Design, build and controls

With the Galaxy S9 Samsung has been quite conservative as long as it concerns the design. With the S8 it has found a winning formula and logically, there's no point in changing that. When you look at an S9 and an S8 unit put together, you won't tell they are different smartphones. The body combines 3D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back with a solid and beautifully polished metal frame in between them. The curved vertical edges gently flow into the thin 7000-series aluminium alloy frame, which is stylishly glossy and seamlessly merges with the back of the smartphone, which has identical curved vertical edges. The body itself is impressively comfortable to operate with one hand. The model is available in lilac, grey, blue, and black colours. We are reviewing a black unit. The front of all colour variants is black and this is a practical decision. On one hand, it hides most of the hardware holes placed above the display as a lighter colour will make them pop-out and this won't be very eye-pleasing. On the second, when the smartphones are turned off, or when the Always on Display is activated, the front looks like being an all-display one. The Galaxy S9 is only a tad wider than the S8 - 68.7 mm against 68.1 mm. At the same time, it is shorter, measuring 147.77 mm in height, while the S8 is 148.9 high. Despite that, both devices house a 3000 mAh battery the S9 is 8.5 mm thin, while the S8 is thinner with a waistline of 8 mm. The S9 is also heavier, weighing 163 grammes, while the S8 weighs 155 g. The S9 and S8 still remain the narrowest and shortest smartphones among all models with a 5.7-5.9-inch display. As long as it concerns depth and weight, these are average for smartphones with a 5.7-5.9-inch display and a 3000 mAh battery. The body is IP68 certified, meaning it is dust-tight and waterproof (able to survive submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes). Usually, the first digit of the ingress protection (IP) code depicts the level of protection against solid particles and is in the range from 0 to 6, six being the highest. The second digit shows the level of protection against liquids. Its range is from 0 (the lowest) to 9K (the highest). IP68 is one of the highest levels of protection for smartphones. Only time will tell whether the glossy finish of the aluminium frame is wear-resistant. The front of the Galaxy S9 is adorned by a Dual Edge Display, which takes 84.41% of the total front surface of the device. The S8 has an 84.47% screen-to-body-ratio. The side bezels look a bit thicker than those on the Galaxy S8 and the forehead and chin seem to be almost unchanged in size. Above the display on the front, there is a total of seven holes. Here they are from left to right: LED notification light, an illuminator for the iris scanner, proximity and ambient light sensor, receiver, front camera, and the 5-megapixel iris scanner itself. The latter operates with infrared light, therefore, it needs the illuminator to capture the retina pattern. The Samsung logo is missing from the front. The receiver serves as a stereo speaker. The chin is bare as Samsung has opted for on-screen navigation bar only. By default, the buttons appear in the following order - Menu, Home, Back, but you can switch the places of the Menu and Back ones from the Settings. The Home button is pressure-sensitive, i.e. you have to press it harder and it will lead you to the home screen providing haptic feedback. A longer touch on it activates the Google Assistant. A tap on the Menu button opens up the Task Manager. There's also a small dot on the far left, which allows you to dock the navigation bar if you prefer to have it always on top instead of hiding it. It is the back of the device that demonstrates the most significant difference between the Galaxy S9 and S8. The camera module and fingerprint sensor of the S9 are placed centrally along the vertical one above the other. On the S8, they are placed next to each other and this arrangement did not receive applause from the mass audience at all. Evidently, Samsung has listened to the feedback from its customers and has opted for a more classic positioning of those elements. The LED flashlight and the heart rate sensor below it are placed to the right of the camera-fingerprint sensor module. The Samsung logo is imprinted in the centre of the device's back. After the Galaxy S8, the Galaxy S9 is the second smartphone in the world to use a second ambient light sensor, which is placed on the back for a more accurate measurement of the ambient light. When the display's brightness has to be adjusted automatically, the device takes into consideration the values from both the front and rear light sensors. The top frame houses the single/dual-SIM tray and the secondary microphone. The bottom one is where the USB Type-C 3.1 port, the 3.5 mm jack, the stereo speaker, and the first microphone are located. The speaker hole is a single elongated one, while the S8 uses a more standard speaker grille. The left frame is where the volume button and the dedicated Bixby button are placed. The Bixby button cannot be customised unless you use third-party software for this purpose. The right frame is where the power button resides. The buttons are very delicate in terms of appearance, convenient to work with and solidly made.
