Snapdragon 855 is officially announced, OnePlus 2019 will be the first to get itAt the second day of the Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018 in Maui today, Alex Katouzian, SVP and GM, Mobile at Qualcomm Technologies took the stage to finally present the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform. His first guest on stage was Pete Lau - CEO of OnePlus. After a brief overview of the cooperation history between Qualcomm and OnePlus, Pete Lau said that the first smartphone that will arrive with a Snapdragon 855 chipset will be the OnePlus 2019 flagship. After that, a huge part of the keynote was about the history of mobile network development, 5G mobile networks and the new opportunities they open. Durga Malladi, SVO & GM 4G/5G took the stage to discuss the connectivity capabilities of the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform. For starters, the new platform supports multi-gigabit wireless connectivity. It is also the world's first to mmWave and sub-6. The Snapdragon 855 houses the world's first 2 Gbps LTE modem dubbed Snapdragon X24 which supports Cat. 20 speeds, 7x Carrier Aggregation. It is a combination of 20 LTE layers allowing 90% of the operators worldwide to achieve multi-gigabit LTE. The mobile platform is also the world's first with an integrated Wi-Fi 6-ready solution for mobile with high capacity, advanced security and improved power efficiency. Not only this, Qualcomm introduced the world's first 60 GHz Wi-Fi it allows to get 10 Gbps and wire-equivalent latency. Travis Lanier, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm, took the stage to present the Snapdragon 855 processing power. It is built after the 7nm TSMC process and offers a 45% faster CPU and 25% faster GPU compared to the Snapdragon 845. The Adreno 640 GPU is a Qualcomm custom design. It is the first to mobile devices with Vulkan 1.1 support, features an integrated microcontroller for power management and offers the lowest driver overhead for less CPU power. The Kryo 485 CPU is based the Arm Cortex Technology. It has three clusters, as rumoured earlier. The first cluster consists of only one CPU core, which is the highest performing one and is dubbed Prime Core as it ticks at 2.84GHz. The second cluster houses 3x Performance Cores clocked at 2.42GHz cores. The third cluster features 4x Efficiency Cores clocked at 1.80GHz. The Hexagon 690 processor is again Qualcomm designed and offers a powerful combination of classic DSP and AI processing with enhanced security. It has a Tensor Accelerator designed by Qualcomm and dedicated to AI, specifically for multidimensional and integrated nonlinear functions. The 4th Gen. AI Engine is being presented now. It is optimized for various frameworks and offers optimized neural processing. Qualcomm said it has invested heavily in Google's neural network API. As a result, users get 3x increase in Snapdragon AI performance and doubles the AI performance of the competition. Of course, ultimately this leads to enhanced augmented reality (AR) experiences, intelligent object and text recognition, etc. Qualcomm has also collaborated with SenseTime again to created the first AI-based, payment-grade, 3D face authentication that uses a TOF sensor, which is combined with the AI engine and secure Hexagon structure. Snapdragon 855 also integrates the world's first computer-vision ISP - the Spectra 380. It supports advanced night time/low light shooting, 4K HDR video recording, and triple camera setups with up to 3x optical zoom. It also helps object recognition and tracking (think Google Lens and similar services) and supports 6 degrees of body freedom tracking and room scaling for VR headset gaming. Additional features and capabilities of the Spectra 380 ISP include depth sensing at 60 fps (live bokeh even when the object is moving during video), up to 4x power saving, CV stabilization and extreme speed boost. You can also do real-time object replacement. It also integrates the first HEIF accelerator for capture and playback. Moreover, for the first time on a mobile device HDR 10+ for video is supported. Elite gaming, XR and mobile entertainment seem to wrap up the second-day keynote of the Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018.
