational photography, video recording, and augmented reality.

According to reports, the Snapdragon 855 will use three CPU clusters, including four 1.78GHz energy-saving cores, three 2.42GHz high-end cores and one top performance core (gold) clocked at 2.84 GHz, but Qualcomm has not confirmed that. The graphics unit will be an Adreno 640, which of course will bring performance improvements again. In addition to the integrated Snapdragon X24 LTE modem, the Snapdragon X50 5G modem will provide 5G support. Of course, 5G will be the biggest focus of the summit and it is expected that At&t and Verizon are showcasing their 5G networks in Maui as well.

In addition to that, TechCrunch shares information about the new Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor - an enhanced ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor. The new feature here is that its sensitivity has been enhanced so the sensor will work even you have installed a screen protector or the screen is very dirty. Not surprisingly, next year Xiaomi, Samsung, LG, HTC, Motorola, Google, Sony, One Plus, Oppo and Vivo will use the Snapdragon 855 in a variety of high-end smartphones next year.
