Qualcomm announces the Snapdragon X55 - its second generation 5G modem chipIn a series of announcements from today, Qualcomm presented its second-generation modem chip that will be employed by future 5G smartphones dubbed Snapdragon X50. The first generation 5G chip - Snapdragon X50 was announced back in 2016 and was produced in small batches for select smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi. The second generation will be for mass production as "over 20 OEMs and more than 20 operators have committed to launching 5G products and services based on our Snapdragon platform". Moreover, it can be used not only in smartphones but also in hotspots, Wi-Fi routers, Always Connected PCs*, laptops, tablets, XR devices and connected cars.

The Snapdragon X55 modem supports 5G NR TDD and FDD, as well as mmWave and sub-6 GHz spectrum, 5G non-standalone (NSA), standalone (SA) modes, and 5G/4G spectrum sharing. It provides peak speeds of 7 Gbps for download and 3 Gbps for upload. The modem introduces Qualcomm Envelope Tracking and Qualcomm Adaptive Antenna Tuning technologies for 5G NR for superior battery life, network coverage and data speeds. Cutting-edge LTE features are also supported, including 24 spatial streams, 4x4 MIMO, and 1024-QAM. It includes 2.5 Gbps LTE peak speeds enabled by Category 22 LTE. Snapdragon X55 is currently sampling to customers and expected to be in commercial devices by late 2019. "Qualcomm Technologies is spearheading the first wave of 5G launches with our first generation 5G mobile platform. With significant evolution in capabilities and performance, our second generation commercial 5G modem is a true testament to the maturity and leadership of our 5G technology. We expect our 5G platform to accelerate 5G commercial momentum and power virtually all 5G launches in 2019 while significantly expanding the global 5G rollout footprint," said Cristiano Amon, president, Qualcomm Incorporated.

Tomorrow we expect to see the new Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ smartphones from Samsung, which most probably be powered by Qualcomm's 5G solutions as in December last year both companies announced they will cooperate on releasing a 5G smartphone this year. At the same time, Samsung has its own 5G modem named Exynos 5100, which will most probably be found on the Exynos-powered smartphones from Samsung, i.e. all devices sold outside the US. A third player has already entered the 5G race - Huawei, which has already presented its 5G chip, and MediaTek is there as well with its own product. Intel is yet about to announce its 5G solution in the second half of 2019.
