8849 Tank Mini 1 by Unihertz Review

Primary camera

8849 Tank Mini 1 by Unihertz has a simplified camera department for obvious reasons. Still, you get a pretty decent main camera. It uses a 100MP OmniVision OVA0B40 sensor with a 1/1.8" optical format and a 0.612 μm pixel size. The lens has an /f.175 aperture and a 5.1 mm focal length with a 26.6 mm focal length equivalent. By default, the main camera snaps 25MP photos (5792 x 4344 px). From the "More" options you have to choose "Super Resolution" to take 100MP photos. In terms of video, you can shoot up to 2K (2560 x 1440 px) videos at 30 fps.

Selfie camera

The front-facing camera of the 8849 Tank Mini 1 by Unihertz uses a 32MP Samsung S5KGD1 sensor with a 1/2.8" optical format and a 0.8 μm pixel size. It is paired with an f/2.0 lens with a 3.81 mm focal length and a 25.1 mm focal length equivalent. By default, it outputs 8MP photos and you have to select the "Super Resolution" option to snap 32MP photos. You can also shoot FHD videos at 30 fps with the front camera. Other smartphones and tablets that we have reviewed and use the S5KGD1 sensor for their selfie camera include the Oukitel RT7 Titan 5G, 8849 Tank 2 by Unihertz, Unihertz Luna, Unihertz Tank, Ulefone Power Armor 18T, Cubot X50, and the Xiaomi Mi A3.

Camera App

The Camera app has a straightforward layout. At the bottom of its home screen, you will see the big shutter button with the shortcut to the photos and videos to its left and the camera switch to its right. The reel with shooting modes is placed above these buttons. The default shooting mode is "Photo". When this mode is chosen, you can switch on/off HDR and the LED flash. The cog icon opens a list of photo settings including picture ratio, RAW mode toggle, gridlines, auto scene brightness, and others. In addition to the convenient gridlines, there's also a level feature (Straighten toggle) which comes in handy, too. The video recording settings contain an EIS toggle, a microphone toggle, a choice of video formats and video resolutions, gridlines, and others. The "Timelapse" mode shoots timelapse videos with a max resolution of 1080p. The "Pro" mode allows you to manually adjust the white balance, ISO, exposure compensation, shutter speed, and focus mode. The "More" mode opens an additional screen containing the QR Code scanner, Super Resolution, and Mono with an editor for the shooting modes. "Super Resolution" allows you to shoot in the original resolution of the sensor of the main camera. The shooting modes editor allows you to add/remove various shooting modes in the main list and/or in the "More" section. The interface for the front camera has almost the same shooting modes without the Pro and the QR code scanner ones. The Photos app is the default application to open and edit a photo. It arrives with Google Lens integrated and has all the standard features such as Enhance, Warm, Cool, Crop, Adjust (brightness, contrast, saturation, etc.), and so on.
