Xiaomi MIX Fold 3 is now official - the new-generation foldable device

Xiaomi MIX Fold 3 has been unveiled during Lei Jun's annual speech. The device uses an improved design that makes it the thinnest foldable on the market. It has a depth of 10.96 mm when folded and only 5.26 mm when unfolded. The model has an ultra-thin metal frame with a brushed metal finish, four curved edges, and two finishes - Gold and Moonshadow black. Both are made of ceramic with the black version featuring a leather-like pattern.
The hinge design is the most important feature of a foldable smartphone and the MIX Fold 3 has a Xiaomi proprietary hinge design. This design incorporates a 3-element connecting rod structure that acts like a clockwork. 14 micro-hinges and a total of 198 elements complement these three main elements of the hinge. All this results in improved sturdiness and more efficient folding and unfolding. Xiaomi has used ultra-high-strength steel that can withstand 1800 MPa pressure. Carbon ceramic steel has also been used for some of the elements. It is four times stronger yet allowing to achieve a more compact and delicate structure.
With this hinge, the MIX Fold 3 has passed the TUV Rheinland Extreme Folding certification tests. This means it can be folded 500,000 times without a problem. In addition, the new hinge allows to achieve an ultra-flat screen surface when unfolded. It also supports stops from 45 to 135 degrees so you can use the phone in landscape mode as a mini notebook. Finally, if you drop the device on the hinge there's an inner protection mechanism for the inner display unlike foldable with a traditional waterdrop hinge.
Xiaomi MIX Fold 3 has an 8.03-inch E6 OLED inner display by Samsung with a resolution of 2160 x 1912 px. It can achieve 1300 cd/m² in high brightness mode and peak brightness reaches 2600 cd/m². The screen supports up to a 120Hz refresh rate and is covered with a 0.03 mm UTG glass while protection of the outer display is handled by a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The big display supports Hover Mode and Smart Multi Task mode.
Xiaomi engineers have also created a MIX Fold 3 version with a composite-fiber finish - an aerospace-grade composite that's 36 times stronger than glass. Lei Jun ran a demonstration of a 5 mm ball bearing that was shot with a speed of 200 km/h towards a rear shell made of this material and it withstood the hit. That's how strong this composite-fiber finish is.
The MIIX Fold 3 is based on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset which is aided by a top-notch cooling system that spreads on an area of 10943 sq.mm. The smartphone packs a 4800 mAh dual-cell battery aided by three Xiaomi Surge chipsets. The battery uses a carbon anode that increases battery life and durability. Another feature that saves battery life is the Pol-less Plus technology of the inner display which removes the polarizer layer. This can save up to 52% of battery life. consumed by the inner display. The battery supports 67W fast charging and 50W wireless charging.
And we've arrived at the camera department. Developed jointly by Xiaomi and Leiica, the camera department of the MIX Fold 3 comprises four units with Leica Summicron lenses. The 50MP main camera uses a 6p+1g-element lens with an f/1.77 aperture and a Sony IMX800 sensor with OIS. There's a 12MP ultra-wide unit with a 15 mm focal length equivalent, a 5-element lens, a 120-degree FoV, and an f/2.2 aperture. The other two cameras are telephoto ones with 10MP sensors and OIS. The first uses a 5-element lens with an f/2.0 aperture and a 75mm focal length equivalent, while the second uses a 4-element lens with an f/2.92 aperture and a 115 mm focal length equivalent.
Xiaomi MIX Fold 3 is priced at CNY 8999 for the 12GB+256GB version - the same price as the one of the MIX Fold 2. The 16GB+512GB variant costs CNY 9999 and the 16GB+1TB version is priced at CNY 10999.
