Design, build and controls

One picture is worth a thousand words. Here you may enjoy plenty of photos of the real Jelly Star in its two available colorways - blue and red. While most of the images are focused on depicting every aspect of the design, we have also included photos that showcase the size of the device compared to other well-known objects and how it looks in the hand. Small and rounded, the smartphones from the Unihertz Jelly series have been clearly inspired by the jelly beans candy from the very start. The Jelly Star takes this design a step further. It retains the compact and rounded form factor and adds a see-through rear shell plus interactive LED lights. The overall effect is reminiscent of the mesmerizing effect of jellyfish glowing in dark waters. The see-through plastic rear shell is a single piece that's molded to cover the back and the four sides. Hence, you get not only a transparent back but also a transparent "frame." Its glossy finish does convey the jelly bean effect successfully and what's more important - it does not seem to wear off or get scratched easily by normal everyday usage of the device. The good thing here is that you can see not only the mid-frame with imprinted effects on it but also some real hardware. There are three elements on the rear shell that complete its harmonious design and accentuate the glowing effect. The first is the camera island. It has a symmetrical oval shape and has a metal cover in the corresponding color (black or red). The element is vertically aligned in the center of the upper half of the body. The top is occupied by the main camera. The middle - by the dual-tone LED flash. The bottom - by the fingerprint rear. The camera island is accentuated by a U-shaped LED light that rounds off the top half's design. The bottom half features a second LED light element shaped as an incomplete circle with the Unihertz logo imprinted in its middle. This area covers the NFC antenna. The LED lights on the rear shell are managed by a dedicated app and there's also a dedicated menu from the Settings. Only white light is available as color and you can adjust its intensity and set the events for which you want the lights to switch on. These events are incoming calls, notifications, music visualizations, charging reminders, etc. You can also set a bedtime schedule or make the lights work at all times. The always-on feature for the lights means the battery will drain faster. The front of the device is occupied by the display with 2.5D curved edges and a glossy polycarbonate casing. While the corners of the devices a perfectly rounded, the display has sharp corners with a thick upper bezel and a thick chin. The side bezels are extremely thin. The elements in the upper bezel from left to right are as follows: LED notification light, 8MP selfie camera, earpiece, and proximity sensor. The chin houses a capacitive navigation bar while on-screen gestures are also enabled. Despite its compact form factor, the Jelly Star has all elements found on a regularly sized smartphone and more. There's a 3.5 mm headphone jack positioned on the top frame along with a microphone. The single speaker and a second microphone are placed on the bottom frame. The left frame houses the Volume Up-Down button which is colored in red for the red version and in blue for the blue version of the smartphone. The right frame has the most elements. From top to bottom, these are - the power button colored in red for the red version and in blue for the blue version; the customizable button colored in black for the red version and in red for the blue version; the hybrid, dual Nano-SIM card tray; the USB Type-C port. Because the USB-C port is placed on the side, the available USB cable has an angled plug for additional convenience. Finally, we've reached the point for dimensions and weight. We have measured and weighed the Jelly Star in our office and here are the numbers. The device is a bit less than 5 cm wide - 4.952 cm. It is also a bit less than 10 cm tall - 9.513 cm. Its thickness is almost 2 cm - 1.937 cm. The smartphone tips the scales at 121 grams.
