LeEco X920 (DVT2) Review

Battery

The Battery management tools can be accessed from the Power Management section of the Super manager app and from the Battery menu in the Settings. Besides toggling on/off the battery percentage, you can also monitor the status of the accumulator and its usage. There are also two other toggles that activate/deactivate an Ultra-long standby during sleep function and a Lockscreen clean up one. There's an App protection list, which contains applications that should be protected from clearing. The Align Wakeup function effectively reduces the times of phone wakeups as to save power. The Schedule power on/off feature is included in the Power Management section and is present as a separate menu in the Settings. Of course, there's a battery saver under the name of Battery Assistant.
The previous models from the 6.33-inch phablet series of LeTV/LeEco are provided with 3400 mAh batteries. However, the Android system on X920 reports that the battery has a capacity of 3700 mAh. As the device does not arrive in original branded packaging, there's no an original charger with a Type-C cable for it. Therefore we have made three battery charging tests with three different types of chargers. All battery tests below are developed by us and performed with the screen of the device being calibrated to 200 cd/m2. Battery saving features are disabled. With the simplest possible Anker charger, the battery of our review units charges in 2 hours and 32 minutes. The process is not linear. It starts off slowly and goes like that for quite some time. For example, 50% of the capacity are reached in 1 hour and 25 minutes. 24 minutes later it reaches 70% and at that point, the charging speed increases a bit. The last 30% of the capacity are filled in 43 minutes. The battery temperature remains impressively low during the whole process and does not exceed 30°C. It starts off at 26°C gradually reaches 28.5°C at 60% of the charge and then gradually decreases to 26°C at the end of the process. The second test has been performed with the Xiaomi Mi 6 charger that supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. With it, the X920 battery charges completely in 1 hour and 23 minutes. The process goes in a different way, too. In only 36 minutes the battery reaches 50% of its charge. The first 25% are charged with a slightly slower speed than the other 25% to 50%. The rate is maintained the same till 70% of the charge is reached after 12 additional minutes. At that point, the charging speed slows down and the next 20% to 90% need 18 minutes. After that, charging becomes even slowlier and the last 10% to full capacity need 17 minutes to charge. Logically, with a fast charger as the Mi 6 one, the battery temperature is higher. It starts off at 35°C and after the first 10 minutes rise to 39-40°C. This level is maintained till the battery reaches 70% of its charge at the 48th minute of the process. At that point, the temperature starts to decrease till it reaches 28°C at the very end. The third battery charging test has been performed with the Galaxy S8 (Exynos-based) charger. The result is almost in between the results from the Anker and Mi 6 adapters - 2 hours and 9 minutes. With this charger, the process goes at a steady pace from the beginning till the battery reaches 90% of its capacity, after which it slows down and the last 10% need 21 minutes to charge. 50% of the capacity are reached in 1 hour. The battery temperature is quite steady. It starts at 29°C and gradually rises to 30-31°C and then decreases to 28.5°C at the end. Our intensive browsing test shows that the battery of X920 lasts for 4 hours and 56 minutes. The process is relatively steady and discharging goes faster only after the battery reaches 10% of its charge. The battery temperature does not fluctuate a lot, too. It starts from 36°C and gradually rises to 38.7°C. After the battery reaches 35% of its charge the temperature increases to 40°C, which is maintained with slight fluctuations till the end. For the battery life test during video playing, we use a 1080p video at 30 fps with a ~20Mbps rate. The battery of X920 depletes completely in 6 hours and 40 minutes. The process starts at one speed and after the first 10% are consumed, it increases and maintains this pace till the battery reaches 10% of its charge. At that point, discharging becomes even faster and the last 10% are consumed in 17 minutes. This test has put less strain on the device compared to the browsing one and the battery temperature remains in the range of 31°C from the start to 37°C at the end. For the 4K video test, we use a 2160 video at 30 fps with a ~55Mbps rate. In this one, the battery discharges from 100% to 0% in 5 hours and 45 minutes. The same pattern as with the 1080p video is observed, but the trends are even more clearly outlined. For the first 31 minutes, the process is very slow and consumes only 4% of the capacity to 96%. Afterwards, it speeds up and maintains a relatively steady pace till 10% of the capacity are left. At that point, discharging speeds up even further and the last 10% are consumed in 16 minutes. The temperature graph follows logically the discharging one. It starts from 28°C and while the process is still slow, it rises to 36.5°C. After that, it continues rising but very slowly till it reaches 38°C at the end. The last battery life test is the 3D Graphics/Gaming one, for which we use the Epic Citadel's tech demo in its Guided Tour mode. The battery endured for 4 hours and 18 minutes. For the first hour and a half, during which, the battery reaches 70% of its capacity the discharging speed is maintained one and the same, but afterwards, it slightly increases and the next 30% are depleted in 1 hour and 20 minutes. This pace is maintained till the battery reaches 10%, after which it speeds up again to consume the last capacity percentages in 12 minutes. The 3D Graphics/Gaming test puts the highest strain on the battery, compared to the other ones, and the temperature reacts accordingly. It starts from 33.7°C and after half an hour reaches 40°C. Then, it gradually rises to 41°C and 42°C, which is maintained until the end.

Final thoughts

The LeEco X920 sample we have received corresponds to the description of what a design verification test unit should be. There are some final touches that need to be made and regard mainly the software part, and probably the model we'll have to pass one or two more testing phases before it gets its final version. Despite being a DVT unit, the device left us with positive impressions. We do hope that it actually sees the light of day as an official LeEco product because it looks quite promising and can easily turn into a worthy competitor in the phablets niche on the smartphone market.
