The chip debuts in the Samsung Galaxy A57 5G and brings significant upgrades across CPU, GPU, AI processing, imaging, and connectivity. According to Samsung Semiconductor, the Exynos 1680 is "built for a more immersive and fluid mobile on‑device AI experience," offering major improvements in speed and power efficiency.
The Exynos 1680 uses a revised octa‑core tri‑cluster layout consisting of one Cortex‑A720 prime core, four Cortex‑A720 mid‑cores, and three Cortex‑A520 efficiency cores. This 1+4+3 configuration replaces one of the previous generation’s efficiency cores with a mid‑core, resulting in stronger multi‑core performance and smoother multitasking. Benchmarks show noticeable gains in sustained workloads such as video encoding and app switching.
Samsung continues its partnership with AMD, equipping the Exynos 1680 with the Xclipse 550 GPU based on RDNA 3 architecture. The GPU features a 2WGP + 2RB configuration and delivers up to 16% better graphics performance than its predecessor. This enables smoother gameplay, higher frame rates, and support for Full HD+ displays up to 144Hz—an impressive capability for a mid‑range chipset.
AI performance receives a major upgrade thanks to a new NPU capable of up to 19.6 TOPS. This allows the processor to handle advanced tasks such as live translation, enhanced photo processing, and intelligent system optimization without relying heavily on cloud services. Samsung highlights that the vector engine inside the NPU improves responsiveness and efficiency for complex AI workloads.
The Exynos 1680's ISP supports ultra‑high‑resolution sensors up to 200MP, along with improved noise reduction and AI‑powered image enhancement. This results in clearer low‑light photos, richer detail, and more accurate color reproduction. The chipset also supports 4K video recording at 60fps and advanced codecs including HEVC, H.264, VP9, and VP8.
The processor supports LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage, enabling faster app loading and smoother multitasking. Connectivity upgrades include Wi‑Fi 6E, 5G with download speeds up to 5.1Gbps, and Bluetooth 6.1 - the first time this standard appears in an Exynos chip.
Manufactured on Samsung's advanced 4nm EUV node, the Exynos 1680 achieves better thermal efficiency and sustained performance. This ensures longer battery life and more consistent performance during gaming, streaming, and heavy multitasking.
