Smartphone shipments in Europe fall by 6.3% in Q1 of 2018, Xiaomi is the big winnerThe first quarter of 2018 has marked the biggest drop in smartphone shipments in Europe according to the latest research by Canalys. The drop measures 6.3% year on year and a closer look at the results show that in Western Europe the drop is 13.9%, while Central and Eastern Europe show a rise by 12.3% which is due mainly to the active Russian market. "This is a new era for smartphones in Europe," said Ben Stanton, Analyst at Canalys. "The few remaining growth markets are not enough to offset the saturated ones. We are moving from a growth era to a cyclical era. This presents a brand-new challenge to the incumbents, and we expect several smaller brands to leave the market in the coming years." With this significant decline as a backdrop, the three top smartphone vendors experience a drop in smartphone shipments. Samsung keeps its first place with a 33.1% market share and 15.2 million units shipped, which is a 15.4% decline. Apple is second with a 22.2% market share and 10.2 million units shipped, which is a decline by 5.1%. Huawei is third with 16.1% market share, 7.4 million units shipped and growth by 38.6%. As a new player in the European smartphone market, Xiaomi surges to the fourth place with a growth by almost 1000%. It has shipped 2.4 million units and has a 5.3% market share. Nokia by HMD Global is another small player that has found a place in the top five with a 3.5% market share and 1.6 million units shipped. The Canalys report also outlines the major trends in smartphones in Europe - dual and triple camera design remains to be a hot trend and in Europe, the dual camera demand grew over 150% on the previous year. The demand for displays larger than 5.5 inches has grown by 50% due to the new 18:9 full-screen design. Smartphones with dual-SIM capabilities are another growing specification trend in Europe.
