Add DeviceSpecifications as a preferred source on GoogleUnihertz has unveiled the 8849 Tank 5, a device that pushes rugged‑phone engineering into ultra‑flagship territory with a massive battery, high‑end MediaTek silicon, advanced connectivity, and an upgraded built‑in laser projector. Designed for users who need extreme durability without sacrificing modern performance, the Tank 5 arrives as one of the most feature‑dense rugged smartphones released this year.
The phone's construction immediately sets it apart. Its metal, polycarbonate, and TPU chassis is certified to IP68 and MIL‑STD‑810H standards, and its footprint is unmistakably oversized at 87 x 177.1 x 33.8 mm with a weight of 700 grams. The front is dominated by a 6.73‑inch AMOLED display with a 1440 x 3200 px resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, Panda Glass protection, and peak local brightness reaching 3000 nits. Color coverage spans 100% sRGB and 100% DCI‑P3, giving the Tank 5 a level of visual fidelity rarely seen in the rugged category.
Inside, the device runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 9400e platform built on a 4 nm process, pairing a Cortex‑X4 prime core at 3.4 GHz with additional X4 and A720 cores for a total of eight CPU cores and an Immortalis‑G720 MC12 GPU. It ships with 18 GB of LPDDR5/5X RAM, expandable virtually, and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage with microSD expansion. Android 16 comes preinstalled, supported by Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, GPS with multi‑system positioning, and a full suite of 4G and 5G bands including n77 and n78.
Photography is handled by a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN1 main camera with PDAF, HDR, and 4K video at 30 fps. A matching 50MP telephoto module delivers 3x optical zoom with OIS, while a third 50MP Night Vision camera uses four infrared lights for true low‑light capture. The front camera uses a 32MP OmniVision OV32B40 sensor with f/1.7 optics and 1080p video recording.
One of the 8849 Tank 5 signature features is its integrated TI DLP laser projector, capable of projecting a 2K image at up to 220 lumens with 4‑point keystone correction and laser‑ranging autofocus up to four meters. The device also includes RGB camping lights, warning lights, dual PTT buttons, and a 1027‑level flat vibration motor for enhanced haptics.
Powering everything is a colossal 17,600 mAh Li‑Polymer battery with 20 V / 6 A fast charging. The phone's nominal voltage is 7.74 V, with a maximum of 8.90 V, and the battery is non‑removable as expected for a rugged design. Audio is delivered through a Smart PA AWINIC 1115W loudspeaker with a 3.5 cc cavity and dual noise‑canceling microphones, complemented by a waterproof receiver and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Unihertz will open the pre-order books for the 8849 Tank 5 on June 10. The pre-sale period will run until July 10. During that time, the Tank 5 will be priced at USD 899. After July 10th, the regular retail price will return to USD 999.
