UMIDIGI S3 Pro Review
You can buy an UMIDIGI S3 Pro from various stores such as the official UMIDIGI Store on AliExpress or UMIDIGI's own online shop.

OS, UI and software

UMIDIGI S3 Pro arrives with stock Android 9 Pie out of the box. The exact firmware version on our review unit is UMIDIGI_S3_Pro.E_V1.0_20190329_20190404-1829. UPDATE: On May 1st, the device received an OTA update UMIDIGI_S3_Pro.E_V1.0_20190419_20190430-2205. There are some design changes in the Battery and Camera apps, the latter has also become noticeably faster. In terms of UI, it is already widely familiar. The Lock Screen offers the standard Voice Search and Camera shortcuts along with a swipe up as a default way of unlocking the screen. The Home Screen contains a docked row of apps with a row of select applications on top. A swipe up opens the list of apps which appear in alphabetic order below a search bar. Whenever you install new apps, they will appear on screens successive to the Home one and in the full list mentioned above. A swipe to the right from the Home screen opens the Google Now screen. The Widgets menu is almost non-existent. It only contains a choice of widgets and a choice of wallpapers. The Task Manager lists the apps horizontally, contains a Clear All button and supports split-screen. The Notification cards appear like their floating, which is nice in terms of design but a bit annoying if you tend to get lots of notifications. Each one appears in its collapsed variant and it takes seconds to expand in full as it is only after that that you can dismiss it. The Quick Settings now have larger icons and more toggles per page. The status bar information, including the battery status, time, date and connections are removed. Only the carrier name remains in the bottom left corner, while in the right corner you get the toggles editor and shortcut to the System Settings.
UMIDIGI S3 Pro arrives with a basic set of pre-installed applications. The standard Google apps include Calendar, Chrome, Drive, Duo, Files, Gmail, Google, Keep Notes, Maps, Photos, Play Music, Play Store, YouTube. The default Android apps include Calculator, Clock, Contacts, Downloads, Flashlight, FM Radio, Messenger, Music, Phone, NoteBook, Sound Recorder. All of them are in their stock Android appearance and functionality. Only the Camera app is customized by UMIDIGI.
The Settings menu reflects all the changes we've noticed when we made the UMIDIGI F1 review, including the cards-style of the settings suggestions, larger and colourful icons designating each settings menu. The list begins with the Network & Internet menu which manages your Wi-Fi connections, mobile networks, data usage, hotspot and tethering, SIM cards, mobile plans, VPN, airplane mode and Private DNS connection options. The Wi-Fi preferences contain an additional toggle for automatic Wi-Fi turning on when near high-quality saved networks. The Connected Devices menu is next managing your NFC, Cast display, Bluetooth, printing, received files list and Chromebooks connections. As usual, the settings continue with the Apps & notifications menu. The Notifications options have a new feature added - do not disturb, and one feature is removed - app-specific notifications.

The fourth menu is the Smart Assistant one. It begins with the Network Manager which lets you choose which apps should use mobile and/or Wi-Fi networks. From the Buttons menu, you can switch between the onscreen navigation bar and navigation gestures, each of which can be customized. The Appblocker is similar to DuraSpeed - they both block background apps in favour of foreground ones. It is followed by three Flip to mute toggles for calls, alarms and music, respectively. ScreenCapture is a feature which allows you to record your interaction with the screen. It works only if the Wi-Fi is stopped. Finally, there's the QR code scanner option called Sweep.
The Battery menu is fifth and will be discussed in the Battery section of this review. It is followed by the Display group of settings and contains a brightness level slider, an adaptive brightness toggle, Night Light mode, screen saver, wallpapers, MediaTek's MiraVision settings for adjusting the saturation, contrast, brightness, sharpness, colour temperature and other features of the screen. Calibration of the proximity and g-sensor is included in the Display group of settings as well together with "Lift to wake toggle. The following menu is about managing the sound in all of its aspects - call, media, rings, and alarms volumes. In the additional sound options, an emergency tone is added as well. The Storage menu remains unchanged compared to Android 8.1 Oreo.
The Security & Location menu begins with the usual Google Play Protect, Find My Device, and Security update features introduced on Android 8.0. From here you can also set up a screen lock, your lock screen, smart lock, privacy settings, etc. This menu lets you save a face ID as well as a fingerprint ID. In addition to using it for unlocking, the fingerprint sensor can be used as an alternative way of navigation or shortcuts to features and apps - depends on how you set it to respond to a long touch, single or double tap. The Accounts menu is totally simplified. The Accessibility menu follows with all standard Android features. The Google services and preferences menu comes next followed by the DuraSpeed one. The last menu is the System one. As usual, from here, you can manage the Languages & Input settings, Gestures, Date & Time, Backup, Reset, and About phone. The only interesting things here are the additional option in the Gestures sub-menu dubbed "Prevent ringing" which adjoins the "Jump to camera" one. A new option here is the Multiple Users sub-menu, which is actually the User menu allowing you to manage who, whether and how to use your smartphone by settings user profiles. From here, you can also check out for OTA updates before opening the About phone menu which gives general data about the device.
