The first is about ruggedized smartphones intended for the great outdoors, while the second is intended for devices required to offer long autonomy. Ulefone Note 7P is a classic entry-level smartphone which manages to keep up with the current trends in design and features which are more appealing than usual due to the very attractive price tag of around EUR 90/USD 100. What's in the box

Ulefone Note 7P arrives in a rectangular black box. The lid is decorated with the outline of the front and rear shell of the handset adjoined by the brand and model names in a red triangle in the top left corner of the lid. The usual certification data and basic specifications are imprinted on the back of the box. The smartphone arrives accompanied by a number of accessories:

Design and build

Ulefone Note 7P has a 2.5D curved front glass and a four-side curved back shell the covers all four sides of the frame as well. The rear shell is made of plastic with a high gloss finish that’s prone to attracting fingerprints and smudges. The available colours include black, gold and a very nice shade of purple. We are reviewing a black unit. This model has average dimensions and weight for a smartphone with a 6.1-inch display and a 3500 mAh battery. It is 73.7 mm wide, 156.1 mm high and 9.7 mm thick. It is only the thickness that is slightly higher than average. The weight is 178.8 g. In terms of ergonomics, the handset is quite manageable. Most of the front of the device is taken up by the display. It occupies 80.45% of the total front surface that’s covered with a 2.5D curved glass. Centrally, above the display, there's a waterdrop notch for the front camera and above it -a small earpiece. To the left of the receiver, the light/proximity sensors are positioned. The side bezels, forehead and chin ones are quite thick but actually very typical for modern entry-level models. On the back of the smartphone, there's a squarish camera module with rounded corners. It includes the three rear cameras and the LED flash. The module is positioned centrally on the top and below it, there's an oval capacitive fingerprint sensor. It's slightly indented and is comfortable to reach with the index finger of each hand. At the bottom, there are the Ulefone logo and a rear-mounted speaker in the bottom-left corner. In order not to be muffled when the device lies on its back, the speaker has two protruding dots on its sides that lift the area with a millimetre. The plastic rear shell has to be removed in order to access the three slots for SIM cards and microSD card. When you remove the back panel, the slot on your left will be the one for the Nano-SIM card and the two slots on your right will be for the Micro-SIM and microSD card - they are placed one above the other. The battery remains non-removable. Still, in need of repairs, it will be much easier to access compared to the devices that are sealed off. The top frame of the handset is where the 3.5 mm jack resides. The bottom one houses a Micro-USB 2.0 port with OTG support and a microphone hole next to it. The left frame is bare and the right one houses the two volume rockers and the power button.

Specifications overview

Ulefone Note 7P is adorned with a 6.1-inch IPS display with a resolution of 600 x 1280 pixels and 19.2:9 aspect ratio. Power is supplied by a 3500 mAh Li-Ion battery. According to the manufacturer, it should ensure up to 20h talk time, 365h standby time, 27h music playback, and 7h video playback. It arrives with a 5V/1A charger.

The smartphone is based on a MediaTek Helio A22 (MT6761VWB) - a chipset created especially for modern budget smartphones with up to 700 x 1600 resolution displays with up to 20:9 ratio, twin camera setups with lightweight AI, dual 4G SIM support and rich connectivity options. The 12nm system-on-chip houses a 2GHz CPU with four Cortex-A53 cores and a PowerVR GE8300 GPU. In the Ulefone Note 7P it is paired with 3GB of single-channel LPDDR3 RAM clocked at 667MHz. There are 32GB of storage, expandable with up to 128GB via a dedicated card slot.

The model supports LTE Cat. 4 speeds with VoLTE for both SIM cards. They work with the following network bands: 2G GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), 3G W-CDMA (850, 900, 2100 MHz), 4G FDD-LTE (800, 850, 900, 1800, 2100, 2600 MHz). Ulefone Note 7P supports GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS for positioning, Bluetooth 5, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct and Cast display.

The camera department of the smartphone features three rear shooters and a single front one. The main rear camera packs an 8MP sensor paired to an f/1.8 lens. It shoots photos with a resolution of 4000 x 2000 pixels if you choose the 18:9 aspect ratio and takes 3264 x 2448 photos when you shoot in 4:3 aspect ratio. In UHD mode it makes a photo with a resolution of 6528 x 4896. The rear camera shoots FHD videos at 16 fps. The other two cameras are auxiliary ones, each with a 2MP sensor. The whole setup uses the ArcSoft algorithm and AI effect s. It is also aided by a dual-LED flash. The front-facing camera has a 2MP sensor and an f/2.0 lens. It snaps images with a resolution of 1920 x 1088 pixels and shoots FHD videos at 17 fps. It also supports face unlock.

Software and performance

Ulefone Note 7P runs on almost stock Android 9 Pie with its usual bangs and whistles. It supports split-screen mode, desktop shortcuts however, the Task Manager tiles the apps vertically, not horizontally. There's no app bloatware - you get only the essential apps out-of-the-box, including the standard Google ones, Phone, Contacts, Messenger, Camera, Clock, Sound Recorder, Calculator, FM Radio, Notes, File Manager and the ETWS emergency settings. The System Settings are quite standard and begin with the connectivity options - mobile network settings, SIM cards, wireless connections, hotspot, Bluetooth, etc. They continue with the display, sound, navigation bar, apps, notifications, security, intelligent assistance and system settings. The last group of settings manages the accounts and contains the DuraSpeed option which prioritizes foreground apps and limits background ones. The navigation bar is in its simple default form but you can opt for a standard on-screen one or hide it completely and use gestures instead. The face ID and fingerprint unlock work reliably and fast. The display settings offer a useful Night Light feature for eye protection when spending long hours with the device when it's dark. We ran a couple of tests on the Ulefone Note 7P just to get an idea of how the Helio A22 chipset performs on this device. Our unit got 66267 points in AnTuTu 7 which clearly places it above units with older MediaTek chipsets such as MT6750T, MT6739 but lower than the MediaTek P series. This is further confirmed by the 3DMark Sling Shot and Sling Shot Extrem OpenGL results which are 475 and 279 points. In every usage this translates as a reliable device for browsing, watching videos and light games.
