Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 complete specificationsYesterday, Qualcomm unveiled its latest top-notch chipset for mobile devices but saved the detailed specifications for the second day of its tech summit.

The Snapdragon 888 features a tri-cluster octa-core Kryo 680 CPU. The top core is the new ARM Cortex-X1 which has been customized by Qualcomm and is closed at 2.84GHz. Compared to a Cortex-A87 core, the Cortex-X1 has a double L1 and L2 cache capacity, a double SIMD hardware, and 33% improvement in performance. The second cluster comprises of three Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.4GHz. The third cluster includes four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. 4MB of L3 cache and 3MB of system cache are allotted to the Kryo 680 CPU which is 25% more powerful and 25% more power-efficient compared to the previous generation.

The Snapdragon 888 also features an Adreno 660 GPU which should provide a 35% increase in rendering performance 20% increase in power efficiency. It supports Variable Rate Shading (VRS) that allows shaders to work on two or four pixels at a time, instead of just one. As a result performance during gaming can be increased up to 30%. Another interesting feature is the Game Quick Touch that reduces touch latency by up to 20% and is supported up to 120 fps. The GPU also supports 10-bit HDR and sub-pixel rendering.

The Snapdragon 888 arrives with three image signal processors (ISPs) called Qualcomm Spectra 580 ISP which increases photography capabilities and performance. For example, you can snap 120 photos with a resolution of 12MP per second. You can record and play 4K videos at 120 fps. HDR10+ and Dolby Vision video recording is also supported along with shooting 10-bit HDR photos in HEIF format. Switching between the different types of cameras is also quicker and smoother.

The Snapdragon 888 is equipped with 6th Gen AI engine featuring the new Hexagon 780 enabling 26 TOPS. It is also more power-efficient which is further enhanced by the 2nd Gen Sensing Hub. The the Snapdragon X60 5G modem is responsible for the connectivity capabilities of the chipset. It supports sub-6 and mmWave 5G, Wi-Fi 6 and 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, etc.

Snapdragon 888 includes many security measures for keeping on-device user data private including Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit, Qualcomm Trusted Execution Environment, and support for Qualcomm Wireless Edge Services - a cloud service that Snapdragon can interact with for apps and services to measure the security of the devices and its wireless connections in real-time for secure experiences. Snapdragon 888 features a new Type-1 Hypervisor, which provides a new way to secure and isolate data between apps and multiple operating systems on the same device. Additionally, in collaboration with Truepic, Snapdragon 888 can capture cryptographically-sealed photos that are compliant with the Content Authenticity Initiative standard, an open standard for digital content provenance led by Adobe.
