Battery Tests

Cubot KingKong 8 is powered by a 10600 mAh Li-Pol battery with 18W charging support. Coupled with a lower-resolution display and a power-efficient chipset, we expect to see very good battery life results. All battery tests we run on the devices we review are developed by us and performed with the screen of the device being calibrated to 200 cd/m2. Battery-saving features are disabled.
Charging (3 hours and 27 minutes)
The battery of our review unit charged in full for 3 hours and 27 minutes with the provided USB cable and charger. There are three visible stages in the charging process. The first continues for 1 hour and 50 minutes, during which time, the battery regains 50% of its charge. The second stage continues for 1 hour and during that time the battery regains another 37% of its charge. The last 13% require 37 minutes to complete at a slightly slower charging speed. The battery temperature starts at 27°C and gradually increases to 40°C at the point when the battery regains 40% of its charge. It goes up a notch to 41°C and remains at this level for 1 hour and 40 minutes or until the moment the battery reaches 87% of its charge. After that, with the decreasing of charging speed, the battery temperature starts decreasing as well and at the end, it measures 34°C.
Browsing at 60 Hz (28 hours and 4 minutes)
During our intensive browsing test, the battery of our review unit lasted for 28 hours and 4 minutes. The discharging process is slow for the first hour and then gains a sterady speed until the battery drops to 5% of its charge. At that point, the process speeds up more. The battery temperature starts at 27°C, reaches 31°C in 1 hour and continues to increase very slowly, measuring 34°C in the end.
1080p Video (33 hours and 55 minutes)
1920x1080, 30 fps, H.264, 20Mbps bitrate
Our video test for battery life uses a 1080p video at 30 fps with a ~20Mbps rate. Our review unit's score from this test is 33 hours and 55 minutes, which is a very good result for this combination of battery capacity, display size and resolution, and a chipset. The discharging process is slow for the first 2 hours with the battery losing only 1% of its charge. Afterward, the process gains speed and maintains a steady pace until the battery drops to 5%. At that point, the discharging process develops very quickly. The battery temperature starts at 27°C, reaches 30°C in 2 hours, and maintains it for 20 hours, after which it increases to 32°C.
2160p Video at 60 Hz (9 hours and 4 minutes)
3840x2160, 30 fps, H.264, ~55 Mbps bitrate
The 4K video battery life test uses a 2160p video at 30 fps with a ~55 Mbps rate. In this test, the battery of our review unit lasted for 9 hours and 4 minutes. This low result is due to the fact that displaying 4K content places a real strain on the chipset and visibly, it struggles to decode it. Hence, the whole system increases its temperature, including the battery, resulting in an excessive loss in battery charge. The charging process follows the same pattern observed during the FHD video test. The battery temperature starts at 25°C, reaches 40°C in 40 minutes, and continues to increase. At the second hour of the process, the battery temperature measures 48°C and maintains this level for 5 hours, after which the battery temperature increases to 50°C and remains at this level until the end.
3D Graphics/Gaming 60 Hz (12 hours and 39 minutes)
YEBIS OpenGL ES 3.0 3D Tech Demo
For the 3D Graphics/Gaming test, the YEBIS OpenGL ES 3.0 3D Tech Demo is used. The result from this test is 12 hours and 39 minutes. The discharging process is again slow during the first hour and then gains speed maintaining it until the end. The battery temperature starts at 29°C and in 1 hour reaches 40°C. It continues increasing slowly maintaining a 42-43°C level until the end. Again, this process shows that a heavier strain on the chipset results in increasing the battery temperature and shortening the battery life.

Infrared thermography
The photos of the Pixel 8 Pro below are taken with a FLIR thermal camera. The first one shows the device's temperature during charging. The hottest zone is where the SIM card tray is on the left frame with a temperature of 32.4°C. The second hottest area is the USB connector with a temperature of 30.8°C. The same temperature has also been detected right below the center of the screen. The second photo depicts the device's temperature during our 3D battery life test. In this case, the hottest part is the center of the chin with a temperature of 32.2°C. It is closely followed by the area around the front camera with a temperature of 32.1°C.

Battery Settings

The Battery menu is a stock Android 13 one. The top shows the battery status followed by the Battery Usage menu which shows information about the time and amount of power used by apps and processes. The Battery Saver is next. It is a simple toggle that you can schedule or not and there's also an option to turn it off automatically when the battery reaches more than 90% of its charge. The Adaptive Battery is also a toggle, which we switch off for testing. Finally, there's a toggle for showing the battery percentage in the status bar.
