Samsung unveils the 200MP ISOCELL HP3 image sensor for mobiles

The 200MP Samsung HP3 ISOCELL image sensor for mobile devices has been unveiled. Samples are sent out to smartphone manufacturers and production is planned to commence later this year. The sensor has a 1/1.4" optical format and a 0.56 μm - that's 12% smaller in size compared to the 0.64μm size of the previous generation. As a result, the camera module's size can be reduced by 20% to fit thin and light mobile devices. The Samsung HP3 supports Super QPD technology for faster and more accurate autofocus. This means that it uses a single lens on 4 adjacent pixels to detect phase differences in horizontal and vertical directions. The sensor supports 8K at 30 fps or 4K at 120 fps video recording. Samsung's Tetra-pixel technology can convert 0.56 μm pixels to 1.12 μm or 2.24 μm ones for 50MP or 12.5MP photos. The Smart ISO Pro technology enables the sensor to express images in over 4- trillion colors (14-bit color depth), 64 times more colors than the predecessor’s 68 billion (12-bit). Furthermore, by supporting staggered HDR along with Smart-ISO Pro, the ISOCELL HP3 can switch between the two solutions depending on the filming environment to produce high-quality HDR images.
